"so a buffer zone for the already gargantuan buffer zone that they already had .... gotcha "
I deleted my post for a reason, it looks like bad timing.
however the point is the land was part of the ceasefire, and now they are reinforcing that area after the collapse of the Syrian government.
I can't see the issue after Oct 7th attacks, it would be catastrophic act of negligence to not defend after that, I would say.
I would also hope stability can come to Syria and surrounding region, allowing the whole area to be handed back.

Do disagree that Israel defending its borders is the right thing to do, or do agree they should and put extra security in place?

do you think that tomorrow they should create a huge new buffer zone to defend todays newly created buffer zone in order to defend the already enormous empty buffer zone that has successfully defended that border for almost 60 years? |

That’s the argument they are using, it lasted for a long time, now there is uncertainty hence the stretch.
I would hope that once calm and normality has been established the land can be handed back, there would be no reason at all for them to annex it. However if hostility occurs, it would be seen as a smart move.

I get the irony. but in some places the respective boundaries of the buffer zone were only a few hundred metres apart. Separated families would meet and wave to each other across it. Israel is not gonna allow this new lot to approach that close with their newly acquired weapons... and it's only been "successfully defended" (by whom, the UN? Don't make me laugh) because until now both sides have respected these boundaries. Sent missiles, drones and fighters over them, of course. |

it appears that Benny disagrees with you after his 'part of Israel for eternity' speech this evening.
He appears his speech has pissed off everyone in the neighbourhood, but then it's possible that's all part of his plan. |

The Golan heights is where the Jordan River gets it's water from. On many previous occasions Syria threatened to dam off the Jordan and divert it, thus starving Israel of water. I do not see Israel giving them back without a fight. |
