Seriously?

Are the government stupid or am I missing something?

Is there any company specifically producing goods for the UK that would for different sockets to the rest of the EU ?

What am I missing?

Actually……. No….

But for example my Apple phone last year went from lightning to usb-c… my home computer still uses a USB-a power cord, and my wireless headphones use a micro USB cord… my car still has a 3.5 aux slot!!!

So anything that says I only need to use 1 cord for I am all for!!!!

I don’t see why people are complaining about this

Not a complaint, the EU has decided and apple seems to have complied so why would the UK need to waste time and money implementing a law which is unnecessary.

Will apple make special devices for the UK only ?

To be fair _abio, that's partly down to car manufacture as think most have a hidden aux port ... as they prefer sounds via their systems instead. Trust me I hate it too 🤣

The original law adopted by the EU was short-sighted to begin with. But as most people easily fall for deceptive governments who pass these regulations and tell people stories about "Look how I am fighting those evil corporates", it's an easy vote winner.

So it’s better to have/ need 4/5 different cables than just the one…

Well that’s a contrary way to look at it!

A better way to look at it - If you had this law 2 decades back, you wouldn't have had USB C by now.

End of the day it was a move to force Apple to switch to USB-C. If you really want to use same type of chargers, why don't you buy phones which all already have USB-C?

Yes you would have… because the EU law doesn’t specifically say that everything has to be usb-c, it say that everything must be in the “industry standard “ and if the industry standard is to change they must give people 5 years notice

Who are the people who decide what the industry standard is… it’s not politicians! it’s the industry themselves! The manufacturers between themselves decide and have meetings!

Remember what the U in USB stands for… it’s universal!

So when someone better and more efficient comes along the industry decides that will become the new standard.. and everything will change together!

Why would a company/companies develop new technology, get everyone else to agree that it's better than the old stuff and then sit on it for 5 years?

Hence, you wouldn't have usb-c.

Today if a company invents a new innovative way of charging, they will go ahead and incorporate that in their devices. If it works great, other companies will slowly catch up so that they aren't left behind.

Now you have a situation where you need the company to convince the rest of the companies to agree to it. You don't see the problem there?

You're being naive, the UK market is so insignificant they wouldn't care but they're already changing due to the EU regulations.

It is a non-issue that has been blown out of all proportion.

We use the same charger for everything. The only thing that changes is the short cable from the USB socket on the charger to the device. For our stuff we need 4 cables, 3 flavours of USB and a Lightning. No big deal and USB is the worst.

Isn't it easier to have a common cable....regardless of whether it has a Union Jack or an EU flag or even the star spangled banner or a Korean, Chinese, Taiwanese or Antarctic flag on it?

It’s about time, fed up with all those manufacturers using different charging cables just so they can charge premium prices on them 👍

USB C is a better connection anyway. The Apple lightening one was a bloody pain

You don't seem to get my tongue in cheek at the irony. The British wanted to get out of the EU to take back control and all that crap that was spouted. Now the government is following what the EU is doing with device cables. You should read the article. The EU is not forcing the UK to do anything. The UK is 'making up its own mind' and likely to follow the EU
