I think I asked this a while back. But now there's THAT tape that basically fucks him.

Thoughts? Predictions?

I think it is very unlikely he will be jailed. It's his first offence of this nature, he is a 77 year old man, he claims he had the right to take them and SCOTUS is packed with lickspittle Republicans.

He has also been preparing his followers for his martyrdom for months. Considering the casual way he displayed secret information to a journalist he is clearly intellectually and emotionally incapable of keeping a secret so for me the best course of action is to legally ban him from ever handling Secret information again.

However that will not stop him becoming President again, when he will issue a blanked pardon on all his own federal charges and the whole circus will start again.

I doubt the founding fathers ever thought, as they drafted the Constitution in 1778 following the brutal war of independence, that there would be a time the American people would be stupid enough to elect a President who cannot keep the very secrets who keep them safe.

No, they should keep him around forever if only for his great entertainment value. Going back to sensible American politics would be ever so boring.

He ain’t getting in age consideration if he isn’t showing any contriction or remorse

Nope… they take that shit seriously, for example, a junior who did basically the same thing (taking stuff home) got 4 years in Iowa 2 weeks ago…

If found guilty of the most serious felony the minimum federal advisory is 17.5 years… but there is a caveat in that where no single offence should get more than 10 years…. If the judge is being easy that is where the off ramp is rather than lining up offences to get him the higher sentence!

Being given probation if he is found guilty of 30 odd offences would cause uproar

"It's starting to feel like Trump's at risk of actually going to jail."

If he gets found guilty.. if the judge gives him what should be the federal minimum, trump will appeal! If the judge were to give him probation there is zero doubt the DOJ would appeal! That why the 10 year caveat may be the off ramp…. If he’s good then 15% off for good behaviour.. he is out in 8-9 years!

The most interesting thing is if he is found guilty, the judge is going to have to do a full write up of how she got to the sentence she is imposing, so the justification may well be as fascinating…

There is zero chance he gets probation because there are not going to be enough mitigation to get there without it looking like he isn’t being treated like anyone else would…

And because this woman has already been slapped down by her seniors on another case concerning trump and it almost seeing like she gave deference to him… if she doesn’t play this with the straightest bat ever there are going to be questions asked!

"0% chance he ends up in jail"

I'm betting on house arrest with his secret service detail doubling up as prison guards. And the only boxes he's allowed are from KFC, McDonald's and Domino's Pizza. To keep him happy they tell him the promotional leaflets they put in the boxes are top secret.

For all those people say 0% I am just wondering what mitigation, bearing in mind he hasn’t cooperated, or shown any remorse would get him from 17.5 years to probation…..

I think it’s more likely a next republican president would give him a pardon.. but even that would mean trump would have to admit what he did, and that would be politically toxic

Is that how US presidential pardons work? Does the offender have to admit their guilt before they can be freed?

Yes but ... He is teflon Trump. As soon as a Republican is elected president they will pardon him. And if it is Judge Aileen Cannon she will probably direct an innocent verdict and award costs to Trump.

He may end up with even more federal charges by the end of the week… this time in relation to obstruction of change of power and the January 6th insurrection

This one is interesting because because Michigan have filed state charges against those involved in the fake electors scheme, Georgia were looking at doing the same which is the one trump got caught up in with the phone call to find the votes… and apparently they have spoken to Wisconsin,Arizona,New Mexico,Nevada and Pennsylvania officials with regard to fake electors schemes in those states as well!

They probably won’t charge trump with seditious conspiracy because trump will claim his speech is protected under free speech 1st amendment rights

He said it but others did it…

But the can charge him in incitement if they can prove that he didn’t actually believe what he was saying and in effect the big lie was a big grift! In that he was knowingly telling lies….

They can also charge obstruction of change of power with the fake electors if he was aware of the scheme and that it was knowingly supporting an untruthful premise

You don't think it will not cause even more division and unrest? It will polarize people even more. Like or hate the argument it's already happening. "If convicted it would just cause more political Division and Destruction. Guess we shall see. Interesting times ahead.

Political division and destruction created by whom? And that’s the point….

I hate that argument because you are then saying someone is above the law, and that they should get away with it because it’s inconvenient! You don't think it will not cause even more division and unrest? It will polarize people even more. Like or hate the argument it's already happening. The division is here the worse I have ever seen it. Like I said interesting times ahead. Like it or not. That's my opinion and I am sticking to it. Alot of people are not going to accept a conviction. "

There would be a bunch of people that wouldn’t believe the sky was blue if he said it was red!

No one person is above the law and even being an ex president doesn’t get you a pass….

That will be up to 12 people to decide whether he is guilty beyond reasonable doubt…. and the onus is on the DOJ to get all 12!

The chances of Trump going to a prison are slim I would imagine.

The 24 x 7 protection, would be off the scale and make it practically impossible to manage, and I’m sure Trump would milk that for all it was worth.

What is the reality of Trump being found guilty?

"He may end up with even more federal charges by the end of the week… this time in relation to obstruction of change of power and the January 6th insurrection

It'd be nice if Trump faced some sort of accountability for attempting a coup.

Wiki will ban you for being an unreliable source if you continue making comments which are false

Bob Woodward + Carl Bernstein called it an attempted coup. Simply repeating the words of renowned experts.

Not those upstanding journalists.

Trump did not attempt a coup. That's nothing more than sensationalism.

Let's speak facts.. Trump incited an attempted coup. If, of course, you believe it was an attempted coup at all.

If you think Woodward & Bernstein don't know their business, you're v v wrong. They both called it an attempted coup.

Did you bother to read what I ACTUALLY WROTE. Or did you read what you think I wrote.

I'm not sure what you're trying to argue, to be honest. You just seem worked up.

I'm not worked up.

You have a problem with sources of misinformation. You're also had to spread misinformation.

Be careful or wiki will ban you (that didn't actually happen)

I repeated the words of renowned experts in their field. Are you saying that's misinformation? (There was a typo above, so I'm not sure what you mean.)

You can repeat words all you like, that doesn't make something true.

Trump INCITED an attempted coup. Something which he hasn't been found guilty of yet.

Trump did not attempt a coup.

Hide behind someone else words all you like, all that does is tell us that you haven't actually researched what you're claiming.

Mhm. Ironically, I did research this + repeat the words of experts. But I guess that's a lack of research?

OK. Whatever makes you happy.

One source? Great research

Do you have any of your own thoughts?

Don't worry, the fact that you choose to ignore the correction isn't unnoticed "

I'm truly not sure what point you think you're making. Trump seems to have attempted a coup. Woodward & Bernstein (renowned experts both) looked into this at length & were confident enough to go on the record saying as much.

On research: I trust the word of such experts over anything I can personally dig up from a less trustworthy source. This is the same reason I'd trust my doctor instead of some random link on the web.

I really don't see why you think any of this in an attempt at misinformation or dodging anything from me. V odd.

It may well cause division. So what? Fear of any1 is not a reason to not apply the law. You either have rule of law or you don't.

So more developments in the document case

Superseding inditements filed yesterday that gives more information

The document where in the meeting trump claimed they were housing plans to other people…. They were in fact Iranian attack plans!!

Also now charge with obstruction as apparently once the knew the mar a lago search was coming they tried to delete all the surveillance cameras footage… which means that trump also kept that information from the lawyers who had to sign under oath that everything was given back!!!

As I said… he is so going to jail!!!

One President gets caught bugging their rivals offices, plus some dodgy financing with contributions which lead to president resigning live on world wide T.V - punishment, a pardon.

Another gets caught with cock in another women's mouth, punishment, nothing.

If you look this up there are many other incidents concerning presidents, but never have I heard of one going to jail, to me it is unheard of.

So if Trump goes to jail, there is something very wrong imo

I was about to say…. It may well be unethical… but it wasn’t illegal

And as for the other example… the one thing about watergate that is going to coincide with the trump case is that the cover up is much worse than the crime

In fact the watergate cover up is making what trump has done look like mastermind!

Trump will eventually try and throw his coconspirators under the bus to save himself! You can absolutely see this one coming a mile off!

Also, as mad as it seems to us, Trump was electable, and then got a lot of support and votes for his second term even though he lost.

Seems like being thick as pigshit, incompetent and being overtly narcissistic doesn't bother the voters.

I'm afraid it is this type of attitude that strengthens Trump's position amongst his supporters.

Trump whether you love him or hate him, resinated with the electorate and captured the mood of the USA.

People wanted to make America great again, and that was a line in the sand that gave Trump is populism.

Great showmanship for those that wanted to believe in his vision.

His ego and lack of statesmanship soon took centre stage in everything he did, but he was consistently misquoted and ridiculed by the press, giving him more support that allowed him to continue to be so brazen in his approach to home and world events.

The press should have stepped back and reported on the facts and not made it personal, just like the BBC and Farage.

And after that he was pardoned for any crime’s by his old vice president, Gerald Ford

So you ask why is trump in so much trouble?

Where do we start!

Retaining top secret documents.. jack smith has been super smart is actually not charging him with taking the documents from Washington down to Florida (and then to New Jersey) he is being charged with not given them back, then obstruction in not giving everything back when his lawyers had to declare under oath that he had given everything back, and obstruction in moving documents around so they wouldn’t be given back!

And that’s without showing off top secret documents to people not authorised at any level to see it!

And that is without what we think is coming which is obstruction in the course of a federal election and a change of power….

But yeah…. Squeeky clean!

He is not not getting jail time because the absolute minimum jail time under what is charged with is 17.5 years…. There are no mitigating circumstances without any remorse or contriction… and some sort of probation would absolutely be challenged because lower level people have gotten jail time for less secure document retention

As for me anyone who is in power and has power over me and makes rules which I have to follow or be punished.

Whats with the patronising.

I did say I will learn something and I just did, I could have done an internet search and gave you the correct information but conversation is golden and promotes good manners, in my experience.

If you don't like trump then you don't like him it not an issue for me, it is just as I had noticed many foreign leaders get into bother and unlike us nothing happens to them or they get a pardon as in the usa.

So when it comes to trump why is he going to jail, why are they wanting to imprision him, why will he get no pardon when others have.

I don't need any answers just put my thought out there and I will continue to do so.

Many thanks for your reply I did learn it was ford not Carter well reminded, but at least we agree that Nixon was a wrong un.

Rich, well connected white people are occasionally jailed. Case in point: Epstein.

It's kind of like the trump investigation. It takes years to investigate. It's is 2023 maybe some people can go read the oversight committees findings so far. I am sure some people will disagree. Yet it takes time to dig through all the information does it not ? Weird how 2023 is a timeline thus adventure is not over yet I guarantee you will see others try and to defend the corruption. So I'll just wait and see . Queue the usual suspects.

So let's all wait and see. Everything everyone rants about is just speculation. Including myself sometimes. But I am positive someone will try and say they are right. It never fails. So let this adventure begin.

Well it would be all sorts of ironic if he did end up in jail after everything he tried to make people believe with regards to the Central Park 5 and and his refusal to apologise after they were all completely exonerated…

You mean that oversight committee whos star witness could not be found… only to have it revealed that he is wanted by the FBI after he fled the country after being accused of being a Chinese spy, and brokering an illegal oil deal between the Iranians and china!

You could not Make it up!

The findings… you mean the 1023 that was dismissed 3 years ago by a then led trump DOJ, and the trump appointed AG bill Barr! And this investigation started again under trump with a trump appointed lawyer leading it…

Which came back with 2 charges of not paying taxes for 2 years… which actually they rarely charge he paid it all back with interest and a gun charge which they again rarely ever charge!

Nope. The race card is when someone uses race to present a fact for which race is not really an element but they would like to claim it is.

It’s my belief that this is not an example of this, due to overwhelming evidence that rich, well connected white folks tend not to end up in prison.

Which is exactly what you did in your reply saying he was white..

He will keep running because it’s the only thing that may possibly keep him out of jail…

there is zero chance he wins the general because there is no state he lost in 20 that he would regain in 24 (bearing in mind in all the statewide races In 22 in contested states he says he’s won… the republicans did not gain one senate seat!)

He might be lauded by his republican base… but there are not enough independents of disenfranchised republicans that would come back to trump to win..

Okay…… 3rd inditement coming

4 charges relating to the 2020 election case…

1) conspiracy to defraud the United States

2) conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding

3) obstruction of, and attempt to obstruct, an official proceeding

4) conspiracy against rights

Due to be court in Washington on Thursday

That would suggest the illegal fake electors schemes across the states, the phone calls trying get them to find votes, the attempt to try to get them to stop the change of power on January 6th

He is not being charged with the actual violence on January 6th… so far!

You are in the half that would still vote trump after knowing everything we know… the question is why and you may be able to answer that!

Because the more I read of this particular indictment… most of the juicy and damaging stuff is actually coming from republicans… in this case I would encourage you to read the stuff regarding Mike pence…because the more I am reading the more I think he may be the star witness in this case!

The one new detail I have learnt today is that it was mark meadows who alerted pence’s secret service detail to get him out of the senate just in time

Two other things….

1) there is lots of information regarding the Georgia situation in this federal indictment… so I wonder if this now persuades the Georgia DA not to press charges

2) trial calander…. He is supposed to be having his New York hush money trial In January, and the documents trial in May…. I wonder if New York would be prepared to delay their trial dates and with the documents cased trump trying to push it back and top secret clearance things…. "Two other things….

I wonder if this will end up being the first trial… and it could get this one done on the quicker side "

Keep going people like you contribute To his base. Clearly I am right. He might not win . Yet we are still here. Weird. No matter how much you scream and others. He has the support. Let me give a personal experience. Life was better under him. The only reason I like desantis is hoping he don't come across as to extreme to some people.I Guess trump is a better choice. Win or lose let the games begin.

So what happened to due process? Do you know everything ? No you don't. It's just the arena at of public opinion. I can point to some cases were I was right and you were wrong. You are just expressing a personal opinion are you not ? Just like I was wrong and you were right. "

What we do know is what is being alleged in this 45 page indictment…. I really suggest you give it a read… because the more I read, the more I think “oh shit”

Anyway… swings and roundabouts… where it looks like he drew the soft judge to oversee his case in Florida, it looks like he had drawn the hanging judge to oversee the case in DC

Anyway… speedy trial act… hopefully 70 days from Thursday (if New York are prepared to defer)

It also makes the document case more interesting because the 17.5 year federal minimum if found guilty in that case is premised on his having no other convictions…. If found guilty in DC, then the federal minimum for the Florida case goes up to 25 years!

I would encourage everyone mildly interested in trump to go and read the indictment… it’s 45 pages… it’s double spaced… it will probably take you 15-20 minutes tops!

What you are going to hear is a lot of republicans spin and use whataboutism and deflection

The interesting thing is that every single witness that will appear on the stand will be a Republican.. from the lower level staffers right up to then chief of staff mark meadows and then vice president Mike pence

Remember you are going to hear the words Obama appointed judge a lot…. Also remember that when she was confirmed to the federal judge bench she was confirmed by the entire senate… the vote was 97-0

My only minor gripe is because it’s a federal trial.. at the moment there is no provision to have cameras or equipment in the courtroom so we can take it live or just listen… I hope they put in a request to make an exception because it would be in the public interest… I am sure the trump will say one thing in public and encourage it… and in court his legal team would fight that request tooth and nail!

I read the indictment earlier this morning. It seems astonishing to me that any right-minded person who read that would not at least pause their boot-licking adulation of a man who was denied what he wanted by...... Republicans.

Anyone who can't accept the foundations of this indictment and who is willing to trash ALL of the Republican witnesses named in the indictment are cult followers.

Ask them for yourself if you want, Blu.

In your case, probably because you enjoy ignoring certain things.

You could read the indictment doc if you want. It's freely available. It demonstrates v clearly what Trump and his Co-conspirators did.

The charges against Trump are because he seems to have broken the law in multiple ways. This is about applying the law to even the richest & most powerful individuals. It's about showing there actually is rule of law for all.

Trump will hopefully get his day in court where he will be judged in front of a jury. The same way any of us should be if we break the law.

I am reading that Trump’s defence is going to be that he believed then and continues to believe to this day that the election in 2020 was rigged and st01en from him.

If this is the case, he could legitimately argue that it was he alone who was fighting with every sinew for democracy - and is continuing to do so. Of course in making a case like this he lives himself open to accusation of being irrational and unstable for disbelieving his own (and very senior) Republican colleagues, Representatives, Senators, Judges and other senior DOJ and State justice officials.

He is now the man claiming that the earth is flat.

We hope he does end up in jail. Does the US Constitution ban people who have been convicted of crimes from being President? Even a conviction without jail time could be enough to keep him out of the White House. Unfortunately, he is using and will use the ongoing legal issues he has as a calling card for all the usual people. The same people who stormed the Capitol and who share his conspiracy theories.

We never realised how fragile democracy is. All it takes is someone utterly unwilling to conform to basic standards of decency. Many politicians lie, traditionally when caught in a lie one would apologise and resign.

Trump, and to a lesser extent Johnson, eschewed this - lie, lie, double down on the lie, and accuse everyone else of having it in for you when they accuse you of lying. It destroys the pillars of democracy and impacts the fabric of society.

What does polling reveal? The opinions of people, right? Are the majority always right?

And if the opinions of the people are being swayed by an individual who lies (and let’s face it, Trump lies), how reliable are those opinions if based upon untruths?

On the subject of polls - Incidentally, most Americans polled think that Trump acted illegally in Georgia. A majority believe he acted illegally re: Jan 6th, most believe he should not be allowed to serve if convicted, most think that the 2020 election was fair, and most wouldn’t back someone who denies the 2020 result.

Have you been “told” you can’t participate in discussions on UK politics OR have you been asked “why” you want to so much? Very different things.

The main topic where you get animated and disparaging is when discussing the NHS. In a recent thread your opening comment was to insult British people. I see very few if any posts insulting Americans. You also regularly insult individual posters. I think some of us are just keen to understand why you feel the need to do any of that? Seemingly that makes us “elite” for some reason?

A quote from yesterday:

“The former president has railed against the indictment, calling for the “fake” case to be moved out of Washington DC where he claims it is “IMPOSSIBLE to get a fair trial”.

This is the nonsense that his acolytes truly believe, so if/when he’s found guilty the story of the persecuted victim continues ad infinitum.

Yep whole paragraphs and context matter:

1. So technically we are going to protect the voice of us working class people. = Trump is the voice of the working class.

2. Get mad. Throw a fit = the working class gonna defend him.

3. I see it growing every day = there is growing anger amongst the working class at the treatment of Trump.

4. Like it or not he might be bulletproof = Blu hypothesises that Trump will continue to get away with stuff (and continue to have the support of working class).

Ergo Blu thinks that Trump is good for the working class (or is saying the working class think Trump is good for them). So a fair question is to ask why Blu thinks that!

Absolutely- it’s been portrayed for several years now as ‘the (generic) left’ having a hissy fit because they don’t like the result of elections - but it’s far more important than that. This is the fundamentals of democracy itself.

John Major was a right wing PM - but fundamentally a decent human being. I’d argue that Cameron was too (albeit something of a hubristic one). Trump, Johnson et al are not comparable.

Yup, that's what Blu said. I'm taking that first sentence as meaning 'we don't want Biden, so will be voting for the other guy'. I don't see anything in there that says that the working class will benefit from Trump being bulletproof. What are you seeing?

BTW: I had to look up what FJB meant. It stands for 'Fuck Joe Biden', and is apparently a common phrase used to show disrespect to the liberal elite and the woke.

"You either have rule of law or you don't. It feels like Trump is the ultimate test of that for the USA.

This, if they continue on the path of tribal politics where 'their person' is unaccountable as per the laws of the land and the constitution irregardless of the allegations they are in a dangerous place..

I think, in a way, Berlusconi may have been the template that both Johnson & Trump followed. Maybe the West should have paid closer attention to just how damaging that toxic clown was. If we had, maybe Johnson & Trump wouldn't have risen to power.

Agree with you on Major. Got to disagree with you on Cameron. Clear example of an entitled Etonian silver spoon (who married money too) playing at politics like it was a game of monopoly.

Yeah I don’t disagree with that, perhaps I worded it badly - I believe 100% that if Cameron was rocked by a scandal or caught in a lie, he’d at least have the decency to apologise and resign. I doubt he’d have doubled down a’la Trump or Johnson.

Gave a breakdown above. The most important line is...

“voice of us working class people”

Note the “us” so clearly Blu identifies with these people and clearly thinks Trump is their voice. Surely having a voice (the biggest voice in the world if you are POTUS) is a benefit and being bulletproof means be will be back as their voice?

Ah ok yes I agree with that. He would have done the right thing (he did run away after enabling the whole Brexit mess and this open the door to Johnson, so pretty unforgivable).

This always niggles me. People are always saying that they value morals and principles in a politician, and that if a politician gets something wrong they should resign.

Cameron initiated a referendum and then led a campaign to stay in the EU. He lost, so he resigned. I was expecting people to praise him for doing the right thing, but instead everybody complains that he 'ran away'.

Criticise him for calling the referendum if you want, chastise him for failing to lead a better campaign, but you can't complain that he resigned when he lost the vote. That's the way we all want politicians to behave.

agreed. I also don't see why people expected soneone to take the uk thru something they didn't believe in. Especially when it was this big.

Given the hiding May got as a "remainer" in charge, Camerons position would have been 100x worse.

In this example what are you saying he got wrong. Calling the referendum, or campaigning to remain in the EU?

From my perspective, it appeared as if he called the referendum to win back voters from UKIP in the 2015 GE. Which he did, so you could have argued this was the right thing to do for his party.

He campaigned to remain. Which by every conceivable measure, was the right thing to do for the country.

"So technically we are going to protect the voice of us working class people. Get mad. Throw a fit. I see it growing every day. Like it or not he might be bulletproof. Insanity to some liberals because it's their beliefs. So after witnessing community behavior for a common cause. Guess what I am still here and still strong. Win or lose. Hate me it's ok. I stand by my conviction. Isn't politics fantastic? So let's run with this shit. I am sure you all will get your entertainment worrh "

This is not protected under 1st amendment protection of free speech… best example I heard yesterday was “imagine if Tony soprano had said to one of his people to go a whack someone! And that person then went and did it!” That speech is not protected…

That is why jack smith said in his very 1st paragraph of the indictment (so I know you have not read it!) that the argument isn’t about 1st amendment rights and he use his right to do that… it is that he went over and above that in this scheme.. which funny enough his own lawyer blurted out in admission on fox last night!

What he got wrong was his estimation of public opinion. He expected that the 'remain' argument would win the day, and he made it clear that 'remain' was the official government position. Once the vote came in and 'leave' got the majority, he did the honourable thing and resigned, since his policy proposal had been rejected by the populace.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying that Cameron was a great man, or even a passable leader. I'm just saying that it's unfair of people to value principles in a politician, and then complain when said politician acts on those principles.

See the interesting thing is if you actually ask what trump did for poor people… you don’t hear a lot back

He gave his richest friend a huge tax cut…..

He tried to take healthcare away from the poorest….

He didn’t actually do a whole lot…

Fair enough.

To many of us he dropped the brexit turd on the country, then fucked off.

But I can see it both ways.

His approval rating says otherwise and I witnessed that on Wednesday night. My community and what they think is best for them. It doesn't matter what candidates we choose there will be some sort of Disdain from the other side. Might as well keep the one with the biggest voice and visa versa. It's going to be a wild ride.

He talked about making America great, and he gave the appearance of change, and he made small people feel that there was hope. That might seem like a very insubstantial thing to you, but compare it to what Biden has done for poor people - nothing at all.

I'm sure someone will come along with a list of good things that Biden has done for the USA, but what we're talking about here is things that directly affect the average working American.
