We were just sitting in bed reading this.

I genuinely can't think of anything to say, it so far beyond belief that he would consider this funny or even if he does go be so unaware of his audience that he thought it was ok to say it out loud. He's not Jimmy Carr

It was at a No.10 reception, hardly the pub. It's not something I believe Government ministers should be joking about on company time. We don't know what his true beliefs are, he does himself zero favours by making such "jokes".

Apparently it was 'ironic'. Making that sort of 'ironic' joke on the same day the government announced new measures against spiking shows breathtaking lack of awareness on his part. We seem to have a very poor track record where home secretaries are concerned.

I know, this is true. As I said in my reply to KC.

But I'm also a civil servant and regularly make pretty inappropriate "jokes" in the office, as most of my colleagues do. We giggle 'cos its gets us through the day. But, by god, if someone captured me on camera, I'd probably be pilloried too x

Jokes (black or otherwise) can be pitched (in) appropriately to our friends or even work colleagues. But this was neither a case of friends or work colleagues. It was some kind of professional event that included journalists. It's astonishing that he has such a lack of awareness to make so-called jokes in such company.

And if a boxer punches someone in the face in front of a few thousand people, it’s acceptable. People have different jobs and are rightly held to standards that reflect those jobs. It’s a comedian’s job to tell jokes, I wouldn’t find a joke about r*pe funny but I accept that there is a market out there for comedians who make r*pe jokes. The Home Secretary is an entirely different matter.

"You can’t say anything anymore

It's called not mocking things people have experienced...

I see jokes about stuff I've experienced. I still laugh. You need a little dark humour at times.

I hear this. But I think it’s like for me, I laugh at dark racist jokes, when they’re made by Black People. But also I accept and acknowledge that those jokes are generally offensive and will offend people. I think belonging to the group that’s impacted does help the joke land though. There’s a weird power thing here that I think makes this particular type of joke from the OP, not funny but particularly unfunny coming from a man"

Again for me it’s about knowing your audience. My white friends can make race jokes and I find it funny but they wouldn’t dream of saying it to other people.

Freud said there was always a bit of truth in humour.

And if you believe that, where people land on this is somewhat revealing.

Punching down from a place of power - never funny.

Inviting people to share your lived experience through comedy - can be incredible. We saw Dara O'Briain live and his bit about being adopted had me crying and laughing.

So you think when people make jokes it's a representation of their professional ability to do a good job.? Yes I suppose we should have a policy that everyone in any profession is not permitted to attempt humour unless it's a direct copy of all of their professional activities.

It shows that the person lacks the ability to moderate their behaviour appropriately. It’s also quite disturbing that the man responsible for law and order in this country thinks r+pe jokes are funny, especially when it’s so incredibly difficult to secure a r*pe conviction in the UK.

Let’s just take for a second that even in the best setting, it’s not exactly a great joke

Then let’s look at this

“ He also laughed that the secret to a long marriage was ensuring your spouse was “someone who is always mildly sedated so she can never realise there are better men out there”.

Is that his attempt at self deprecating joke? Punching down? “Aren’t husbands such losers we need to drug our wives” kinda ruins the punching down/self deprecating aspect wheb the punchline is spiking a woman

Any joke can be funny, this just really wasn’t, and that’s before we even look at who he is, what he’s mean to represent and who he’s meant to be standing for

Still people are getting away with sexist jokes, yet if it was a racist joke there would be uproar.

Oh agree with that... Or trans.. Or well any other ism...its not a funny "joke" but the faux outrage says more about those stirring things up than about his abilities it failings as a politician.

Politician makes crap joke. The end.

"

Actually no, that's not what I'm saying.

It's not just a crap joke. And it's not false outrage. It's genuine concern for wanting to live in a more compassionate society.

Sexist 'jokes' and all these kind of abusive 'jokes' are still deemed acceptable, by some, to keep people in their place.

I sometimes feel like sexist 'jokes' are deemed more acceptable in society than racist, or homophobic 'jokes'...bit that's just my feelings. Maybe because I feel the impact more than other 'jokes'?

Reading that is difficult for me, i empathise, I realy do, I understand why you might get upset by that joke?

It's not just the joke I find offensive but the trivialisation of it that I find equally as abhorrent

It's unsettling when jokes of that nature are being made by those responsible for creating policies and legislations meant to support the protection of people along with victims of such crimes. This is the issue for me

So you think when people make jokes it's a representation of their professional ability to do a good job.? Yes I suppose we should have a policy that everyone in any profession is not permitted to attempt humour unless it's a direct copy of all of their professional activities.

I never said that.

And was Cleverly off the clock in an official function at No.10? I'd suggest not. We are often involved in "social" functions at work but we are definitely "on the clock" because the function is designed to hob-nob with external stakeholders etc. We would be expected to behave in the same way as if we were in the college.

The event was:

".....on 18 December, when political journalists were invited to a drinks reception in 10 Downing Street along with political aides, ministers and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak."

I'd suggest that an event where political journalists are invited (i.e. not colleagues or friends) is a work function and therefore one would be expected to behave professionally.

But we all know how professional things are in No.10. About as professional as most of the professionals on here who can allegedly breathe through their ears, etc.
