What will create a Kier bounce?

Are we possibly (please) about to see some optimism and joy returning to the UK? Will this create a halo effect that enables Starmer and gang to ride a wave of positivity?
I am of course talking about two things:
1. Bank of England reducing base rate (it is inevitable and just a question of when - maybe August!) anticipation of which is already seeing lots of mortgage rates dropping. More money in your pocket makes people feel good 
2. There is a chance, tantalisingly close, that England could win the Euro and their first senior mens tournament trophy in 58 years! With the bonus that in Spain there are anti-tourist protests so the Brits can stick it to them (maybe, Spain’s team are bloody good!)
Anything else on the horizon that could lift the mood of the country? |

It will take less than six months before we start to see serious shifts of direction in Labour. How they manage that will be the thing. |

that was the consensus amongst many tory ministers and MP's. "
We will probably have to wait until he writes a book to see his reasoning on the GE date. It will look a bit odd though if SKS tries to take credit for the improved situation while at the same time blaming anything bad on the previous government. |

Labour will undoubtedly enjoy a honeymoon period like any incoming government. But the gloss will start to tarnish as inevitable tax hikes start to hit middle income families. Other policies like onshore windfarms, removing immunity of ex soldiers in NI will further alienate conservative (with a small 'c') England. Expect a gradual decline in popularity which will turn to a plummet if Labour move to the left. |

I suggested this before the election. If sunak was confident in the Rwanda scheme and the flight due in July, he would have had this as an ace up his sleeve. If knowing something else could stop the flight, he was wise to have GE beforehand, as he could (and did) claim Rwanda was still a valid deterrent in the making. Tbh nothing was going to stop the onslaught, not even a magic wand. |

Nationalising the railways would be nice and a cheap way of doing it is not renewing the franchises. It would also avoid any silly lawsuits like when one franchise was awarded to somebody else and the other company got pissy about it. |

It's certainly cheaper to wait for the franchise to expire and then take ownership but do they also take ownership of any debts accrued and who pays if it's not profitable at some point |

The only problem that I can see with simply waiting for contracts to expire is that existing franchise owners would fail to invest in, repair or renew any infrastructure as they will not see any financial benefit. |

That's not a problem. The franchise owners only have a licence to operate the service. They don't own the trains, or the track, or the stations, or any of the signalling, power supplies, communications equipment, etc. There's nothing for them to invest in, repair or renew. |
