Great Dunmow

How the hell can the Home Secretary makes such "jokes" regarding his wife? I've been a victim of such things and been out for the count for a long time. Might pop along the A120 to Braintree to explain that no laughing matter.

------------

Cleverly told female guests at the reception that “a little bit of Rohyp _ _ _ in her drink every night” was “not really illegal if it’s only a little bit”, the Sunday Mirror reported.

He also laughed that the secret to a long marriage was ensuring your spouse was “someone who is always mildly sedated so she can never realise there are better men out there”.

Ah sorry. I've been busy and hadn't seen. Oh yes the greatest get out ever "it's a joke" or "just banter". Fortunately I did not experience the r word but was out for a long time and at the time thought I was lucky to wake up and thinking absolutely anything could have happened. In the end i was "just" minus a Cartier watch and my wallet. I can't believe any sensible person would make such a joke never mind the Home Secretary. Well I guess the thread you mention enables some people to add to their block list.

Yep, very and tbf as if the jokes weren't abhorrent enough, the fact that it was coming from a man who is in a position of power and responsible for creating white papers on matters such as these which are meant to support the protection of people's rights was a bigger issue...what kind of message does it send to victims of r@pe and sexual assault?

I'm a bit annoyed it reached the politics section because people then turned it into whataboutery rather than engaging with the actual question. The OP I drafted had no party political angle. It wasn't a politics piece in my mind, but there we are!

Vile and awful, and if other people (but men especially) wish to be meaningful and useful allies in the fight against deep-rooted patriarchal misogyny, then it needs calling out. Embarrassed silence does not befit a transgression of such contempt and harm.

How is it double standards? The audience is made up of people who want to be there, who already have an understanding of the comedians comedic repertoire so they pay to be there.

Time, place, context springs to mind.

True, but I meant by the standards of what is socially acceptable. YT is packed with vids of Jimmy Carr, Frankie Boyle, Chubby Brown et al making crass gags. Then we are outraged when a politician says something similar.

It's not whether or not someone is allowed a sense of humour, it's about the appropriateness of the joke... r*pe jokes are not funny and highly inappropriate whether it's "comedian " or a politician making the " joke"... bit then again people who have never been r*aped are the ones who say " it's just a joke" ... ...not fucking funny and its insulting to victims

I guess there are lots of nuances to it.

As a joke itself, I don't find anything wrong with it. If you can't handle dark humour, you obviously won't like it. I am personally fine with anything being a topic of a joke, as long as its just a joke. Ricky Gervais and Jimmy Carr have both spoken a lot about how making a joke about a bad thing doesn't have to be a bad thing.

What complicates this matter is the fact that he is a politician and it was said in a party in No.10. I don't mind the fact that he is a politician as they are humans at the end of the day and they should be able to make jokes others can. My problem is the environment where he made the joke.

These kind of jokes will usually result in a meeting with HR in any professional environment and for the right reason. So if the party was with colleagues and he was there to play a professional role, the backlash is totally warranted.

You refer to authoritarianism and yet presumably prefer to live in a decent society, where we have enforced standards, including prevention of harm to others. Some respect and rules help to sustain decency and well-being, even if that might be construed as authoritarianism. In his position, he should be beyond reproach, especially upon matters of legality and having a watertight moral compass. I think his boss had also insisted on having a government that was going to be in that style. Charlatans and stomach churningly sickening are what immediately come to mind, when such abhorrent behaviour isn't met with immediate sacking.

If you read the joke fully, he basically said that spiking her drink regularly was the only way to keep her from realising that there are better men out there. I don't think there is anything bad from the wife's perspective. It was self deprecatory humour. The only problem is the topic of joke wasn't probably the right thing in a professional environment.

What has Tom admitted which is so awful?

I'm not going to spell out the TRUE words spoken by Mr. Cleverly but, any mention of particular 'drugs' or the forceful violation of his Lady wife were absolutely the product of some sick and twisted mind(s).

Just shows how stupid rumours and negative assumptions begin.

Some people really ought to study the basics of critical thinking, unless of course, the 'agenda' suits their purpose.

In defending him, you are tacitly supporting a man who:

1. Believes a joke about use of a date-R drug is ok

2. Has highly offended leading CEO's and members of charity organisations who support individuals who have experienced use of the drug upon them

3. Even the Shadow Minister for domestic violence and safeguarding stated, "“‘It was a joke’ is the most tired excuse in the book and no one is buying it. If the home secretary is serious about tackling spiking, and violence against women and girls, then that requires a full cultural change. The ‘banter’ needs to stop and it has to start at the top.”

I would like to think those reasons alone, let alone the thousands of other reasons from other women/men/individuals who have suffered abuse from the date-R drug would be enough to shine a light on the feeling towards his comments.

.

His comments were unkind, not nice, insensitive and trivialised a drug used to harm others. There is no "good" in that. Absolutely none at all..

I totally get why people are outraged, especially if they have been affected.

My take is the butt of the joke is meant to be himself. He's trying to say he's punching.

The way he has made himself the butt is of poor taste, especially given his role in government. Some jokes are more odd limit to some people.

But I dont see he's necessarily making light of it. Indeed he probably felt the humour came from the dark side of this, the shock value, which only works because it's an awful thing to do.

But I have a dark sense of humour. Maybe I'm trying to defend my ego.

Considering that the government were apparently prioritising this spiking activity, for being viewed as the abhorrent tool that it is, his behaviour shows utter contempt for victims, the law and common decency.

The fact that he, nor Sunak, have got rid, emphasises that they are morally bankrupt and unfit to be there or in public office

I suppose it depends what standards we hold our leaders to.

I wouldn't have anyone on my team making 'jokes' like this, especially not in a leadership position.

I'd lose respect for someone if they said something like this. Once that goes so does he trust. No leader is effective without respect and trust.

He said she is genuinely just thick as two planks and not possible to engage in any kind of reasoned debate that would be normal in most private companies at senior management level. "

Oh !

"It's about votes too and although one of two faux voters will vote for another party it will attract others who see the humanity in the politician.

He got 67% in Braintree last time so barring a clusterfuck of beyond even Liz Truss proportions he will get another go. He could stand around Braintree town centre naked with an erection doing an old Jim Davidson stag night routine and probably increase his vote. Saying that I'd be willing to have a wager that it will go down next time despite showing his "humanity". If you think it will attract voters should be easy money for you.

"Not that many years ago Bob Monkhouse used to begin almost every joke with the words "My wife...".

Perhaps those were Cleverly's formative years?"

The years when Jimmy Savile and Rolf Harris were popular celebrities.

You seem to be mistaking advice with opinion. Guess you are not that confident in yours. How high do you think the 67% will go will all these new voters attracted to his comedic humanity?

This incident aside, the man's an incompetent oaf. A sad reflection of the vast majority of government and, I have no doubt but no evidence, of the rest of the majority of parliament

The tory party has had a right-wing coup and, since Johnson's purge of the more centrist MP's, what we have been left with is a cabal of third-raters, such as fugly Jimmy Thicko.

"Joke: a thing that someone says to cause amusement or laughter, especially a story with a funny punchline."

Presumably he thinks he said it to cause amusement. However it didn't have a funny punchline.

We clearly need a Ministry of Humour so the government can guide us on what is funny and what isn't. This will avoid the confusion evident in this thread.

On a side note they are saying that Mr Cleverly is taking credit that the bogus asylum seekers did not cross on Christmas Day. Even illegal asylum seekers take a day off to enjoy Christmas day with their families. It was a bit strange for the minister to take any credit for this

So that is both in Parliament and on radio that Cleverly lies about when he called Stockton a shit hole at PMQs
