of the Conservative leadership contest.

Looks like at this s stage it’s going to be Cleverly against either Jenrick or Badenoch in the final two.

Robert Jenrick: 28

Kemi Badenoch: 22

James Cleverly: 21

Tom Tugendhat: 17

Mel Stride: 16

Priti Patel: 14

I thought Tugendhat had the most support. Surprised to see Jenrick at the top.

The UK and the British are generally a rather moderate lot. I’d bet most straddle Centre/Left to Centre/Right. It is moving to the centre that gets you elected in the UK not pushing towards more extremism. Unless Labour implodes we won’t see the Tories back in Govt for a decade.

Not in the conservative party, but if I was I would be pissed off, as surely it's upto the members rather then the mps ... last couple of years as evidence

Depends. With a stale government, like the last one, then sitting in the middle can work well, just wait for the electorate to get bored with the incumbents. Same when Blair came to power, and when labour were ousted.

Labour have got in this time offering broadly similar policies to the tories, and lost the last time by offering too much of a difference.

At other times, voters want a change in direction rather than just a change in who is in charge.

And if the new leader is too far to the centre then it opens up more space for far(right)age.

It is, eventually. The MPs whittle it down to the final two and the members decide between them.

Quite so, hence disagree with that system... if your a member of a political party, union or social club, you have one vote to change things, not for the committee to decide who your allowed to vote for.

I agree in the case of the Conservatives, they’ll never be in power again if the choice of leader is left up to the mad bastards who are members.

How are they moving towards extremism exactly?

Pretty sure he will be in the final two, depends if he’s prepared to go batshit right wing as to whether he’ll have a chance though.

It really is a pathetic line-up, many are far too young to be a potential PM.

Moving gradually further away from centre/right to right to eventually far right if some of these MPs follow their misguided instinct (or true ideology).

I think lack of ability is a far more pressing issue.
