So Australia is currently to debate trying to ban social media without parental consent for the under 16s. If it passes platforms will have to take reasonable measures to implement the controls, I guess like porn, age verification
Do you think this is a good objective? |

Sounds like a massive waste of time and money to me.
A ban on all under 16s might be a good idea. But allowing it with parental consent just means that parents will be constantly badgered to give permission. Parents won't know which platforms are trustworthy, so they'll just give the kids whatever they want when they get fed up with the nagging.
This proposed ban will end up with the social media platforms spending a lot of money to implement controls that will only be used by half a dozen parents, whose kids will find other ways round it. |

"I think it will be favoured by the left leaning politicians for obvious reasons "
Eh?
Isn't it more conservative value parents who want "kids to remain kids"?
We generally support strict controls on smartphones and social media for children, tapering off as they age, but would not identify it with left or right politics. There is a lot of potential harm to vulnerable minds, and we are personally aware of at least one teen suicide directly related to social media. |

Agreed.
How does common sense work when a 10 year old with a smartphone is sent beastiality porn by a friend?
Or shown photos of a dismembered body?
Or is groomed by that cute kid in her class at school who shares her nude photos with his friends?
If you honestly think that you can guarantee that none of these will happen, or that there is definite and comprehensive mitigation available if it does, utilising common sense rather than tapered control, then you have some amazing common sense.
If what you mean to say is that reasonable control is simply common sense, then we agree. |
