Higher parking charges for larger cars

Some councils are bringing in higher parking charges for larger cars.
Good idea or not?
I think it’s an excellent idea, cars have got much bigger over the past few decades but the roads haven’t. Large cars are mostly unnecessary and anything that can be done to discourage them is good. |

What would you be paying for exactly? The privilege of filling-up slightly more space between the white lines? No, sounds like an excuse for yet another tax to me. Anyway, given the falling footfall in town centres, I'd have though councils would be incentivising cars with paying customers. |

The only way I would support this is if car parks had a section with bigger spaces, these could be charged at a premium and if people wanted to make use of them to make it easier to park their large vehicle then it would be their choice.
The council would have to make a decision on whether they thought the revenue increase on these spaces would generate more income than the reduction in numbers would decrease income |

Guess you know absolutely NOTHING about the countryside when you say Large cars are unnecessary and you want to discourage them.
I drive a Toyota Hilux for a number of reasons, 1; being that I stalk deer on private estates and drive off road
2; being that I have two 12 stone dogs that need the rear cab to carry them and 3; I have the ability to stop and tow poxy little broken down cars that can't handle the snow and ice of Scottish Winters, that includes EV'S whose owners have no idea that minus temperatures draw down the batteries of electric cars.
Maybe you should remember that and be greatful the next time you break down in a little car.
Plus during COVID-19 period, I was one of a number of 4x4 drivers who collected and drove doctors and nurses into work during high snow.
As for councils putting up parking prices, I will simply not go into town and the Shops will lose out.

So i need a vehicle that can fit 5 of us in, tow a trailer upto 3.5t carry feed and 4x4 as animals still need feeding and caring for even in the snow so where does that me??? Big 4x4 and now parking penality charges on top of high tax and fuel consumption 🤷 |

Makes sense in city centres where there's not much space. But it only works if there are good alternatives to driving in. Bus services, trains, park and rides etc. |

And for every one person who may genuinely need something like a Hilux there are 10 or more who don’t, but still drive stupidly big cars. The “SUV” trend has greatly increased the size of cars but not made them more practical. The most stupid ones are the 2wd ones - completely pointless.
As for driving in snow, small cars with the correct tyres and appropriate driving technique can do pretty well. Light weight and narrow all season or winter tyres count for a lot in the majority of places. |

Yes. And allowed in bus lanes by default, however Labour have cancelled this proposal. |

We need to reduce the volume of the larger cars but this shouldn't be the primary tool to achieve this. Most of them are not essential and have resulted from manufacturers progressively increasing sizes. |

This is just another tax on the driver nothing to do with larger cars.
The worst place I know is london where you even have to pay to park in your own street as well as the LEZ and congestion charge .
We pay road tax for bad roads
High fuel price’s because the government makes more
High insurance because people
Like to steal others peoples cars

We don't pay Road Tax, as it was abolished in 1937. We pay Car Tax (or strictly Vehicle Excise Duty).
Car Tax is not reserved for roads. It's just another tax that goes straight into the government's big pot. |

Bigger cars take up more space. Not an issue in the countryside but certainly an issue in towns, cities and villages.
Quite a large proportion of Families appear to already own two or more cars between them and houses (especially older houses) simply do not have the parking spaces so people park on the streets.
The streets themselves don't have the room so what is the answer?
All very well blaming the Labour government for trying to find a solution or simply turning a blind eye and denying that there is a problem - that appears to be the norm on this forum for many.
Cities simply cannot accommodate the existing number of cars and one way to address that to some extent is to try and encourage people to buy smaller cars.
The argument that a family needs a large car is ridiculous when you consider that an old Ford E$cort was smaller than a new mini and people managed "back in the day".
Get real folks or see access to towns and cities being limited in some other way. |

I think this is absolutely crazy and where does it end?
Its nothing but a thinly disguised tax.
I mean where will we end up next, do we start charging for the air an engine consumes? Because a higher capacity engined car will use more air, do we then charge more for that car?
I find UK attitudes towards things inflicted upon us very odd, we are very accepting of being shafted.
I admire the French, I remember been stuck at Calais because the farmers had blocked the A16 with burning logs and tractors because government had put up fuel duty.
Government removed the increase the following day. That is real people power right there and I admire it.

What we need to remember is....
A Hilux is Not a Car, a hilux is classed as a van and pays van classification road tax etc
I don't really care if they charge more for larger vehicles as I try to avoid city centers etc
The more people who boycott, the less council income and shops will continue to close down

The government recently u turned on proposal to tax double cab 4x4 as cars. It was supposed to come in July but not now. I run an old Navara for work it is a double cab, back seats unused. Although I’d agree many are show ponies particularly the new ford rangers |
