Have to wonder about what thought process goes through plods head? Don't they use common sense anymore?
Don't often agree with Chris Packham but think he's totally right on this one. |

Not sure we need Packham’s “guidance” on this one, but anyway the police seem to have totally lost the plot. |

Two weeks ago had the police turn up at a bungalow , person they were looking for had climbed in through an open obviously ground floor window. Presumably to follow protocol they chainsaw’d a recent pvc door to gain access. New door frame plus making good £1200. Plus boarding up £400 +vat. Mindless
Taxpayer will end up paying both |

I saw a 'mouthy teenager' being slammed against an Ad-shell bus stop once - shattering two 8 foot reinforced glass plates. Cost to the council £4800. Cost to the teenager, fractured skull and a well-developed hatred of the police.

Easy for us to criticise the police from our sofas. A loose cow is a danger to the public. That's their priority = protect the public. If some hapless kid got trampled the headlines would be "Police fail to disable charging bull". They can't win. They are faced with split second decisions that mostly go the right way. In this case who knows? The outcome could have been tragic. |

Absolutely disgraceful handling by Surrey police and so upsetting to watch It was only a calf and in the footage I have seen, it appeared relatively calm and was just trotting along. Ramming into it at speed, causing it to go flying across the road and then hitting it again, appearing to trap its head under the car. Such unnecessary brutality. The calf has apparently been moved to a nearby farm, has been named ‘Beau’ and is receiving treatment for an injured leg |

Rubbish. The officers only needed to stop anyone in the area of the animal getting close. They clear wandering animals from public places dozens of times every year by using 10 / 15 officers to gently corral until a transport or a tranquiliser could have been used. What they did is unforgiveable.

Well, as I say, easy to say watching YouTube and Policing on a keyboard. If the outcome had been different, with members of the public injured, we'd be hearing a different hue and cry. |

I would of thought a call to another force in a rural area to take advice as opposed to ramming it with a £25k publicity owned police vehicle
Add the trauma to the cow, vet costs etc. |

Couple of cars and a dog handler would of sorted it, get in touch with local farmer to hold the calf in a spare field.
One of my friends has just retired from the police and he's in despair at the recruitment process... and lack of life skills/thinking |

Well yes, if you have time on your side and resources like vans cars, dogs, farmers available. But they had to make an instant decision "what's the best thing to do that protects the public".
As for your friend, he/she has a career's worth of experience. A newly qualified plod on the beat us expected to be an MME fighter, judge, doctor, social worker ...... FFS these are just mid-level educated kids. |

The police do have vans, cars and dogs available? They would have sent extra cars/support within minutes. It was incredibly poor management of the situation and unnecessary brutality. |

The police just seem to shine at every possible opportunity.
An idiot would have worked out a better strategy than running over the calf. Seems in this case there was more intelligence in the cow than the officers.
Again. Disgusting and incredibly cruel. |

Lived in the county for 25 years and the police before austerity were hardly ever seen, next door neighbour was a copper and according to him about ten years ago they had two response cars to assist local officers in the evenings..
That was before they got rid of the PCSO's in 2021..
The difference between it and the Met was stark.. |

Again this is where common sense comes into it, bit of thinking, no panic and sort the resources out to handle the situation.
Hence why years ago most police were ex forces/prison officers etc fast forward to now a days it's no life skills, as long as they have a degree |

Don't fall for their split second decisions to save lives tosh. If that were true these morons couldn't come up with a solution in a month of committee work.
They're reduced to a gang of whey hey lager lads on tour types. 3-5 years then gone. A bit of fun for your 20s without the risks and boredom of the Army.
I've lost count how many cows I've found on Wiltshire roads. Sure I phone the coppers but I have to tell them to phone the farmer they'd never come up with that for themselves.
Sure enough within 10 minutes the farmer arrives and leads away his valuable source of his living.
All goes well, no coppers. The cow would lead them away. |

“… after which a decision was made”
By whom? A “mid-level educated kid” or someone with “no life skills, as long as they have a degree”? Or a Senior Officer sitting in the control room who’ll be “side-stepped” by being promoted (cf. Cressida Dick)? |

Maybe, just maybe if people hadn’t decided to walk towards the calf, or go outside to film it or see what was going on, the calf wouldn’t have charged a man, and the police wouldn’t have overreacted.
There is more than 1 dimension to most things. |

Maybe. Maybe. Maybe.
No Maybe about it.
It was wrong. Disgustingly and cruelly wrong! Nothing but nothing can excuse this from Surrey Police.
This is what we accept from our police now?
They behaved like animals. |

There is a maybe about it, people getting in the way making things worse, which is the norm today. And you seem to have missed the part that i said the police overreacted?
It shouldn’t have happened |

Totally indefensible.
No witness has said the police were right or that there was a need for them to behave this way. One witness said, 'Why didn't they just corral it into a garden?' Give her the officer's job, she had better ideas than those morons.

I don’t believe anyone is disputing they were wrong in how they chose to deal with it. However, if you watch the video you will see a man walk towards the calf, then be chased by the calf, at that point the police overreacted.
Why was that man allowed anywhere near the calf and what was his intentions, if he had not got involved it may have ended differently. |

Another point where the police failed miserably. Surely it was also their responsibility to control the area and keep the public back and out of the way. The footage I have seen also doesn’t show the calf chasing the man at all, it shows it trotting in a different direction before it got rammed. |

He walked towards it, around a car, the calf turns and chases the man who runs and the calf follows, the police charge in with the car. You can then see the man walk towards the police car that hit the calf.
You are right, they should have cleared the area the calf was in and not let random people approach it.
If you watch the video on the BBC site you will see a bit more of the incident, and there is a full clip somewhere, most reports are showing a shorter version.

Statement from Surrey Police:
“I fully appreciate the distress our handling of this incident has caused and will ensure that it is thoroughly and diligently investigated. In addition to an internal referral to our Professional Standards Department, we have also referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) for independent consideration.
"At this time, the officer who was driving the police car has been removed from frontline duties pending the outcome of these investigations.
"I know there is much concern around the current welfare of the cow. She is now back with her owner and recuperating with her herd. She did sustain a large cut to one leg and cuts and grazes. She continues to be monitored by a vet and our rural officers are staying in contact with the owner for updates.
"I can confirm that on the night, efforts were made to contact local vets without success and efforts were simultaneously being made to identify the owner. Why these were unsuccessful and what more could and should have been done will form a key part of the investigation.
"As well as our overriding duty to protect the public, the welfare of animals is important to us and we know people want answers about how this happened and what led up to it. I am committed to ensuring that we have a full understanding of what took place and why, and we will fully support any investigation. I have also briefed the Home Office on what action we are taking and we are liaising with several animal charities that have been in touch with us about this incident.
"We will continue to provide both our local communities and the wider public with updates as investigations into this matter continue and will also publish these on our website” |

"The police are now claiming that the calf regularly associated with other known cows, and had a history of loitering aggressively in semi rural locations."
It would also say in their report the cow was glassy eyed, unsteady on its feet and appeared to be under the influence of dandelions. |

What would have been the better solution in ending this?
In many cases of loose animals of such size they are usually spent with little regard by armed officers, the calf lived.
The Met hit scooter riders committing crimes with their vehicles sending them sprawling across the roads over and their cars,is that okay or not? |

Like most animals, it's most likely scared .... understandably so! A few soothing words and patience would of been better imho and yes, have worked on farms from a young age and know what a calf is capable of when scared.
Hence years ago you would of had a copper with experience of farm folk and ways ... but unfortunately with no degree so not capable of the job. |

Police cutbacks have not helped. The Chief of Police has got rid of most of the Police Horses or Mounted Branch as it was known. They would have coralled it and possibly been able to use a lasso. Not dissimilar to rodeo tactics but very effctive |

GBAT can be described as a 'Police Sympathiser'. The Police were on the slippery woke route when the Chief of Police renamed them a Police Service rather than a Police Force. The news Film crews at kept away by the English riot squads in case the reporters witness any aggression in the English Police. In Germany the crews are welcome to film and the aggression serves as a warning to these yobs. While British cops cower, the Germans show power. |
