It's been the same all the way through with those at the top of the organisation who sent innocent people to jail and ruined hundreds of lives for something that they knew was not the case..
And they covered it up from the start and now they're protecting their own arses, 'sorry' doesn't cut it..
The I don't remember or the I didn't know what my highly paid role was and am incompetent isn't good enough..
I hope if the government don't prosecute them then the campaign group dies take out private prosecutions..

Today I met a woman who used to work in a post office in Ascot years ago when all the books were on paper and they used ink pads and rubber stamps.
It made me wonder. If she had been born a lot later, and had been in charge in that post office, could she have become a victim of this scandal?
Meanwhile, I have heard of someone else who actually did steal cash from a post office till, and ended up getting done for it.
So in at least one case, dishonest staff did exist. |

Unfortunately, our establishment is packed with incompetent and useless blaggers just like this person and they only get our attention when a scandal is publicised. In the main, thousands and thousands of people inhabit the higher echelons of our society not because of how good and how capable they are, but because of who they know.
We actually do need a revolution in this country and we all need to stop nodding along and obediently accepting nepotism and ‘the old boys club’ way that our society is run. It’s not as if it is the first time that we have been shocked by the behaviour of people with high levels of responsibility being humiliated in a public enquiry… they should not have ever been in those positions in the first place. |

Maybe. A comment piece recently said, there are two classes in this country. There are people who get prosecuted, and people who get directorships.
Is the private school system to blame? I looked to see where Vennels went to school and sure enough -- "in her early years, Vennells, from Denton, Lancashire, studied at the private all-girls school, Manchester High School for Girls" (Daily Mirror) |

I wondered if it is like how security holes get in computer programs.
Developers naturally aren't inclined to think of abuse of their pride and joy.
In the same way, maybe the top Post Office people could not think of how the job they loved could be doing harm.
They seemed to have got attached to an article of faith: Horizon has no errors.
That's a long way from the poster on the wall of the maths teacher I remember at school. It said,
"To err is human. To really foul things up requires a computer". |

Having worked in some very associated projects (not Horizon), with very associated companies (and people), in very associated environments...
None of this, from a company, programme or technological angle, is surprising.
What is surprising is the level of cover up and that they doubled down with prosecutions. |

Kickbacks, favours and threats were commonly referred to or observed from individuals (personally encountered) who were in the same environment at that time and were tangentially involved. The culture was awful.
Caveat: no direct experience with Horizon. |

The chair has said that the inquiry will not sit on election day or the day following. Beyond that, it's going to continue regardless. Anyone can access it over youtube. I have the election running in one window and Horizon Inquiry running in another.
They won't, in my view, get in the way of each other, for those interested. |

Aside from the very obvious extrinsic motivations, it’s very easy for people to justify increasing levels of poor behaviour once they have started along that path. The little cover up makes the slightly bigger cover up easier to justify, then all of a sudden it’s this. Then the fear of all the other things being discovered drives further attempts to avoid blame.
It’s pretty simple psychology and it’s something we are all susceptible to, although generally not on this scale! |

Fraud and conspiracy are the most likely avenues. The Fraud side is simply changing the content of documents. Which seems already to have been proved. People also can collude to deceive, (and pervert the course of justice) and I think that they are already deep into that trail with Vennells et-al.
No one will be charged until the Inquiry concludes. However.
I think. Yes. Absolutely, there will be charges. Prison time? Hmmmm! The court is still out on that one.

I hope that some are sent to prison for this totally evil bastards but I very much doubt it and the post masters who did not go to prison have been offered a derisory 75k compensation, hardly covers what some of them paid out of their own pockets should be at least a million each, in the meantime legal profession continues to make vast fortunes over it. |
