The French Parliament is in chaos, the unelected Government of Michelle Barmier set to collapse under pressure from the far left and far right. Tout allors!

With the Germany government also in meltdown we can surely be glad we're not stuck in a political union with these two, and all we have to worry about is whether we can eat Ready Brek or not ! 🇬🇧

I got all excited for a moment, but then I realised you were talking about the French government.

That's like when Europeans, for the past few years, said "Thank goodness we don't have the same problems as those poor British bastards..."

I am very pro Europe and follow European affairs closely. It is sad to see great countries like France and Germany in disarray but it also shows how little most Remoaners actually know about our friends and neighbours.

Almost all of Europe now has the same huge issues around economic decline, mass immigration and ageing populations. It is pretty damning that the EU is unable to tackle any of these, and in fact generally makes them worse.

We're in the twilight of liberal Western democracies.

In respect of actually following the current affairs of other countries rather than having a bizarre idealised world view of Europe = Good, UK = Bad.

First thing is, France doesn't collapse 'cos the budget isn't passed. I've worked with it myself, salaries are paid, there's still a Police Force (despite GBN's glee and Nige's doom-mongering), hospitals etc., the restriction is having to work with what's termed "provisional twelfths", you mustn't spend in a month more than 1/12 of last year's expenditure. Gives more than enough time for a new budget to be prepared and voted (and a new Prime Minister found!), quarterly rent payments and such are difficult, but somebody "creative" always finds a way. The pity is that some quite nice babies - e.g. reduced income tax for some sectors - have been thrown out with the bath water, but the voting was for party political reasons, not for the welfare of France or its people. For Marine, of course, it's a race against time. But her peccadillos are nothing that our own MEPs didn't do, it's just that we're more discreet and not so blatant about it...

Poor old Barmier looks like a politician from a different age, not unlike our own dear Sir Kier. Popular sentiments are moving fast and in unpredictable ways. Could the Fifth Republic actually collapse?

Indeed I am, because liberalism is not the root cause of western decline. Unless one relies on GB News/Daily Mail/Daily Express for one's opinions.

.

The right wing media (authoritarian) will blame all ills on the left wing media (liberal). And vice versa.

.

Western hegemony is declining for an awful lot of other, more nuanced and weightier reasons. Ultimately however, all empires fall, both of their own doing and other's influence.
