"This is utterly ridiculous. The argument that investment is required is lost on the shareholders and their profits. The ombudsman is frankly of no use at all "
Agree. Water/Utilities should never have been privatised. |

Ok so I work for one of the big 6 water companies so I have more of an insight of how things work. We as are some huge companies are actually owned by a huge worldwide company (hongkong/China) all water companies have money set aside for the fines etc it's nothing to them. Are CEO got a million pound bonus on top of the million pound salary. The owners took 20 million out of the company at the end of the financial year. |

"The owners took 20 million out of the company at the end of the financial year. "
Hopefully a major proportion of that went to shareholders for dividends ? Because I know one who will happily pull his investment out of utilities if they don't deliver a decent return. Plenty of other companies out there to invest in, and the utility can in his own words, swivel. |

I think in hindsight no water should not have been privatised. But would it be in a worse state is government was running it hard to say but something has to be done to make improvements if it a jump in payment by 10% a year and you get a better service grate. But how will this improvement be messed. |

I am 95% water, so I need it to be alive.
I cannot drink shit laced water.
I have already told my water company that they will only receive 20 pounds a month from me and no more until I see proof of water improvements and I do not care for excuses, I know what they have been doing lacing their pockets and not cleaning water. |

Indeed, and thankfully our water quality is the top 10 countries in the world (a fact seldom mentioned by the media). The debate is now about sewage treatment and disposal - a crisis brought about largely by climate change and permanently altered water hydraulics. |

You forget lack of investment due to shareholder dividends being more important than cleaning the water, as our water is top 10 is that due to all the sewage being put into our rivers and seas making bathing in rivers dangerous due to the high levels of germs found in theses sites.
Or the high number of leaks.

The payouts in dividends to shareholders of parent companies between 1991 and 2019 amount to £57bn – nearly half the sum they spent on maintaining and improving the country’s pipes and treatment plants in that period.

Investment and dividends are BOTH important components in operating a private company. Why would anybody invest their money in a company that gave no return? But yes, the dividends need to be linked to performance and efficiency. Ditto salaries and bonuses. OFWAT either doesn't have enough powers or they're not doing their job!! |

another failed thatcherite experiment .... take a national asset and sell it to the people who already own it .... then when it inevitably fails, just make everybody pay again ad infinitum .... it's fucking stupid |

Ofwat are lining their pockets with cash from the water companies they are suppose to regulate. |

It's disgusting how they've been allowed to operate, with the regulator left to be toothless and environmental staff cut. So very wrong when they've had so much money extracted that bill payers are expected to foot this investment bill |

it reflects decades of tory voters pulling the wool over everyones eyes with old line about 'making returns for private pension funds' |

It beats me why ofcom penalise the postal system, another £10.5 million there a few weeks ago, while ofwat are almost complicit in the water companies mismanagement and giving them the green light to carry on, and in my view the board of ofwat need to be replaced pronto. |

Hold on, its a good job you don't write the history books
Wilson and Labour lost control of water infrastructure and investment in the 1970s. When Thatcher privatised in 1989, the public had already lost patience with the service!
Thatcher said we couldn't afford to afford to fix decades of neglect and privatised.
Blair supported the idea when he came into power after the tories and he introduced and setup the weak and meaningless regulation we have today.
State owned water was in the same place as state owned telecoms, on its knees thanks to labours terrible management of the economy in the 1970's and the unions, who labour pandered to but couldn't keep with their demands.... now that sounds familiar

it's you who keeps attempting to re-write history with that garbage.
the thatcher government took well performing assets and sold them resulting in the mess that the following generations have been left to clear up. |

So what would be a fare reward to the Share holders if its not close to 6% of investment then people will invest elsewhere.
But in a simplicit way would people be happy with a 5th payed to share, if 2/5th was to cover running cost. And 2/5th investment.
Is it time these company's where made to become less reliant on privet investment. And slowly brought back shears. |

Well performing assets?
In which fantasy world was that?
As someone who lived and worked in the 70's I remember those "well performing assets" very well.
When telephones were managed by the GPO and it could take anything from 3 to 6 months to get a line installed.
Water boards that pushed raw (and I mean REALLY raw) sewage into the sea. They didn't even filter it. "Sea Mice" (think about it) and other things with names similar to the last Plantagenet King were common finds when I used to dig bait on Blackpool beach back then.
Railways? What a laugh. British Rail used to advertise "we're getting there" but they never did.
Public owned utilities were a total shit show (some literally) in those days.
While the great lady didn't get everything right, on privatisation she was spot on at the time.
To be fair some of the company's that currently own them haven't exactly covered themselves in glory, sadly the spivs have taken over. But no-one could have foreseen that 40 years ago and for a while it worked very well. Especially when it came to service.

But the past is now just that the past.
Surly it's more about how we as a country move forward or this will just go round in circles. NO |

But they weren't 'well performing assets'. They were all basket cases without exception. In the case of Water Companies, the quality of drinking water was going downhill fast (largely thanks to increased acidity of rainfall which discoloured water). The government couldn't afford the investment in water infrastructure, so privatised the companies. The investment was made, and water improved immeasurably. The challenge now is sewage and climate change. They are the same thing in practice, but nobody wants to face up to it. Easier to pass around the 'blame' parcel. |

th reality was that the thatcher government spent tons of cash getting the assets up to peak performance prior to sale and rather than reap the rewards they sold those assets to the very people who already owned them .... remember the famous hot mike incident where she was laughing when she said, "we've taken the family silver and sold it back to the family" .... the money they took was squandered, gambled, given away and stashed in offshore accounts. now the chickens have kicked in the door and are squatting the roost. |

"I wonder if people still drink water from the tap?
I haven't since the 70's unless it is a hot drink."
Why not? UK tap water ranks in the top 10 for quality in the world. Why litter the planet with more plastic? |
