Should the new Archbishop of Canterbury be a Christian?
Jump to: Newest in thread
Is the resignation of Justin Wokeby an historic opportunity for the Church of England to be truly inclusive?
Why should this top job be exclusively for Christian?
Several Archbishops did not even believe in God so surely this should no longer be a closed shop ? |

Justin Wokeby made the role a very political one so I felt it was the appropriate place. |

Did he? This obsession with the former Arch Bishop of Canterbury is strange and his no place in a politics forum , might be better in the lounge |

The church has big fish to fry....falling attendances, local buildings requiring huge sums of money for repair, the abuse scandal.
IMHO it's unlikely that the next appointment will address these core issues. |

I think it’s time for the C of E to ditch Christianity. Maybe they should try Islam instead. Seems to get a lot more traction and has more of a future given UK demographics.
Wokeby’s main achievement seems to have been to reduce weekly national congregation attendances by 25,000 each year he has held office.
I’m sure the next incumbent will continue the trend. Probably focusing on important stuff like intersectionality, DEI, the sl*ve trade, doing what they can to encourage more mass immigration, closing churches and installing some heat pumps.
Expect the decline to continue apace.

It should ideally be headed by someone who is a believer in their religion, I would think. It has amassed lots of money and property, as well as power from us and gets massive tax breaks, at our cost, solely due to being a religion. With millions globally under him, he needs to be Christian, to keep it together and lead. |

It has constitutional factors, he conducts the coronation of the Monarch who is head of the church ideally he should be holier than everyone and the closest thing to God, yes he should be a believing Christian.
I think the coronation should be redone as his authority has been destroyed and made him invalid to conduct the coronation.
I also believe he should be bursting into whorehouses brandishing a bible shouting confess all ye sinners of the flesh. |

the archbishop of Canterbury has always been a partly political appointment , he can sit in the house of lords & his appointment has to be approved by the king & the prime minister |

Fair comment, I forgot that he was in the lords |

"It would send out all the right signals of love, peace, inclusiveness and general wokeness if the incumbent was a Muslim. "
Justin Wokeby never expressed any concern with the massacre of Nigerian Christians by those of that faith so I think he would approve. |

Why should this top job be exclusively for Christian?
That made me laugh. I would have thought that being a Christian and specifically a member of the CofE faith would be the starting point for anyone who aspires to this appointment. |

You might think so but Justin Welby said he doesn't always believe in God, which I'd always imagined was pretty essential for the head of a religion. |

Just heard? Jim Davidson to be the next Archbishop of Cunterbury, he has a new non woke agenda, involving allowing racist and bigoted jokes, sermons on how to go bankrupt and get divorced 5 times unfortunately he won’t preach in front of disabled people though |

"Seems to me that we don't need a new Arch-Bishop at all.
Isn't it about time that we recognised that these people aren't doing good, and should just be removed from their role in parliament."
Probably, then get rid of the royal family |

Yes I don't understand that part of their role. |

Ironically, they're supposed to be the voice of morality, holding the government to account. |

Unreal question. It's a branch of Christianity so therefore the leader is a Christian - a followers of Christ.
Was this a genuine question or a piss take

That is incorrect. The Crown Nominations Committee independently submts two nomìnations. A PM could theoretically reject the first nomination, but cannot reject a second. Interestingly, a Catholic or Jewish PM cannot make that decision and it is well publicised that 2TK attends synagogue every week. An arcane and largely ceremonial process if ever there was one. |

He will have to decline, he has 4 mps to look after, and they are hoping to get 10 next time |

The Church of England has announced its shortlist for the next Archbishop of Canterbury, to be chosen at a special meeting of the Bishops in January:
John Sentamu, former Archbishop of York
Carole Vorderman, renowned mathematician.
Hamza Useless, former First Minister of Scotland.
Alex Scott, former international footballer.
Ginger Spice, former Spice Girl and Philanthropist.
All excellent choices for a 21st Century Church.

What, not even Shamima Begum? Where's your spirit of inclusiveness? |

Apparently she just missed the shortlist as she couldn't get to the interview. A nation's loss I feel. |

They’ll have 10 by the next election. If I was setting a spread it’d be 45-50, which based on your 400% under appreciation is about right |

"This is a joke right?
As it's only Christianity we're allowed to take the pee. Other religions, not so much."
Come on. We are on a swinger site so let's do some swapping. All in the name of inclusivity of course.
I nominate the bishop of York to take Friday prayers down at the local Mosque. The chief Rabbi to take over as Archbishop of Westminster. The Hindu Council could run the synagogues and I'm sure we could find an Imam or two that could take over at Lambeth Palace.
This could be fun. |
