"Two Met officers offered their jobs back and 2 years back pay having been cleared of lying. Good news and good luck to them both "
I am confused by this case. The officers were in another vehicle and pulled over a car with closed windows "because it smelled of cannabis?" That is one hell of a sense of smell! Looking at the way the innocent couple was treated was awful and looked just like racial targeting. I hope the police get sacked again. |

They didn't pull over the car because it smelled of cannabis.
I said at the time it looked like racial profiling, but let's stick with facts. |

Cleared on appeal in the eyes of the law so you can hope until the cows come home. |

Excellent result which allows police to do their jobs without fear of falling victim to the race card. |

Are you a driver? You can smell cannabis from other vehicles quite easily |

The question people need to ask themselves is whether they want the police to be proactive or reactive.
If you don't support proactive policing expect a rise in crime, if you do support proactive policing you should expect that some people will be approached who are not breaking the law.
In either case, if people stopped being so angry the escalation of force when stopped would not be so severe.
Being aggressive is not a human right if you are innocent. |

Smell it every day all around the streets and behind cars 👍
But it was the erratic driving that got the attention |

I support proactive policing, but I've myself witnessed several incidents, where the police seemed to be bored and wanted to show their authority.
One obvious one was, I was stopped several times in a very short period, while driving through a area in Glasgow. After producing my documents and them checking information on my car registration and driving licence I was cleared.
After the 3rd stop I asked the officer, why my car had been pulled over. Because he had did a uturn to follow me after passing me. I was told because a banned driver with a car of thesame model and colour of mines, lived in the area.
I said surely you have his vehicle registration and could simply follow my car and do a radio check on my registration, without pulling me over with flashing blue light. I was told they could, but this was just as easy. |

The sheer volume of wrongdoing in general these days must be practically impossible to police, occasionally they are going to get it wrong.
It sounds a bit blasé but I'd prefer the police carry on pulling people and occasionally getting it wrong than not bothering because they are scared to upset people. |

They were just unlucky in that the people they profiled just happened to be Olympic athletes… and obviously if they had been anywhere around cannabis then obviously that would have shown up in the drug tests they would have had to have taken on a regular basis……
….. oh …. Wait…….. |

You think that the results of their statutory drug tests would have come up in a police check?

Just when I thought the police were finally being held to account.
Watched an auditor last month get mobbed searched by 10 police officers who ambushed the auditor, forcibly searched him discovered he was filming and they then rush away back to the station, without leaving him a search record.
Now the last time this auditor was treated that way 20 thousand pounds he received of which he gave all to charity.
I watched them beat the miners, take money from criminals, kill people in their custody, kick a handcuffed man in the face whilst being on the floor, rap3 and murder women.
Theirs a policeman in court this week for killing a pensioner whilst on royal duties.
The list is endless, they police by my consent, and they have taken this to mean they can lie, bend the law to suit them.

They ARE being held to account, but they're not perfect. We expect them to be boy scouts, lawyers, bouncers, punchbags, medics, counsellors .... It's hardly surprising they get it wrong some time. I doubt that motorcycle officer work up that morning saying "I'm gonna knock over and kill a pensioner today". More likely a tragic accident, yet he's in court, at the very best his career in ruins. |

Sadly it's a game the police service generally has form for playing with a stacked hand. |

I think the point is they'd be highly unlikely to engage in illicit drug use given the random nature of drug testing, in other words it's unlikely these police officers smelled cannabis in the first place. |

See ya picking up what I’m putting down……
It will be interesting to see if they decide to sue the police civilly….. |

What was the reason for pulling them over ? I thought I read somewhere it was for taking a turn/driving down a one way road
The "I can smell cannabis" has been used by some police for years, I was stopped years ago while walking down a road and searched for the same reason, But by this point in my life I had worked in police stations, I wasn't going to be intimidated and just laughed at them, pointless arguing with them |

The problem is that 3 officers said they could smell cannabis. The panel came to the decision that one of them was telling the truth but two were lying. So unless two of them had heavy colds at the time I’m not sure how that works.

Even if they were probably racist, in their behaviour, without anyone needing to fantasise about any cards. |
