300m in debt yet have 450m assets in art.
Should they sell the art?
If the likes of the general public were in debt ... wouldn't the bailiffs take all the assets? |

Yes they should sell it off. |

No. The art is an asset for the people.
They should get their house in order and stop their financial incompetence. |

selling assets is a really shit idea .... any economist worth their salt would recommend using the assets as leverage to borrow .... after all, right wingers will tell you 'it's the economy, stupid' |

They are already at 66% leverage. |

The figure for art is an estimate and as soon as it became an asset for sale the price would plummet |

Actually think it's terrible with residents been asked to pay 20 percent rise on council tax, and reduction on services.
Fair play to the BBC who have exposed the assets, wonders how many other councils are doing the same? |

"Hopefully this council is not another blue print for the government to follow"
Labour are feckless and irresponsible with finances. How many of the current crop of Labour MPs do you reckon could follow a P&L and Balance Sheet? A dozen tops? |

Government finance is not like personal finance, as we learned from the snake oil salesmen in the conservative austerity attempts and Liz Truss |

"A substantial part of the debt comes from compensation owed to female employees which occurred under the previous conservative council."
Incorrect
Birmingham last had a ruling conservative council 1982 - 1984.

"The former conservative government cut £billions from their budgets, so let's see the conservatives pay that back, before assets are stripped "
Are you referencing the austerity measures needed to prevent the country from collapsing after the removal of the previous labour government in 2010? |

Irrespective of which party it was, this is a large part of the debt.
I really don't understand how this action succeeded. There is no such thing as job equivalence. If waste operatives get bonuses (maybe for working outside in all weathers) and school welfare staff don't, then if you want the bonus, change job. Don't take the easier job then bleat about it. |

A fair few……. The thing is when it happened to conservative run Kent county council, and conservative run Northamptonshire county council, the then conservative government miraculously found a way to bail them out! Hmmmmmmm |

I read about 1 particular claim. Office staff within the council claimed they were unfairly treated. They claimed certain workers who were carrying out their jobs outside were allowed to go home when they had finished their work, the claim stated they were being paid more than the office workers as a result of working less hours for the same pay.
What I didn’t read was how many times they had a break in the day, how many times they worked over or how many times the weather stopped work.
What a nonsense, they should have asked those complaining if they would like to swap roles for a month and if they still felt the same, fair enough, but swapping the air conditioned office for a rainy cold day in the estates of Birmingham isn’t something I think they would entertain. |

Part of the £100m debt comes from a Oracle IT system that they implemented where the different directorates chose to adapt rather than adopt…
Bespoke IT systems are basically a license to burn money. |

I understand from the article that many of these artworks were "gifts" or bequeathed to the city by wealthy benefactors.
.
If I was such a donor (and thus loved the city enough to bequeath an artwork), I'd be flipping furious (whether I was dead or alive) that they DIDN'T sell it to raise funds to improve their financial situation.
.
If that painting or whatever was sold and money was recouped, which then funds this service, or that service, or does public good, I'd consider that a more effective "gift" to my beloved city.
.
As nice as art may be, hungry kids and adults can't eat paintings. But can live from the proceeds of their sale. |
