Britain must work on vital alliances with other countries following victory of climate-denier Trump

The UK must ramp up its efforts on renewable energy to foster national security in an increasingly uncertain world, the energy secretary, Ed Miliband, has warned, on the eve of a fraught global summit on the climate crisis.

Miliband says the UK would lead efforts at Cop29 to secure the global agreement needed to stave off the worst impacts of climate breakdown, in talks that have been thrown into turmoil by the re-election of Donald Trump as US president.

In other news Labour U turned on green energy investment just prior to the election

Oh no where is greta when you need her to ward off the Orange Man.

Are you saying your in on nucleur power. All this wind mill stuff with unrecyclable blades, and blades coming apart in the ocean killing marine life. Solar panels getting broken in rainstorms and now polluting land fills.

Yep good thing they are going to action stations and putting all the climate people in panic mode.

Good on you.

It seems like the countries keenest on pushing renewables are the ones with the weakest economies.

Not sure what the link is.

climate change is real. It has been changing for 4.5bn years…. To what extent this is man made is s dependent on which scientist you listen to and who has funded them..

Follow the science and you will find the money.

Hi there, if you don’t respect what people want then you don’t respect democracy. Green energy is the future and a few grumpy luddites won’t change anything. It is the will of the people

Hi there, I am living in the real world, there was only one party at the last election in the UK running on an anti green energy agenda, they were thoroughly rejected at the ballot box. New technology is often met with resistance for 2 main reasons, people don’t like or are scared of change, and a lack of understanding. Luddites have been around since early 1800s , at first they were losing their shit over the spinning jenny, now they are doing it with green energy

Amusing anecdote there. Indeed the Luddite mentality did obstruct technological progress. They were very much against motor cars with a preference for horses. Very much in favour of windmills and against efficient and reliable power sources. Hard to imagine that people once thought that relying on wind for our energy was sensible

No it should not.

It should stop all this ridiculous net zero bullsh*t and stop demonising the internal combustion engine, hydrocarbons and CO2.

No rational sane government thinks it can power a modern western country on solar and wind.

We need hydrocarbons, nuclear power stations and if you want to look at alternative forms then fine.

But you don't stop using the source that have powered the west and allowed us to advance enormously until, yes until, an alternate has been perfected.

The Germans tried going green. All it did was put up utility prices and they had to flip the gas and coal power stations back on.

Foolishness on an industrial scale.

That is a good point. We could just kill off most of the plant and animal life (we're good at doing that), pile it all on the edge of a tectonic plate, wait for it to subduct, and viola! Fresh oil.

Mind you, if we want to keep the lights on for the several million years that would take, we might have to come up with another form of power while we're waiting for the oil to mature.

Trump might not be quite as anti renewables as he was the last time around. This time he has Elon Musk whispering in his ear and that man has a huge vested interest in alternative energy sources.

Assuming this is a genuine question. A definition of a fossil is "something preserved in rock for a very long time" hence fossil fuels are energy sources that are found buried in rock strata. All the types we know know of contain energy emitted by the sun and captured by biological processes before the organisms that stored that energy became deposited within new rock strata.

Last time around he had Musk whispering in his ear.

He left shortly into Trumps reign because he pulled the US out of the Paris climate accord.

Are you a troll?

Crude oil *is* the fossil.

Definition of a fossil - something preserved in rock for a very long time

Crude oil - something that has been preserved in rock for a very long time

See where I'm going with this?

Sun and solar do not always work in the uk. Therefore have to be subsidised at huge cost (we already have some of the highest energy bills in europe). Nuclear is the only option.

Solar panels work even when it’s cloudy, admittedly they are less efficient though

"Sun and solar do not always work in the uk. Therefore have to be subsidised at huge cost (we already have some of the highest energy bills in europe). Nuclear is the only option."

Where did this info come from? The UK stopped subsidies for large solar installations in 2015.

This is what I love about Luddites, they take a view in opposition to something new, base this opinion on all the existing problems without any consideration that these may be overcome and then continue to repeat these same arguments years and years after they've become obsolete.

I agree, a nuclear backbone to our energy strategy is likely essential but that doesn't negate the usefulness of solar and inventing arguments does little to help the debate.

Taking your comment on cost, the new plant at Hinckley is (as of 2023) set to cost £128.09/MWh, solar is around £41. Wind varies on location but I believe the government is offering £77/MWh for new Maine installations
