How can public display of grief for celebrated figures be considered woke?

People who use woke in a derogatory manner all have their own personal definition. So anything they don't like can be considered woke.

Ok the answer to the question is that this was not woke.

I could tell you what it is from a spiritual point of view. There will also be social theories and psychological theories of the cause of mass grief.

"Awareness of social injustice, especially racism."

With that definition:

Pride - designed to let sexual minorities have a fun party - not woke.

Black History Month - designed to teach people about black members of society and promote inclusion - woke.

The next question is, do those identified as woke-fearing, actually fear this definition of woke?

If individuals want to have fun with parties or want to spend time on black history month, that's fine. It's when they try to force it on others that it gets woke. Pretty similar to religion. People can believe whatever they want to believe if it makes them happy.

Don't force it on others. Don't expect others to change their behaviour just because some people find certain things offensive.

After some consideration, here is my explanation of woke and its use:

Woke is used to describe actions or changes seen as prioritising the interests of a minority, mostly at the expense of the majority or in an attempt to appear inclusive, even when the change ends up isolating more people and becoming contradictory.

People don’t fear the word or the associated behaviours, trends, or philosophies. Instead, they use woke to express in a single word that x changes have become detrimental or imbalanced, potentially undermining the majority view or altering societal norms without sufficient justification, aside from appeasing a very small group.

It is a term that captures the perceived impact of these actions rather than reflecting a fear of the underlying values

But there has been awareness of social injustice for centuries, maybe millennia. What is different now that a word is needed which Martin Luther King or Nelson Mandela managed to live without?

The difference is that woke is: 'performative awareness of social injustice, especially racism.' It is the public performance of activism and political language which separates woke from traditional anti racism or anti discrimination work.

The BLM movement was a 'great' example of this: very visible public protests and riots which actually led (in the US) to huge increases in young black men being killed (mostly by other young black men) as police were withdrawn in response to BLM demands.

What matters is how you are seen to be, not what you actually achieve. Woke is a perfect ideology for the Social media obsessed millennials, and no surprise its modern usage began as a hashtag.

Yeah, that’s about right.

I think confusion arises in how the term is used. Basically, it is overused, and applied in situations that have little or nothing to do with the (correct) definition that you have given

The irony that 'woke' has a fixed and uncontested meaning is off the charts !

A huge part of woke ideology consists of redefining words as offensive and unusable when they have been in common and inoffensive use for many decades.

The act of forcing change upon people, when the original item, subject or thinking is widely understood and accepted as a correct definition, into a definition or belief only held by a few can be seen and considered wokeism.

"After some consideration, here is my explanation of woke and its use:

"

After some of my own consideration here is my definition of woke:

Someone who hasn't ever eaten branflakes, hasn't even saluted a full moon. Or someone who says they like crumpets, but secretly they don't, they just don't want to look anti-crumpet in front of their friends.

Woke or being politically correct doesn't mean being aware of social injustices like some of you lot like to believe. It actually means wanting to control what others say to suit ones narrative and thinking and its proven even down to films and tv shows you lot watch. Again this ain't my personal opinion about it, it's facts

"A couple of questions to our woke fearing friends

Is pride woke

Is black history month woke

Please define woke.

Awareness of social injustice, especially racism.

Negative semantics to undermine the word and meaning is probably hindering a wider understanding. I also call into doubt, that in the 2 minutes it took you to read, digest, think and respond to my post you had time to look for that poll anywhere.

I have gone full circle and will leave it there.

Many Woke people consider themselves to have a higher knowledge and to be cognisant of something that other people have not considered.

There is an assumption that their thought process is more sophisticated and they need to "wake" other people up, they must alert these other people to their superior view, even by aggressive tactics.

Anyone with "Wake Up" tattooed across their chest or forearm is alerting others to their superior message.

There is an assumption on their part, that others are sleepwalking and need life advice. Unsolicited interruptions to share their subjective viewpoint:Rude!!

"After some consideration, here is my explanation of woke and its use:

After some of my own consideration here is my definition of woke:

Someone who hasn't ever eaten branflakes, hasn't even saluted a full moon. Or someone who says they like crumpets, but secretly they don't, they just don't want to look anti-crumpet in front of their friends. "

I concede, how can I go forward from this.

That's a very good attempt at a definition Anyone with the vaguest shred of intelligence knows exactly what "woke" means in today's parlance. However, trying to explain it to someone who doesn't know what it means is impossible, and any definition except their own will be invariably be met with sarcasm, anger, or wilful feigned ignorance which are the usual responses of the poorly educated and hard of thinking. It would be like trying to explain the rules of cricket to a bath sponge.

Perceptions of social injustice may vary.

I ld compare being "Woke" to being an aggressive religious person or an aggressive atheist, both presuming they KNOW best.

The opposite is being agnostic, having your view and understanding it is subjective and others may hold a different view and not needing to force your view on others. Being capable of consideration, without having to win the battle of being the best at "right/correct" think.

"How can public display of grief for celebrated figures be considered woke?

Re someone's post on the deaths of Di and the Queen.

It was a question? Do people think it was woke? I do think it was really an over reaction but that’s my opinion

Ok the answer to the question is that this was not woke.

I could tell you what it is from a spiritual point of view. There will also be social theories and psychological theories of the cause of mass grief.

Another Google it

Agreed. There were all sorts of contributory factors in both cases, but thru had nothing to do with being “woke” "

I've just created a great catchphrase - if there is no ism, there is no woke.

"Woke or being politically correct doesn't mean being aware of social injustices like some of you lot like to believe. It actually means wanting to control what others say to suit ones narrative and thinking and its proven even down to films and tv shows you lot watch. Again this ain't my personal opinion about it, it's facts

"Perceptions of social injustice may vary.

Very well put 👏

"A couple of questions to our woke fearing friends

Is pride woke

Is black history month woke

Please define woke.

Awareness of social injustice, especially racism.

If it's a job requirement, you have to suck it up. You don't want to pay taxes, tough. You don't want to take part in awareness training (diversity), tough. Suck it up buttercup.

As for others' thoughts and opinions, you don't like them, then ignore "

We are sucking it up while complaining about it. We are sucking it up because it's part of our job. We raise our voice because it's bullshit. In case you haven't noticed, companies are now getting serious backlash about DEI. Thanks to employee backlash, many companies are slowly cooling down on the DEI push.

Thanks to consumer backlash, companies are cooling down on pushing woke agenda on ads.

Then there was the judgement from US supreme court making affirmative action in universities illegal.

In other words, the world is healing from the woke disease

"A couple of questions to our woke fearing friends

Is pride woke

Is black history month woke

Please define woke.

Awareness of social injustice, especially racism.

When have you been stopped from doing or saying things that others find offensive? I don’t think I have ever been forced into liking pride or black history month

Once again, just because you didn't go through something doesn't mean it hasn't happened to others. This might be painful to hear. But the world doesn't revolve around you."

Likewise, if it was such a big deal you would have left your job

"A couple of questions to our woke fearing friends

Is pride woke

Is black history month woke

Please define woke.

Awareness of social injustice, especially racism.

If it's a job requirement, you have to suck it up. You don't want to pay taxes, tough. You don't want to take part in awareness training (diversity), tough. Suck it up buttercup.

As for others' thoughts and opinions, you don't like them, then ignore

We are sucking it up while complaining about it. We are sucking it up because it's part of our job. We raise our voice because it's bullshit. In case you haven't noticed, companies are now getting serious backlash about DEI. Thanks to employee backlash, many companies are slowly cooling down on the DEI push.

Thanks to consumer backlash, companies are cooling down on pushing woke agenda on ads.

Then there was the judgement from US supreme court making affirmative action in universities illegal.

In other words, the world is healing from the woke disease

At the end of the day you will do what your told at work, if you don’t like it either go self employed or get another job at a company without a ‘woke agenda’ it was obviously not such a big deal, because you stayed

After all

Why shouldn't I stay in the company and point out their bullshit? As I mentioned above, it seems to be working. As more and more employees are getting vocal against it. What's your problem with that?

The problem is your making a huge deal out of something trivial, if it was me , and it was so important, I would have left out of principle

Unlike you, I have the balls to fight against this nonsense

You mean you didn’t have the courage of your convictions and leave?

So running scared from something is courage and conviction for you? "

, anyway, does the woke agenda haunt you away from work as well?

Erm. That's exactly what these two have built their entire public careers on.

You are wrong.

Evidence suggests that I am correct.

Show me 1 example of what you say is evidence proving you are correct.

Ah come on. Are we back to asking for evidence that the moon isn't made of cheese. I thought we were past this nonsense.

A. Farage with the Breaking Point poster.

B. Tommy Robinson with pretty much anything that comes out of his mouth.

We're now so far away from the point being made it's ridiculous. If you want to get into a 'prove Tommy Robinson is a racist' nonsense. Then I'm out."

You stated specific comments in your post.

You are now generalising your comments. You are well aware that paraphrasing as you said you had done, on an important reference is going to help you lay the ground in a way that suits you rather than quoting specific content that can be cross checked.

I take your point that we have wandered away, but not as far as you may think.

I won’t press you on the specifics to back up what you said, if you had them you would have provided them already.

farage as never ever said that Tommy as never ever said that either see this is what I think is woke feelings over facts like yr post total nonsense

Did you reply to the wrong person by mistake?no replied to you did they say what you say they said or is it yr opinion ?

Yea. Their entire public facing careers have been based on attacking foreigners, and Muslims respectively.

(Oxymoron Homonym on purpose )exactly they didn’t your doing that work thing again using feelings rather than facts your feeling are reall to you but facts are reall the everyone the fact they never said what you say they said is the end of it because it’s a fact

What?

Blokey said about Woke "actually means wanting to control what others say to suit ones narrative and thinking".

I gave him some examples of people wanting to control how others think.your talking nonsense you said farage = foreigners are your enemy Tommy = Muslims are your enemy that’s total nonsense there yr feelings not facts

Then I'm out.

Excellent.

They were just examples of what the other chap described as his personal definition of woke.

Does he explain to his followers how to spot an Islamist extremist. Does he tell His followers how to on how to differentiate them from peaceful Muslims or Buddhists or Hindus or even Asian Christian’s.

Interesting take, so in your version of Woke were talking people like.

Nigel Farage: 'foriegners are your enemy'.

Tommy Robinson: 'Muslims are your enemy'

Donald Trump: 'climate science isn't real'

farage as never ever said that Tommy as never ever said that either see this is what I think is woke feelings over facts like yr post total nonsense

Then I'm out.

Excellent.

They were just examples of what the other chap described as his personal definition of woke.

***tommy = islam is your enemy

Never muslims always been islam yrs but he said Muslims because that’s his feelings but never a fact that’s as woke as it gets feeling over fact lol

Are you telling people how to think? This is the very definition of "woke" (according to the bloke I was originally replying to).

not at all it’s you that is replacing facts with yr feelings he’s against exremist islam you replace it with he hates Muslims for a guy that claims to be a scientist you don’t seem to like facts I’d of thought that was everything to you no wonder my faith in scientists as faded lol

This sounds ultra woke now (going by that one chap's definition).

Made up what the "facts" are, telling people what to think. but your a scientist and you make things up if anyone I’d of thought atleast you would be factual "

If, Johnny, like me has a BSc or further, he won't make up facts. Evidence makes facts until "stronger" evidence occurs.

Why are you trying to make this thread about me?

Let's try to stay on topic. The woke-worrier said his personal definition of woke is "actually means wanting to control what others say to suit ones narrative and thinking".

Such as people like Farage, Tommy Robinson, Trump, Katie Hopkins, etc.

Can anyone come with an example of any of those people telling us what to say?

There is a funny Bill Maher video about the wokeism

Remember Bill Maher is a liberal and staunch democrat supporter. One of the few from the centre left who actually see the ideology for what it is

My link should have ended the thread, but I bet I'm the only person who has read it. But then I like words, their history and their evolved usage.

Fact: woke exists. Fact: the usage has changed. Fact: it started as a positive. Fact: it now has a negative connotation which means it's less used positively.

It's only a negative connotation for people panicking about a pride flag popping up in the work place, Trump telling them what to say, or being weak minded enough for a woke movie to change the way they think.
