I love cars ! I love to drive ! I love powerful cars! I especially love my BMW !
But the new car tax hike planned for next year may have me giving up my pride and joy!
I pay £270 a year for road tax but labour has plans on increasing it to £540!
Current first year car tax rates compared to expected 2025-26 hikes
0g/km - £0 will rise to £10
1 to 50g/km - £10 will rise to £110
51 to 75g/km - £30 will rise to £130
76 to 90g/km - £135 will rise to £270
91 to 100g/km - £175 will rise to £350
101 to 110g/km - £195 will rise to £390
111 to 130g/km - £220 will rise to £440
131 to 150g/km - £270 will rise to £540
151 to 170g/km - £680 will rise to £1,360
171 to 190g/km - £1,095 will rise to £2,190
191 to 225g/km - £1,650 will rise to £3,300
226 to 255g/km - £2,340 will rise to £4,680
Over 255g/km - £2,745 will rise to £5,490

Yeah Hydrogen is more practical when from users' perspective. The only trouble is the cost of hydrogen production. If there is a good breakthrough on Hydrogen production, it would easily replace EVs. Toyota is betting really big on hydrogen and investing much less on EVs. It would be interesting to see how that pans out. |

All these measures are punitive, designed to raise funds by villainising an easy target.
Today’s driving habits are owning cars and rarely using them, that is the real obstacle to reducing pollution.
Switching to electric or hydrogen only shifts the pollution source. Shared, driverless taxis reduce the need for car ownership and manufacturing, cutting traffic, lowering resource demand, and decreasing pollution more effectively by using fewer cars more efficiently.
The issue lies with us, our habits, and, dare I say, a council and Government that prefer us owning cars.
If the above is not a place you want to be as a car owner / lover, the taxation will continue to rise. |

Mercedes has invested over 2.6billion Euros (£2.01billion) in development and production of its new modular diesel engine family, plus 500million Euros (£388m) in a new lithium-ion battery factory in Germany.
You can see where they feel the near future really is though. I believe ev are short term as most countries will not properly invest in the necessary infrastructure required to move properly...it's a rich man's toy and for leasing.
Vw have just released a 10% reduction in EV sales for this year compared to the same period last year. BMW have a similar reduction in EV sales. They attribute it to the competition from China and lack of investment from the German government. KIA on the other hand have had a record breaking sales on EVs this year. |

lol if I am buying a 140k SUV / sports car I am going to give zero fucks about increased road tax . This will not affect the well off in that sense to detour.
It will totally wreck 2hand values of older cars though that are currently bought by mid earning persons |

Most of these ‘save the environment’ taxes on cars are dreamt up by idiots who either live in London where public transport is readily available or by other idiots that are chauffeured around in vehicles that are paid for by the taxpayer….

hydrogen fuel cells produce electricity, so currently cars like the Mirai (powered by HFC) are actually EV's, so they ain't going anywhere |

Correct but they will set these new levels for secondhand vehicles each year as they get older, so in say 5-10 years this is what they will cost plus the yearly inflationary increases the government deems necessary. |

Nio is also close to releasing those batteries. Nio also makes cars which do battery swaps in stations in a few minutes so that you don't have to wait for long to charge. The whole process of battery swap is fully automated while you can sit in the car. Amazing tech. Going to be interesting to see which one wins in the long run. |

Your not paying those figures you quoted on your existing car, that’s year one price only then it goes down to the standard rate of 190. Plus the 410 if applicable. Don’t want to pay those new rates, don’t buy a new car it really is very simple. Your existing car is not going to cost you much more if anything other than inflation. |

Indeed but that's not the point. The poster said it's only for new vehicles as if it would have no later relevence which I was pointing out it it had significant relevance as thebhike was from £30 to £130 so any one wanting to buy that car in 5 or 10 years time wouldn't nt be paying £30 (my car is currently £30 and has been for many years) but I'd end up paying about £200 plus under the current changes for that car in 5-10 years. Multiply this by every car and you see the significance. |

The rates have been going up yearly. I pay more for my motorbike than most small to medium size cars, a reflection that it's less to do with environmental issues than they'd lead us to believe.

The news tax levels are only for the first year of ownership, they don't apply after that first year. |

Maybe one person in a million wondered that back then, if they didn't understand the vast difference of energy used by even a valved CRT screen telly of yesteryear and the power needed now to shift a car and its occupant(s). |

The poster said it's only for new vehicles as if it would have no later relevence which I was pointing out it it had significant relevance as thebhike was from £30 to £130 so any one wanting to buy that car in 5 or 10 years time wouldn't nt be paying £30 (my car is currently £30 and has been for many years) but I'd end up paying about £200 plus under the current changes for that car in 5-10 years. Multiply this by every car and you see the significance.

That's good to hear if true... surprised it is as government never gives away something they can take. Why take for one year when they could easily continue taking it every year afterwards. |
