I know the fires are still raging and I am as shocked and saddened as the next person. I imagine how I might feel coming home to a pile of ashes and a life's work and accumulation gone.

.

But I am concerned that events like this post-fallout always degenerate in to a "search for answers" where mud is flung all over the place, and political "point-scoring" and accusations are made

.

Undoubtedly this is going to occur. It always does. Some may have already begun.

.

I hope that despite that, we never lose sight of the real human tragedy and loss of life in this whole episode, which is still ongoing as I type.

I hope it ends soon. Very soon.

The irony of suppling 80,000 tonnes of bombs to make 2 million people homeless in Gaza and then getting burnt out yourself by a climate change disaster

I imagine those who are suffering in LA are not those who made the decisions about supplying the bombs

Not ironic is it. It would be irinic if those bombs were subsequently used to bomb the US but it's not ironic to have two totally different circumstances happen to two separate groups,

Indeed. Conflating the situation in Gaza (because of US-supplied munitions) with the fires in LA as irony is a bit like saying it's ironic the Titanic sank when it hit an iceberg whilst guests on board where having ice in their drinks.

.

There is no connection between the two things.

.

However there is a slightly darker manipulation here because it invites the reader to somehow feel less sympathetic towards the situation in LA. To what ends I do not know, and I will leave others to make up their own minds.

I saw a woman on the TV news who said she now realised what it was like for those who have been bombed out of their homes.

America has never really suffered whole districts being flattened before. Sadly the damage is occuring in left leaning California and not Florida or Texas.

One of the reasons it did happen in California is because IT IS left leaning.

Conservationists objecting to forest management, the state governor refusing to divert water to save some obscure fish, state and city budgets being spent on woke agenda's instead of infrastructure and then having to cut the fire departments budget. Diversity equity and inclusion or DEI trumping (pun intended) doing the job they are paid for. Just swap the last two letters around and see what you get.

Nothing can stop the power of nature but these flames have, literally, been fanned by mismanagement on a biblical scale.

I'm sure Texas and Florida will get natural disasters, they both get Hurricanes aplenty but they manage it.

California has become a byword for mismanagement.

Actually, it's the perfect time for politics.

That's what the NRA says when someone takes a legal assault rifle and kills a bunch of kids.

That's exactly when those opposed to unrestricted gun ownership need to make their point and politicians need to act.

People are homeless in Gaza because 80% voted for Hamas and Hamas invaded Israel on 7th Oct 2023 and murdered and butchered 1200 people. Then they took hostages and tortured and murdered them.

What utter tripe……. The context of the LA fires does not sit in some fairytale political fantasy plot but in a reality of wealthy people building homes in natural habitats (ie away from the city) which have historically been susceptible to fire (before humans ignited by lightning) and in the current situation, worsened exponentially by 100mph winds on an ongoing basis. There is absolutely nothing human technology or resources could justifiably done to prevent this once the fires had ignited.

Right leaning places certainly don’t deal with Natural Disasters any better than left leaning ones .. you are arguing that FEMA doesn’t deal with emergency relief in general well, but that then is a question of how quick extra budget comes from government….

Only two weeks to Trumps inauguration.

Then the USA will be removed from the Paris climate accord for the second time. Denial from

some that these fires are attributed to climate change, Trump recommended cutting the trees down as the method of prevention, why did the lawmakers not listen.

"

No Fabio I'm not arguing that at all.

FEMA wouldn't be involved until after, or at least during, a disaster.

What went, and is still going, horribly wrong in California was sowing the seeds of disaster in the first place.

Either from lack of funding (god knows why when Californians pay some of the highest taxes in the US) or lobbying from conservationist groups (or both) scrubland and forestry management was pretty much abandoned.

When, under pressure from conservationists, the left wing state governor refuses to sign off a water re-distribution plan that would have brought much needed water to an area in desperate need of it. All to protect a fish.

When the left wing mayor of the city cuts funding to a fire department in an area prone to fires then clears off to Africa after being warned that her city was at high risk. Sure, the city was short of money. I wonder why?

Those were the seeds of the tinderbox and just a few examples of where left wing ideology crashes headlong into the real world. And real people pay the (sometimes ultimate) price.

As soon as you mentioned the fish fallacy I had to laugh because it’s nowhere near as simple as that and the actual resovirs in this case as full (the hydrants basically working at low pressure is a different issue)

There is actually a much bigger water fight between California, Nevada and Arizona over resources that needs sorting….

It’s a bit like saying when Texas had “the big freeze “ or anytime the electricity conks outa few years ago, one of the things that kept on being asked again and again is “why are Texas not on the National grid “

Texas governor refused/refuses to do anything, and Texas senator ted Cruz solution was to cart his family to cancun and he only came back when people started freezing to death

The fish "fallacy" as you call it is being widely reported and in a such litigious society I would have expected the governor to have had his lawyers on speed dial if the reports were false.

Don't forget to add that California instituted price controls on insurance. That caused many insurance companies to pull out of the market, leaving large numbers of Californians with no home insurance, and now facing financial ruin after the loss of their homes.

The irony of Republican mouthpieces making political capital from a natural disaster when it is Blue states that subsidise Red states. They are always the poorest educated, have the worst health care and in some cases are almost third world in infrastructure.

But there were lots of people that could afford it, but were unable to get it, because the companies weren't allowed to charge a sensible price for it.

That's interesting. No matter how many times politicians burn their own hands with price controls, they keep trying it for some reason.

Right just takes steps to manage or mitigate.

Good forest management policies in the case of this subject could have prevented it or mitigated the extent of it.

Left leaning new some failed on both prevention and putting out fires.
