The newly elected multi-millionaire MP for Great Yarmouth has promised to donate about £5,000 every month to a different local cause, starting with providing cash to “do up the tea room” of a local football club.

But his largesse has not been entirely welcomed by some local MPs from more modest backgrounds, who believe he is unfairly putting pressure on them to give up some of their own £91,346 annual basic salary.

One Labour MP, who declined to be named, said: “It’s all very well for him to do this, but of course there are some people who think MPs shouldn’t be paid and that we should do the same.”

A Conservative MP claimed that Lowe was a “part-time MP” who could afford to give up his salary. “He’s a multi-millionaire and he’s not really an MP in the way that most of us are.”

Good on him, more should do the same. There are plenty of millionaires on both frontbenches (and a fair few backbench MPs).

Maybe we should means test MPs salaries, just like Labour want to means test the WFA? I bet you many more £billions would be saved if we did….

Collectively MP’s salaries cost us £60M annually, plus pensions and expenses, and tens of billions for their mistakes.

They should be paid solely on a results based system.

Doesn't say "good cause" just cause. Even if it did I wouldn't trust this conspiracy theory nutcase not to give the money to 'throwing stones at foreigners club' or the 'science isn't real foundation '.

He's not giving up all his salary.

I'd be happy if he did a good job as an MP, which would involve dropping the conspiracy theory bollocks and stopped spreading panic about foreigners. Amongst other things. All that's far more important than this (cheap to him) publicity stunt.

I’d have a lot of good will for this if it wasn’t one tiny really small detail…..

This would be the same Rupert Lowe who can probably afford to do this as he moved his business affairs from the UK and are “held in Bermuda “

So millionaire Sir Starmer can't afford his or his wife's own clothes and I 5 years has received over £107,000 in freebies. Does he have to pay tax on any of these? Have a look at HMRC rules for the common person who receives gifts, it's just not the same country anymore.

Also note that Rishi Sunak not in the top 10 list of gifts. So who has their snouts in the trough now?

The reason the tories aren't on that list is because they changed the rules so that ministers didn't have to declare the gifts they received.

Does he receive “gifts in kind”.

I would prefer MPs kept their pay and refused the gifts (read bribes).

The Led By Donkeys billboard in Clacton On Sea is excellent.

"£132,713: amount Nigel Farage earned from second jobs in his first month as an MP".
