"As an independent?

Yes she could. She is 70 years old. Been an MP for 37 years. Has a big fan club and is viewed as a trail blazer. Had an affair with Jeremy Corbyn.

I hope she stands down and retires. Probably not suited to the current Labour party.

Sadly often people in all walks of life go on too long...

I think she would be an asset to a labour government, one of the few people with real ministerial experience & a recognizable public image. yes she has made a few mistakes in a long career but who has not?

The woman is a rabble rouser, good only for a baiting soundbite. Other than that, she's barley numerate, and not fit to be an MP.

"As an independent?

Absolutely she could!

In fact as a backbencher campaigning on local issues she is one of the better MPs across the house on either side

It’s not the greatest look in the world… I think her plan was to announce she would retire on her own terms.. being forced out whilst welcoming in the likes of elphicke isn’t helping!

So she's been an mp for ever 30 years and dare say quite popular in her area.

I don't agree with a majority of her views BUT her voters Do!

Actually hopes she gives starmer 2 fingers (should be able to count that) run as independent and win.

Isn't that how democracy works?

Yes - Diane Abbott got 70% of the vote in the 2019 General Election when the Tories got an overall majority of 80.

Clearly her constituents think very highly of her, and I suspect she couldn't care a fuck about the disparaging comments people make about her.

But I still think she should retire...

Tom has had hours of amusement watching her gaffs but she has been treated so so bad after years of service. If her local voters like and endorse her then let her stand. Labour are just like the Tories in disguise

Her original comments were crass and insensitive, and she deserves to be thrown out of the party, but I'm not sure actually they were meant to be anti-semitic.

That debacle showed that she's not suitable for public office.

How she ever became an MP is a wonder or testament to politics....

She should go and crawl under a rock and know when to go rather than cling on ...

The labour equivalent of Sunak ...the Tories must be willing her to spew more bile with them so far behind in the poles.

She is as irrelevant as Corbyn is now ..both relevant to a different era ..the Worlds moved on ...

See… this is the problem

You only see them both for example as national figures….. but as local mp’s both of them actually get a hell of a lot done.. and as local mps they are very effective and good at their jobs

Even the bigger detractors in their constituencies will have a hard time conceding the they aren’t good at representing their constituents! There is a big reason why the local parties want to keep them!

There's definitely a 'purge', or at least selective vetting of candidates. It's a moot point whether people vote for a good constituency MP or a broader view of party politics. You can't blame Starmer for making labour electable.

You could blame Labour for moving so close to the Tories to make them electable that they're offing basically nothing new. Just a less self serving version of the same shit.

It's the entire system that doesn't work in my opinion. No party offering any real change will be allowed anywhere near power.

Captain Hindsight says Diane Abbott is "free to go forward as a Labour candidate", after days of much speculation about her political future.

Rabid left-winger Abbott said she had been banned from standing as a Labour candidate - something Starmer denied.

Abbott was suspended as a Labour MP last year after opining that Jewish, Irish and Traveller people do not face racism "all their lives"

Labour bounced into this position?

Labour will win the next GE. I don't think it will be a huge labour increase in votes that secures the win more of a decrease in votes for the tories as the traditional tory voters stay at home.

However, if the left of left continue to make the headlines as they are doing right now, that could persuade a few tory voters off the sofa.

Having seen Diane Abbot on TV recently she really doesn’t look well. Having to be held up by supporters whilst standing on the town steps makes you wonder how fit she would really be to run as a local MP. She has had a good run and I think there is a time and place to let someone else take over but the old guard never seem to want to let go.

yea i noticed that aswell, needed help walking up the steps and seemed to be shaking the whole time, she may well have been good for hackney but mabey time to give younger blood a go, but like u pointed out these politicians seem to want to stay on the gravy train well beyond when they should chuck it in

Amazing how many poster think a few left wing traditional Labour candidates. Are a greater threat to chances of winning, than a 2 faced, u-turning, lying hypocrite of a person for a leader.

Turns out she is standing.

Remember Dan Quayle the less-than-impressive VP to President Bush Sr? When Bush was reported to have an irregular heartbeat, the world shuddered when it was realised Quayle was only a heartbeat away from President. So let's hope Sir Keir's coronary arteries are in good shape eh?

"The thought of "dodgy" Rainer in charge is scary.why's is she "dodgy". And what makes it scary ?"

Here's another unconvincing 'why' and 'what' poster who's here enough to know the concerns

Self-confessed shoplifter

Failed to wait until 16 for sex

Last year, she was forced to defend putting Apple electronics on expenses despite regularly calling out Conservative politicians. When contacted by the Sun, she paid some back.

Forgot she was at Beergate, then it was 'remembered' when a video emerged of her at the contraversial curry do.

Indirectly infers her neighbours are liars. Multiple newspapers have found multiple neighbours who contradict her account of who was living where and when in the Taxgate affair; old tweets show Rayner herself calling the house (that she claims not to have lived in) her home. A time-bar seems to have got her off the hook.

She looks like an uncouth Denise Royle, fag in mouth, regularly spewing profane language at the Tories, rather than a senior member of His Majesty's next Government.

The irony is Captain Hindsight can’t stand her and will be glad to get rid, but it will take time and she will have influence until that point.

That's scary. She's dodgy.

I don't look to presume and I don't believe the person I was asking is a regular here.

For me, someone who has undersge sex and may have shoplifftee once at 16 is dodgy or that them now being part of government is scary. That would make a lot of people dodgy.

Even her other behaviours, while not great, I'd not call dodgy. But maybe that's semantics. They'd also not make me feel her being near power is scary. At least no scarier than any other person standing.

Thays why I was interested in the other person's view. It gives as a spectrum of opinions.

Badly worded. I can't tell if you're agreeing, disagreeing or firmly wedged on that fence again.

'may have' - she has admitted shoplifting! Petty crime is not petty to the shopkeeper, society and other shoppers.

And can you clarify this nonsense : "For me, someone who has undersge sex and may have shoplifftee once at 16 is dodgy or that them now being part of government is scary"

Do you approve of under-age sex?

Do you approve of theft?

Can you for once be clear? This is the office of Deputy Prime Minister she's got her eyes on.

Capt Hindsight wants a clampdown on shoplifters if he gains power. It was all over the news last week, just as Rayner was admitting to her shoplifting past! Priceless timing! But do you support Flip Flop or Angrier for being candid?

She casually mentions shoplifting thinking it sounds cool to a lot of 16 year olds! They can come straight out of the Spar at 9pm with pilfered proceeds..... then proceed to the polling station.

Scary and dodgy.

i don't approve of undeagw sex. Nor shoplifting.

However I also accept that kids make mistakes and that this doesn't make the adult they turn into dodgy, nor makes it scary for them to be in office.

If that's the bar then hardly any of us could represent the people.

There are elements of her that could be called out for hypocrisy. That may be a reason not to vote for her, but not the hyperbole. My opinion anyway.

Hypocrisy and contradiction of views gets my goat. And she has done this.

But it would be equally hypocritical to call her dodgy and scary for doing things we don't approve of, and show any support for MPs of other colours who have done similar or worse.

Or not call everyone who has had sex under 16 or shoplifted dodgy.

Of course I don't know your views on this. Nor the fella who used the terms in the first place. But was looking to understand their views. As mine, even tho I'm not pro Raynor, or even labour tbh, are she isn't dodgy (for those reasons) nor are those reasons to be scared to have her near power.

the trouble with our MOs ATM is this is the best we have.

But I'd not say she's horrid or it's scary to have her near power. Not based on your points.

I understand you do. I hear the emotion. I hear similar emotion against Tories.

But imo your points get undermined when you bring in teen pregnancy and then crossing the legs against her. Just an opinion.

And she didn't use time barred, even if that was why she didn't get charged. Odd wording imo.

But do you support Flip Flop or Angrier for being candid? i don't approve of undeagw sex.

So having 'turned into an adult' she simply refines her nefarious activities to dodgy expense claims, only paying them back when the Sun unearths them. It's a mindset with this woman - I want what you have and I'm going to get it. I'll scream Tory scum if you try to stop me. If the Press gets a sniff, only then will I admit anything, pay anything back, admit I was at Currygate, but if I can get away with it, I will. I'll use time-barred statutes if necessary! I'll let you think my 83 year old neighbour is a nasty Tory liar. I'll use every trick in the book if necessary, I'll even cross my legs in front of the Prime Minister if it puts him off.

You're happy with this as Deputy Prime Minister?

the trouble with our MOs ATM is this is the best we have.

"

On the fence again! You don't dispute any of the sleaze she's mired in, the wrongdoing she's got up to, you just seem to excuse it on age grounds or that it's the best we can do in current times! Are you or are you not happy with Rayner becoming Deputy Prime minister?

Yesterday, she was jumping out of her bus, like a nightclub singer in trainers, going full on Kumbaya about the 'no nuclear deterrent' world she dreams of, whilst Flip Flop was to his credit committed to it (for now) surrounded by Veterans.. she is one scary, dodgy loose cannon I tell you!

Wow! Only a couple of days ago posters were claiming she couldn't stand up, needed help walking up stairs and was shaking rather than dancing...

Or has this thread morphed into irrelevant ramblings about someone else?

I think it's fascinating. You can usually guess where some posters get their "news" from.

The thread has simply raised another Labour MP's activities, as can happen here. Only a few days ago, have you forgotten that on the Braverman thread, you sashayed from Suella to Sunak in one short sentence. It happens. I didn't accuse you of 'rambling'.

"The thought of "dodgy" Rainer in charge is scary.why's is she "dodgy". And what makes it scary ?

Here's another unconvincing 'why' and 'what' poster who's here enough to know the concerns

I'm not on the fence. I simply am comfortable with nuance.

I condone shoplifting. But wouldn't go as far as saying shoplifting as a kid makes you a scary choice to hold a position or office in government.

I hold a similar view on the use of cocaine, affairs, other matters, even if they happened more recently and not when still deemed a child.

I don't have strong views on her as a person to say happy or not. I don't think it's scary for her to be Deputy PM. I'd not be celebrating her being deputy PM.

Same as the current deputy.

Indeed I would have probably had the same view of Raab, albeit it was right he was removed on light of bullying allegations.

Not everything needs outrage. I'd save that for where I feel it's deserved otherwise it loses impact. This doesn't warrant such intense language in my view.

Abbot has a dodgy past that seems to have been conveniently forgotten. Her and Corbin were very matey with the East German regime during the Cold War and then she and him get elected to Parliament. Hmmm?

Not true. My post said that BOTH Suella and Sunak tried unsuccessfully to get The Met to change its policing methods specifically for the Pro-Palestine marches. Perfectly in context for that thread which was about Braverman being humilated by a bunch of students.

I love running rings around you. Next

I said I didn't think Abbott was fit for public office. I don't think Rayner is either. In context.
