"Well I'm astounded by the silence of the left on this issue. I mean I'm sure it's nothing to do with the labour run council but it would be interesting to at least hear from them"
Are we going to discuss other bankrupt councils as well, then? |

In trying to get my heads around the facts here.
The bulk comes from a equal pay case from 2010. Labour lost control on 2004 and refined in 2012.
But I'm not sure if the claim relates to pay pre 2004 or not.
What is your understanding, OP? |

They're not bankrupt as such, more effectively bankrupt and yes, why not discuss others, if you know of any currently |

Why specifically do you want to hear from "the left"? |

The real issue is what the money we all pay in tax is funding. Though asking questions like that is too on the mark and as such people need to stick to arguing over which sockpuppet is to be blamed for the mess. |

Precisely."
As I've not had a reply from OP and you tend to do research...

From what I understand on the BBC the equal pay dispute forms a lot of the problem but they are saying its since then and dragging out payments that has caused a lot of pain. Coupled with an IT system that could end up costing 100 million pounds has not helped |

Hosting the Commonwealth games has not helped.
Alot of unnecessary projects and wasted money to host the games
Birmingham has always been run badly and it will just get much worse now.
Alot of the highest paid will need to get sacked for allowing this to happen
Going to be alot of cuts to essential services and the effects of this will last for many years and will lead to more deaths.
Birmingham is a shit hole. |

I didn't know we had the Home Secretary on here.
Generally these councils that are struggling will be labour run as areas of higher need generally vote labour.
That is changing and there are exceptions but that is generally the case.
Now why that is, is a different matter.
The areas of highest need have been hit harder by austerity and an explosion of need in adult and children's social care. This coincidentally has taken place under conservative government.
Go to your local council website, have a look at where the money is spent. I am happy to bet (apart from maybe Kent)most is spent on services for the most vulnerable adults and children.

I see councils going pop all over the place. Northants down the road went under and they are Tory I believe.
Only difference is one will waste money on projects like de-colonising their flowerbeds and hurty feelings story time and the other will just give the money away on huge vanity projects or just straight to their friends. |

research suggested the Birmingham Commonwealth Games generated a net profit of £100m – a “narrow economic margin” considering it cost £778m, still a profit also the jobs that it generated the tourists that came to Birmingham.
Just saying |

Since 1988 12 Local authorities have issued section 114 notices.
Northamptonshire Council twice in 2018
Croydon Council in 2020 and 2022
Nottinghamshire Council in 2021 and 2023
Birmingham is not new to this list and I’m sure there are plenty more LA’s close to issuing a section 114 notice.
Local authorities in the United Kingdom cannot go bankrupt but by issuing a section 114 notice it is often described in the media as a council effectively declaring bankruptcy.
Most councils under a section 114 notice will then pass a new budget to introduce cuts and reduce spending.
