There are lots of positives.

For instance… there’s not been another Bridget Jones film since we left the eu.

Brexit sounds like a village in Brittany where English people go on their caravan holidays, to complain about the food in not-England. Do they do cooked breakfast there?

So long as we continue to divide the nation into those who voted one way and those who voted the other, all we will do is perpetuate that division.

It's to late for this shite!

Go to bed, get some sleep! Have a day off!

Will them admitting anything change anything? Will you have the best wank of your life if you read somebody that voted for brexit admits they regret their choice?

Or will things just stay the same as we go round and round this boring arse wheel again and again?

My vote is on the latter. Though I bet you would wank over their admittion.

"A disaster in what way ?"

Lol, have you been on a long trip abroad since it happened?

As a country we have lurched from one shade of shitshow to another, turned over one promised silver platter of "sovereign benefits" to find a meagre, rotting mess, before trotting back into the kitchen to check on the status of our latest "oven ready deal."

And in the face of all of this lived evidence - it is literally all around us that it was a generationally stupid thing - people are still asking for more evidence.

I am thankful that so many younger people who have lived through it are imminently to come of voting age.

I think most of us were hoping it would be a lightheaded joke thread

Wine, anyone?! It's some Kentish stuff because the French wine is stuck in a container in Calais

In my experience of these forums, Brexit threads never end up lighthearted. Maybe this one will, and there's hope for humanity after all?

Bess x

I'll start on the English wine, while we wait. Would you care for some definitely-not-Spanish manchego and crackers?

I prefer a Talisker and a robust cheddar, thanks, but don't let me stop you

Bess x

On the rocks

Never! Making a good whisky too cold ruins the flavour Mind you, I do enjoy the slice cheddar, slice of fruit cake and whisky thing. Is that a Northern tradition?

Bess x

Cheese and fruit cake (esp. Christmas cake) does seem to be a northern thing yes. But I don't like fruit cake..... I do like lemon cake and blueberry muffins but they don't go as well with cheese Who ever invented fruitcake should be drawn and quartered.

Hung first? Or just drawn and quartered? Not up to speed with current execution protocols over the other side of the Pond "

too many to list.

"A disaster in what way ?

Lol, have you been on a long trip abroad since it happened?

As a country we have lurched from one shade of shitshow to another, turned over one promised silver platter of "sovereign benefits" to find a meagre, rotting mess, before trotting back into the kitchen to check on the status of our latest "oven ready deal."

And in the face of all of this lived evidence - it is literally all around us that it was a generationally stupid thing - people are still asking for more evidence.

I am thankful that so many younger people who have lived through it are imminently to come of voting age.

No I haven't been out of the country. I just don't believe the 'shit show' we are in now is down to Brexit. We have had a pandemic and we have fall out from the war in Ukraine.

Brexit means Brexit. In an oven. Ready. Something. Hiding in a fridge. Something.

OP.

Shall we abandon all pretence at democracy and just get you to decide policy in future?

Whether I agree or disagree with the result of an election I have to accept it.

I am not so arrogant as to assume my opinion trumps a majority vote. There were many, many, many reasons electors in both sides voted as they did. Some valid others less so. But they voted. In a democratic election. In a democracy.

When?

If I have to fight a corner it will be for my belief in democracy. My views on that are stronger I never said better.

Incidentally I havent disclosed which way I voted in the referendum. My belief in democracy dictates I must accept the result and I will not spout implied criticism of the electorate several years later. Even if the rezult might not be to my liking.

So THAT, my apparently undemocratic friend, is why I chose to use the term 'remoaner'. Juvenile perhaps, but effective

To elaborate on this, the leave camp did what others have done. Highlighted a target, told the great British people why they're bad, and provided a solution to prevent that. That was the backbone of their campaign.

I would never get involved on a thread like this except to say that it suddens me how people let misguided politics become so divisive. No matter what camp you are on re brexit, nobody with any common sense could argue that it was not based on a mixed bag of apathy, arrogance, misinformation, xenophobia and lies. Whatever the result that would still have been the case. Politics in this country have become as dirty as they come and the like that we uses to see elsewhere and condemn. Over and out. Be kind, don't let politics turn you into an ugly person.

I don't think it would make anyone feel better.

The country needs to come to a place where we can start to properly tackle this problem, and it's not going to happen when half the political world is still pretending that Brexit was a good idea.

We need to face reality, and figure out a way forward.

The trend of increasing numbers of people showing ‘bregret’ - the links have been posted here on several occasions now.

Most people polled consistently believe that we were wrong to vote to leave the EU. And it’s been over 50% for a while now as well.

Doesn’t mean anything will change, of course. But it’s telling.

I am going to change. I voted remain but I have decided to believe, and dig deep and believe hard. If I believe enough I reckon in about 20 years (after I have retired) I may start to see some net benefit and be able to say Brexit was right. Keep on believing. All that positive mental energy has got to achieve something?

Mate, you can't even give the courtesy of answering some of my points, who's the one trying to distract?

I fully expect that we will have more people saying we were wrong to leave than the other. It started at near on 50/50, add in the people who voted leave and now regret it (its a given that at least some people will have regret) and there you have your majority.

"This is not Brexit. It is Brexit in name only. Its the Remoaner establishment refusing to enact the result of the referendum. As for being poorer, covid was not a result of Brexit,Half a billion pounds in quantitive easing to pay for furlough was not Brexit,Russia going into Ukraine and fucking grain was not Brexit,Not buying oil and gas from Russia is not Brexit,The Saudis and others cutting oil production to push prices up is not Brexit.Global inflation/recession is not Brexit.

Ahh the new excuse of this isn't Brexit....even though the tin said Brexit.

Brexit only appears in some peoples mind as an abstract system where everything good is Brexit and everything bad isn't the brexit they voted for.

Bottom line is Brexit Is a fuckity fuck up of Fuckmegastom Fuckticity.

Unless you have a big fat tax free offshore account."

My personal favourite is when they blame "remoaners".

As if Brexit is the fault of people who voted against it.

"Here’s the link updated to July ‘23

As I said, the trend is clear.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/987347/brexit-opinion-poll/

I don't see any trend there. It looks like it's been fairly consistent for the last year.

Consistent towards believing that we were wrong to leave, correct?

Now let’s widen the timeframe to 2016-23 - the data is easily available online.

I know you enjoy getting bogged down in distraction and picking people up on minor stuff, but are we agreed that most people polled believe that we were wrong to leave the EU, and have been for quite some time?

I enjoy getting bogged down in distraction?

Mate, you can't even give the courtesy of answering some of my points, who's the one trying to distract?

I fully expect that we will have more people saying we were wrong to leave than the other. It started at near on 50/50, add in the people who voted leave and now regret it (its a given that at least some people will have regret) and there you have your majority.

That's basic fucking common sense.

Someone piss on your cornflakes this morning, feisty?

2 posts in a row playing the man?

Kinda proves my point "

Hey, feel free to dispute the polling that suggests most people think that we were wrong to leave the EU, and this has been the case for a substantial time now.

I agree. It's been a nightmare for the country.

Agreed. The pollsters are constantly wrong.

It’s the classic Brexit attitude. ‘We won, you lost, suck it up’

Doesn’t matter if it’s made us poorer, if it hasn’t created opportunities, if it’s left us more vulnerable. ‘We won. Get over it’

Apparently something like 1.4m of the people who voted for Brexit are now dead.
