Early days of winter yet, but this cold snap we've had has got me thinking..

..Has the government decided only to give cold weather payments, should the need arise, only to certain pensioners along the lines of the new restrictions on Winter Fuel Allowance?

As they don't have a clue as to what they are doing, they don't seem to care other than filling some sink hole they've invented.

Maybe they thought global warming would get them off the hook.

I know a neighbour near me is going to be hit, and may just switch off the heating.

Hypothermia inevitable for alot of pensioners.

I suspect that a lot of these Labour policies will have to be revisited.

I guess we all do a bit of “learning on a the job” but it’s not great when the UK government is trying to work out what it is doing as it goes along.

The genuinely poor pensioners on top-up benefits will rightly get the winter fuel payments. Those that are ineligible are deemed to be able to pay to heat their homes.

Universal handouts are not a good choice as some pensioners own more, and receive more income, than the poorer younger people who pay taxes to fund the winter fuel payments.

I would like a Blue Badge disabled parking permit so I can park my Jaguar, unhindered, virtually anywhere. However, I am not in any way disabled, so I am not getting one. That seems so unfair but no-one is talking about that as uncaring Government.

Your argument doesn’t hold up. Those pensioners were once the poorer young people, contributing to the system and paying their dues. To deny them support now feels contradictory.

I suggested a sliding scale on here some time ago and it was shot down as the govt apparently didn't have the time to go through the individual cases of each pensioner. I suggest they find the time, use AI, or reflect on how to U-turn because this is another disaster waiting to happen.

Most ineligible pensioners received a letter telling them that they wouldn't be receiving the winter fuel allowance and telling them where go for help if they need it.

The ones who will suffer are those who fall just outside the threshold for pension credit or the ones who refuse to apply for it.

"I don't know the answer to the original question though "

I do……

A) Those people who are eligible for cold weather payments (and it’s not just pensioners) would get it automatically within their particular benefit…

B) to be eligible for cold weather payments, it must be below 0 degrees for 7 consecutive days…..

I don’t think that has been applicable to any part of the country so far

The big problem with the new rules is the cut off point being so low. Also the notion that most pensioners are wealthy and this notion being used to set the cut off point. If they wanted to only hit the wealthy pensioners then they could have withdrawn the payments to any pensioners on 40% tax. Labour's own figures show at least 50000 pensioners will be going into poverty due to this policy and possibly thousands of deaths.

And Scotland has it’s own winter heating rules run by the Scottish executive (you know.. that devolved government thing)

So the “cold weather payment” thing only applies to England, Wales and Northern Ireland

The cut off point is too low. That's the general consensus, And I agree.

All you means testers will be handing back your £ 400 quid or giving it to the Pensioner who needs it more than you do then. I bet Starmer or Reeves didn't give their £ quid back to charity.

I wonder how many of those pensioners used to be in a union and who’s working conditions were improved because of it.

We're two of them and if anyone thinks pensioners can't fight back they're wrong. We can't withdraw our labour obviously but we have plenty of time to email our mp and we're even allowed to vote

I have some elderly acquaintances, at election time I always tell them to make sure they vote, cos at their age and elections every 5 years it could be the last opportunity they get.
