Congrats to Sadiq. We probably have a different definition of 'well deserved' mind

We did the new Gipton and Harehills Councillor say it was a win for Gaza. What the fuck can a local Councillor do?

"A well deserved third term.

Putting Starmer in his place over Ulez expansion

Starmer told khan to reflect on Ulez on 21 July 2023

On 28 July 2023 judge (Mr Justice Swift) found that the legal basis on which the Mayor made the decision to expand the ULEZ was sound, and in line with previous decisions on the ULEZ and the Congestion Charge, and that the ULEZ could legally apply to all roads within the expanded zone

In October 2023 Starmer refused to say if Ulez expansion was right

In March 2024 Starmer praised khan over Ulez.

Darn those knife attackers also breathe the clean air. Luckily most of them are smokers. But even that advantage won't last long because the Tories have set the stage for smoking ban.

No more moaning about the state of London.

Being charged to drive, poor public transport, high taxes, high crime.

Everyone who lives there has brought it on themselves. Either by voting for Khan or by not voting.

Taxes no higher than anywhere else in England. ULEZ introduced by Boris and extension under Khan encouraged by Tory govt. Air quality has improved. Crime is lower than Manchester ("Manchester has a notably higher-than-average crime rate when compared to most other UK cities. The areas to really avoid are Moss Side and Rusholme" - btw I have lived in both Moss Side and Rusholme and they are pretty safe).

Not sure what your beef is with London or Khan, but I love London and voted for Khan.

Worse case scenario was for Sadiq Khan to have another 4 years in City Hall. So it means more LTNs on London roads, More 20 mph roads where its not necessary (except for residential areas around schools, hospitals and places of worship where I support 20 mph roads), higher council taxes, more deaths on London streets in particular with teenagers, more public transport strikes, will be charged to use the Blackwall and silvertown tunnels and best of them all is there will be a Pay per mile system despite him saying he wont introduce it but he will find a way to bring it in with an excuse as always. So thank you to everyone who voted for this

Actually, ULEZ was introduced by Khan. It was Boris idea but he left office before it was implemented.

Traffic congestion has actually gotten WORSE since the expansion of ULEZ due to mismanagement of the roads.

And the Mayoral charge on council tax has increased by close to 9% in the past year. Partly due to the increasing number of Khans court (including the useless Amy Lane) pocketing large salaries.

I actually think it would be better for Londoners to do away with the mayors office altogether.

From 230 miles away it is interesting to see Mr Khan voted in for a third term given his (well meaning clean air) war on the London motorist. Particularly low budget motorists

Mayors are not solely responsible for the levels of crime in their area. People rightly did not blame Andy Street for the West Midlands having the worst rate of knife crime per capita in the country. Nor should Khan take the fall for trends which he isn't entirely responsible for. Crime does not exist in a local bubble, there are factors far beyond the remit of local mayors (or PCCs) actually have. The way we've devised devolution in this country is absolutely remarkable really, it will be studied in the future by people asking 'how did that happen?'

Congratulations to Sadiq Khan. However, I don't think he deserved a third term. He should use it much more wisely and dial down on hostility to the motorist.

I also disliked intensely that claim he put on his website that a picture of a young white family “does not represent real Londoners”.

All Londoners are real Londoners, no matter their ethnicity, and Khan needs to stop these desperate, politically-motivated attempts to divide people.

And only very recently, Khan had to contact the Chief Rabbi to apologise for comments he made during a discussion about Islamophobia.

He needs to be bringing people together far more over the next 4 years.

I agree with the sentiment there's too much ID politics and division. I'm just not sure that any party is doing the electorate justice here.

It's just a bit shit that a guy who only about 20% of people think is doing a good job has just walked back into a powerful and influential job because the other political party simply didn't want it and put forward a lame duck candidate.

Sucks how much disdain Londoners are treated with, if this was a New York Mayoral election they wouldn't have to put up with such crap options.

We got political candidates, not mayoral candidates. Neither of the candidates had a plan for the future of London or cared for its past. It's not the mayor of London who runs London, it's property developers and they are doing a terrible job of making the city livable. They are also destroying the very heritage of the place that makes it attractive. Once that is gone, London will loose its visual and cultural appeal and will become another Brasília (the failed capital, not the country). None of the candidates wanted to discuss it, they prefer nasty politics to distract and divide us.

Salty tears bingo:

- Low Turnout

- Unfounded claims of postal voter fraud

- "the Muslims voted for him"

Those who vote Conservative are more likely to go out and vote. There was an average swing of 5% from Tory to Labour in most areas.

There has been little to no evidence of postal vote fraud. Many right wing social media bots tried to sow the seed of a rigged election by claiming Susan Hall was close to winning before the count even started.

These bots also claim that the Muslim vote in Tower Hamlets helped Khan win which is rubbish because they don't support him.

The majority of the electorate doesn't spend their life on Twitter/Facebook/Nextdoor being fed lies by bots, people forget that.

Politicians of all parties need to stop these divisive comments. I've never forgotten Diane Abbott in an interview on This Week saying "West Indian mums will go to the wall for their children” when trying to justify her reason for sending her son to a private school. Andrew Neil asked her "So black mums love their kids more than white mums, do they?” He suggested that Ms Abbott’s remark was racist.

"We got political candidates, not mayoral candidates. None of the candidates wanted to discuss it, they prefer nasty politics to distract and divide us."

Susan Hall's entire campaign was attacking Sadiq Khan.

Sadiq Khan had an actual mandate.

"They're all the same" doesn't apply here.

"Worse case scenario was for Sadiq Khan to have another 4 years in City Hall.

Thank you to everyone who didn’t vote for Susan hall who said once Black people have a ‘problem with crime’.”

No. And neither did taxi drivers after she suggested they were racists.

In a message on Twitter, Abbott wrote: “Dubious of black people claiming they’ve never experienced racism. Ever tried hailing a taxi I always wonder?”

Steve McNamara, of the Licensed Taxi Drivers Association, described the comment as “at worst, racist and at best, stupid”.

She does it frequently. You can't just blame the other person /group all the time to excuse her vile, divisive politics.

Congratulations to Sadiq Khan on becoming London Mayor for the 3rd time.As I said on the London forum about the London Mayor Election I believe he is a stronger candidate than Susan Hall and proved it by getting 275,000 votes more than her.

. Whilst I may not be happy with his record I was not convinced about Susan Hall.If Susan Hall had got in would she have scrapped ULEZ I doubt it.Would knife crime go down only if there was more police on the streets and youth clubs for the younger generation to go to but that would mean the government would have to provide more money for police officer. It would have been interesting if Boris Johnson had stood as a independent or if he was allowed to be the Conservative candidate.

"No more moaning about the state of London.

The way we've devised devolution in this country is absolutely remarkable really, it will be studied in the future by people asking 'how did that happen?'"

Yeah but most don't think being their own rhetoric, don't want to because it may upset their ideas, ideologies and preferences. They just want an argument.

They'd have to think afterall.

It’s got nothing to do with Khan political policies, he got re-elected. It’s due to the fact 70% of London are not born in the UK. Which is the reason the Labour Party wanted Khan as the Labour London Mayor. Khan brown face is appealing the majority not the minority.

Whether you are born in London or not is irrelevant to how you vote. However, I wonder if you were trying to channel your inner BNP or NF, in which case the stats show majority of those living in London are still white.

London's ethnic composition from the census in 2021:

White: 53.8% White British: 36.8%

Minor ethnic

Asian British: 20.8%

Black British: 13.5%

Mixed: 5.7%

Other: 6.3%

"I love the robust and accurate nature of surveys/polls taken down the pub. We should do more! "

I met a bloke down the pub once, and he sort of, you know, possibly hinted, that, maybe, well, if Khan were to change his policy, he was not sure which one, but surely one could be changed, but on the other hand, if he were to keep his policy (the same one that he might change - whichever one that was), then that might be different, and he was not sure if he liked him or would support him, but he was rather conflicted, and his wife's sister's mother-in-law told him that really Khan was not such a great leader, and consequently he should canvas some other opinions, so while he was out walking his dog he got involved in a conversation with a bloke who was going to the same pub as him (where I met him), and that bloke didn't think Khan should be under house arrest in Pakistan, and that he was a great cricket player, and they should let him out so he could resume being London Mayor - oh and what was the question again?

It would suggest that you're leaning more away from the centre or the left, politically speaking.

If Khan is that crap how come he’s won a third term with 275,828 more votes than his main rival, Tory candidate Susan Hall.

ALL politicians bribe the electorate with promises of something some of them want! Tax cuts. Tighter immigration rules. Nationalisation. Privatisation. Banning this or unbanning that. Etc etc

With the turnout for the London Mayor election been 40.5 % do some think that could be a reason why Sadiq Khan won by over 275,000 votes.Should there perhaps be some sort of fine if you don’t vote.Would the 59.5% who didn’t vote have made the difference for a Conservative win or closer contest

The mediocrity of other candidates does not prove his strength. Similarly, Labour will win the next GE, but only because the Conservatives self-combusted. That doesn't make Labour especially good.

Always find it interesting how one bloke can get blamed for all London's knife crime.

Seems to me people are not looking hard enough at the real reasons & simply happy to point a finger and wag it at a scap goat.

Well so far nobodys articulated why they voted for Sadiq Khan othen than there were no better canditates despite his record so far on running London, most people voted out of party loyalty if anything. If this was somewhere else with his record he would of been fired already. All Im saying is you guys better hope he doesnt bring any form of pay per mile system because thats when people will really get pissed off

Boris Johnson was re-elected with a 38% turnout. Still makes the result valid. Second and third term election turnouts are lower it seems.

Australia has compulsory voting I believe. Seems the nutters still manage to win.

Susan Hall is a dud. Extremely poor calibre candidate. Khan has been held back by hostile Tory governments. Londoners aren't fools hence his third term....

What's wrong with pay per mile exactly? To some extent fuel duty is exactly that.

Where there is viable public transport and infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, high traffic density should be discouraged. Pay per mile could be an effective tool if implemented properly with plenty of exemptions, well chosen time slots etc.

It will come eventually.

. I had no idea Boris won with a 38% turnout to me anything less than 70% turnout and I start to wonder what could have happened if those that didn’t vote did. I agree that Sadiq hands have at times been tied as he has had a Conservative government to deal with. If what is been said in the news and polls that we are looking at a Labour government at the next election then hopefully we will have a better London. As I have said before I voted Sadiq because I believe he is a better candidate than Susan Hall

But that is true for any party. Boris Johnson won the GE in 2019 with an 80 seat majority but the overall Conservative share of the vote didn't increase over 2017. They won because Labour had Jeremy Corbyn as leader.

As we found out that didn't make the Tories especially good (your words) and once even they saw through Johnson, they (not us) elected pancake face who blew up the economy in days....

Voting for one candidate because the other is absolutely awful is a damn legit reason to vote for them. Susan Hall had no policy, her campaign was simply rants about Sadiq Khan. You could say the only reason she gave was "I'm not Sadiq!".

I'm not against pay per mile. It's actually fairer than a flat rate congestion charge.

Too many people hop into their cars for journeys less than a mile. We live in a congested city. There is traffic build up in greater London in Zones 4 and 5.

We've gone through this sooo many times LOL.

LTNs are local policy not set out by the Mayor. LTNs aren't a toll, they cost nothing to drive in. Do we need to repeat this to you another 100 times?

Most vehicles in London are ULEZ compliant. ULEZ isn't a toll.

If pay per mile was to come into place it would replace congestion charge. Like I said it would be fairer than congestion charge.

Most "cash strapped" families do not own a vehicle.

ULEZ is a toll, it is a toll to allow non compliant vehicles pollute the air.

Not being a London resident I don’t think I can say whether Khan is good or bad for Londoners in general terms.

As for ULEZ the Tory party wanted it expanded to the North and South circular and Khan extended it to the whole of London. The people with far better knowledge than me will have to decide which is a better or fairer outcome but both Tory and Labour wanted it implementing in principal. So equally to blame or praise. A gentler pricing implementation could have lessened the financial impact for those affected. .

khan strikes me as a far better candidate than Susan Hall He’s the grown up in the room every time.

The acceptance of that disgusting Dover MP into the Labour fold means they certainly don’t always get it right.

Andy Burnham is an example of a good mayor. A centre leaning socialist who will happily praise an opposition policy if it’s the right policy.

My own view is local politics should all be independents as national policy never fits to all our hugely diverse local needs.

"

How would a pay per mile scheme be fairer? The brunt of it would be borne by essential blue collar workers such as builders, couriers and carers. The people who would suffer the most would be those least able to afford it and the very rich wouldn't be affected at all

The only justification for some sort of pay per mile would be if it was inclusive of road tax and insurance with some sort of allowance for those whose employment NEEDS a vehicle.

___

Also, if as stated, the overwhelming majority of vehicles are already ULEZ compliant it renders the scheme ineffective as a tiny minority of higher polluting vehicles would have negligible effect on air quality.

The scheme therefore punishes people such as lower income and elderly.

Finally, despite the Draconian ULEZ zone congestion (and therefore pollution) has gotten worse. Mainly due to mismanagement of traffic systems and infrastructure.

The opinion polls prior to the election clearly showed around 75% of voters dissatisfied with Khan or that he wasn't doing a good job.

There's a number of reasons why people still voted for him but it generally comes down to a number of people feel that they HAVE TO vote and a lot of people only think in terms of political parties, of which there's really only two to choose from.

In many ways I would of liked to see an Independent candidate win as they would then be free from ties to political party/government.

"Thing is Sadiq Khan isnt Andy Burnham, had Andy Burnham been selected as London Mayor I would of voted for him as I know he has a good record running Manchester although not perfect himself. You cant defend a record like Khans over 8 years which has been poor for the most of it and say his the better then the others. He had his chance and been a failure but unfortunately we gonna have more failure for 4 more under Khan Mayoralty

But you don't even know what the mayor is responsible for"

His also the police and crime comissioner which beggers belive
