Reports that Birmingham City Council, home to Noddy Holder and his band called Slade, are effectively bankrupt after losses incurred over equal pay cases. Is equal pay a good think or can it have downsides. What's going on here guys, it's all over the news ...

Going to be worse now in Birmingham with non essential services cut.

Its already bad enough. There has been alot of big cases of children getting killed and neglected because of cut backs and can only see things getting worse.

How can alarms bells not start ringing when you are 100 or 200 million in debt?

People that run the council getting paid alot need to get sacked.

Most Local councils have limited headroom with expenditure so exceptional costs, for which they cannot borrow, have a huge impact.

They receive around 75% of their money from central Government so the political leanings of the national government can have a massive effect on their finances.

After 13 years in power the Conservative Government will have hammered Labour controlled councils hard as it carries the twin benefit if reducing their own spending whilst damaging the electability of their opposition in the local council.

This is more about the equal pay case and having to basically back pay the best part of 25 years worth to every single woman where there was a discrepancy….

The actual running of the council itself.. there are/were councils in a worse position.. most have already been mentioned… Northamptonshire county council, Kent county council to name but 2… but because almost all of the big offenders were conservative run councils, they were basically bailed out by the government allowing them to borrow on future revenue

The last 5 years of bankrupt councils:

Woking - Lib Dem

Thurrock, Northamptonshire - Tory

Birmingham, slough, Croydon - Lab

All funded by U.K govt grants as well as council tax and commercial rates, but sure, it’s party politics to blame.

What's more embarrassing I'd that.

It's driven by equal pay dispute. Which only dates back to around the 2010s.

Not a good look.

Labour Council failing to pay women( though its own leader can't even say what a woman is) equal to men.

Absolutely appalling.

Surely if there are two jobs at the same grade and one gets bonus payments (and the other doesn't) if you want the payments, do the job that is paid them.

Laboru run councils are usually the ones going bankrupt. Thisn isn't new.

Are they? I know how you like lists out of context so can you provide one now showing all councils that have gone bankrupt and which party was in charge. If the vast majority are Labour then you win "

Such a list doesn't exist

"No surprise really.

Councils are terrible at budgeting and managing their local economy.

And no surprise given its labour run

When you read this post and then immediately after read FunFella’s post with the list of councils, you can’t help but think “Morley’s post didn’t age well!”

Why didn't it.

“No surprise given it’s Labour run” followed by a list that includes Tory and Lib Dem councils. The Labour dig wasn’t required. Your first point was sufficient and correct.

"Well, no, they're not really managing. There's a growing list of councils in a dire situation and it's getting worse.

A growing list of councils who favour 'risky commercial investment' are not managing? That's a massive shock.

That's not an accurate assessment of the situation.

Isn't it? Willing to paint a more accurate picture?

Not really. No one who disagree would accept my 'painting' and no one who agrees would need it. However, 5 mins research into local government funding would be a start.

Ahh, you're one of those 'you're wrong' type of people who offer nothing alternative?

Got it

Been in an ongoing discussion with one of those a lot lately

I've seen. I was interested in learning but thought 'fuck that' "

You can't be that interested in learning. I told you what to look into - local government funding - and apparently you're unable to spend 5 minutes doing that.

I'm one of those 'I don't waste my time spoon feeding other people' types.

I've looked into it. You wanna disagree then teach me why I'm wrong.

I'm gonna have a wild guess that you're gonna point to the decrease in funding from Central Govt.

Seriously though, there is no such list.

Why?

Because there are no bankrupt councils.

I guarantee there's no list. This one I'm definitely right on. Not often I can say that

The six councils most likely to be next in issuing a section 114 notice, according to the local government source, are Bradford (Bradford), Devon (Conservative), Guildford (Lib Dem since 2023, Conservative 2003-2019), Hastings (Labour), Kent (Conservative), and Southampton (Labour).

You tell me but based on this thread it isn’t far of 50/50 so the implication of what you said was that only Labour run councils go bankrupt which is demonstrably not true.
