Basically the governor proposed and signs a bill called the stop woke act…
The Florida board of education then revisited how slav ery should be taught to middle schoolers… they are saying that children should be taught there were benefits to slav ery as people learned new skills that could be considered to be beneficial to their lives!
Lots of criticism of this… from the vice president and most Republican presidential candidates!!!
The Florida governor rather than think .. oh dear… doubles down and defends the policy
So…. Blu….. defend ya boy desantis!!!!
You still want him to be candidate when trump goes to jail |

Can't just blame Desantis now can you? The people of Florida chose thier legislatures. They are doing what the people wanted. Otherwise it would be heavy democrat controlled. Yes ? |

Still my candidate for nominee. But if Trump is the nominee I would still vote for him and so will half of the population. Don't know if you aware of that. As Essex Tom says " It's all over the news". |

I just find it strange I get called out for accepting the people's choices . Isn't that how democracy is supposed to work Fabio? Desantis is not on the federal level yet or maybe not it might be Trump. Different politics on the federal level compared to states. My defense is sound. ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

So no response Fabio? You commented on the other thread. Let's be fair why me? I am from Pennsylvania I have a house in Florida but I can't vote there. So why did I get called out I can't support him as a governor. But I can support him as a nominee for president. Let's hear your analysis. |

So in closing in my defense. Did the people of Florida elect the legislatures.Yes they did ... Did they elect Ron Desantis. Clearly the did by a wide margin. They chose it's up to them to decide their lives. ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

I'm not sure what the contention is? It seems like a completely in depth look at sl@very.
How it existed across all regions for millenia, those who fought against it, those that joined the civil war effort after escaping, how they were sold into it by other African cultures, how African contributed to society with their culture, poetry etc.
I am reading the right thing?
The " florida state academic standards social studies 2023"?
Are you saying sl@ves didn't learn skills?
This seems to me like saying you can't acknowledge the nazis did bring about HUGE technological changes in the 20th century because they had bad ideology.
You can acknowledge sla ves were mistreated, it was a disgusting trade etc, but also acknowledge theyblearn3d new skills they wouldnt have in Africa.
This would be bo different to me acknowledging the na zi were a horrific genocidal party but they definitely.made some HUGE technological advancements that benefitted the human race.

If THAT is how the curriculum is being approached then I agree with you. Context is important. It is not forgiveness or to excuse heinous acts or practices but everything should be considered for a fully informed discussion, especially around deeply difficult topics. And clearly context works both ways and that wider view/impact must always be present. |

I skim read the full document.
That's how I interpreted the syllabus. Not a celebration of giving black sl@ ves skills but giving s full picture of silvery from 5000 bc to modern day.
Asian, African , how it still is ongoing, the civil war, the emancipation, a full contextual view.
Maybe Fabio understands differently.

Indeed. Hopefully Fabio can clarify?
I do not think you can teach about sl@very without discussing historical context or the involvement of African states/groups. However, where the curriculum/syllabus needs to tread carefully is to not position that information as some kind of justification for the actions of the Europeans involved in the trade. BOTH things are heinous and should be condemned. |

Democracy is the peoples choice, however the people have to be well informed to make choices. I'm not American, never seen American TV or politics however hearing some of the guff that makes the UK news, I really do wonder if there is a balanced view in America based on what you/they are being fed.
My interpretation of Trump is of a man power greedy hoping to set America up as some sort of family business. As one comedian in Scotland once said....the d*unk man in the corner of the pub that you listen to spout pish for 5 minutes, then you leave with....enjoy yer night mate.
I'd be interested to know why you would vote Trump.

Let’s take a look at the word “woke”
What’s is the opposite of woke? Sleep right?
So people who are classed as woke are conscious and people who are sleep are unconscious.
When you’re “sleep” you’re unaware of your surroundings, when you’re “sleep” your eyes are closed. When you’re “sleep” you are immobile. When you’re “sleep” you dream and dreams are not reality. When you’re “sleep” fantasies are the reality.
This war on woke is kinda stupid, who wants to be asleep all the time?
I think claiming it as an insult really shows how “sleep” these people are.
You know when someone isn’t in on a joke, but everyone else is and it frustrates them because they don’t understand. That’s what people who don’t understand what woke really means feel.
Frustrated that they are not in on the joke.
So people who are “woke” should wake those who are “sleep”.
Just some thoughts |

Yes. People who accuse others of being woke like it is an insult are actually paying them a compliment.
To me being woke is just being nice and respectful to others who may be different to you. Just old fashioned good manners! |

Trouble is that this definition of woke is incorrect. Woke is the past tense of wake and therefore could by understood as no longer awake, back to sleep.
Sorry to be pedantic… |

Not really, people just try to morph these things to use as insults towards people who they feel are making it harder for them to be openly bigoted.
The meaning is basically the same. The dictionary definition.
You usually argue tooth and nail for the dictionary definition of words to apply, except in this case. |

Race and gender…
race is a given, but gender is now a confused space, manipulated in one persons eyes and inclusive in another’s. If a person believes gender can’t be a transferable thing from one to another, is it okay then to not be respectful of that suggestion or thought in the name of science as an example, and still be woke?

I disagree. People that use 'woke' to describe themselves, usually equate the word to 'not racist'. Those that use it as an insult equate it to 'social justice warrior'.
"The meaning is basically the same. The dictionary definition.

I am a big fan of the use of dictionary definitions, but the word 'woke' is too new to have a settled definition.
The problem I have here is that, as we've discussed before, all the dictionaries have different definitions. They mostly use some form of words akin to 'alert to injustice', but those words are subject to interpretation. Some take 'alert' to mean 'being aware of injustice', and others take 'alert' to mean 'actively seeking out injustice and not resting until it has been eradicated'. Those are very different positions. |

I think woke and snowflake a very different. I see snowflake as just another term for a “melt” or someone who doesn’t have the mettle or grit to see things through when things get a little tough.
Calling a woke person woke would just make that person smile. They self identify as woke so anyone trying to use it as an insult towards them wouldn’t carry much weight.
It would be like calling serena Williams a great tennis player.
Just my observation, shoot me down if you think otherwise.

Aren't we saying almost the same thing? Those who don't like their racism being called out would describe anti-racists as "social justice warriors"?

The only times I've been called a "snowflake" was when standing up to racists on a bus harassing an old man calling him a "fucking monkey" and telling him "fuck off back to the jungle".
When I suggested they get off the bus and leave him alone they called me a snowflake and told me to sit down.
However maybe I'm skewed as this is the only time I've been called it. |

When I suggested they get off the bus and leave him alone they called me a snowflake and told me to sit down.
However maybe I'm skewed as this is the only time I've been called it."

"It's just the new version of "snowflake". An insult used by people who feel their safe space to be overtly bigoted is ever decreasing.
Just like the words 'snowflake', 'woke'means different things to different people. Those that use it as an insult have a very different definition to those that use it was a self-descriptor.

Similar situation as "woke".
I would never label myself as "snowflake" or "woke". But have been identified as both by people such as those described on the bus. |

Woke
An oxymoron term used to describe the many indoctrinated & radically left-wing people of today's world who are obsessed with jumping on whatever mainstream bandwagon is necessary to feel included, though ironically being the most intolerant and hypocritical people on the planet.
This is my exact understanding of the word when used as an insult. |

Not so much woke, but snowflake and melt are regularly used to describe the sort of people who drop all their tools at 4.30 to leave job that can’t wait before it’s finished. The sort of people who cost the company much more money than needed because they won’t see it through.
The sort of people who never get their contracts renewed either to be fair. |

Fair enough, never heard it used in that context. And never heard melt being used in anything other than the literal context. But I can see why it would mean the same as snowflake. |

"Let’s take a look at the word “woke”
Just some thoughts
Yes. People who accuse others of being woke like it is an insult are actually paying them a compliment.
To me being woke is just being nice and respectful to others who may be different to you. Just old fashioned good manners!
As a challenge to this, when is it not right to be respectful and nice to others who are different?
It can't be good to be respectful and nice all of the time, events and actions must occur that are not acceptable to a person who holds their own opposing personal values.
It is never acceptable if the opposing views/values are of a personal nature or focused on the attributes of the individual (race, gender for example).
"
I am on shaky ground here as it has all got rather confusing. However, my understanding is that gender and sex are not the same thing.
A person born make can identify as the female gender. They can undergo a combination of surgery and hormone treatment and their gender can be considered female. However, they cannot change sex as they cannot ever be truly female. Their are edge cases as with anything but XX and XY chromosomes cannot be changed. |

I was asking more the question from your definition of woke, you said "To me being woke is just being nice and respectful to others who may be different to you. Just old fashioned good manners!"
in this instance you are saying you are woke, and millions of others like you are. However, if you were to look at trans and say that is not possible and I can't accept that a person born female can become a male or male being a female, are you no longer woke or is there a sliding scale of woke, who sets the woke ceiling?
If it is those at an extreme end of a scale then like all things those looking on will see extreme woke and that is in my opinion why woke is thrown around as an insult, the extremists take something good and turn it into a weapon. |

"I am a big fan of the use of dictionary definitions, but the word 'woke' is too new to have a settled definition.
Those are very different positions."
""Those that use it as an insult equate it to 'social justice warrior'."
Aren't we saying almost the same thing? Those who don't like their racism being called out would describe anti-racists as "social justice warriors"?"
We clearly have different life experiences. In the case of the old man on the bus you describe above, I don't know anyone that would call that 'woke'. That's just standing up for someone that was being bullied. However in the company that I recently worked for, the D&I officer issued a memo saying that black people, as well as Asians should be referred to as "people of colour". I see this as someone looking for an injustice to correct, and several people have described it as 'wokery'. The one black person that I know at that company hates the phrase "people of colour", and feels that it negates his origin when he gets lumped in with all the other non-white people. |

The behaviour you describe doesn't sound productive. But to call it Woke is part of an attempt to discredit the word and the entire concept of "woke", which has originally referred to being aware of social injustice, especially racism. So much so that anyone standing up to racism, bigotry etc gets called "woke" as an insult. Equating the responses to actual racism, with the kind of silliness you described.
That's how I see the evolution of the word anyway.

Can't bite my tongue anymore. Every single one of us are idiots. I am just as guilty. Constantly arguing trying to get a point across that no one else can understand. I done it and so has everyone else. I admit I was a bitch.Clearly the debating is not getting anywhere except bonus points for oneself. So I forgive Fabio I don't think he meant calling me out he was just frustrated about his views compared to mine. Tired of the division. |

I really don’t know!!!
In some respects I am a simple soul. If you mean to cause offence then you are a wanker. If you genuinely inadvertently cause offence then you are a fallible human being who can learn why you offended.
It is surely about intent? |
