The Metropolitan police is broken and rotten, suffering collapsing public trust and is guilty of institutional racism, misogyny and homophobia, an official report has said.

The largest police force in the UK isn’t fit for purpose, has it always been this bad?

Yep, I agree, I am not sure what the solution is but it can’t go on like this anymore

Yet Sadiq Khan got rid of the white gay woman in charge of the Met.

That looks a bit racist, homophobic and misogynistic.

Or perhaps she just wasn’t very good? Remember that most (all?) of the findings against the Met happened on her watch!

Todays report vindicates that decision

Don't agree, the issues go back decades..

MacPherson was a chance to address some of those issues that have plagued the service but that was never fully accepted..

This is a damning report and highlights deep systemic failures but like MacPherson if it turns into a kick fest on all the police in the Met it won't be fully effective which it needs to be given the mess..

Ok yes it goes back far further than just Cressida’s watch BUT my point was it was still happening on her watch and she didn’t address it (or didn’t do enough). So she had to go.

If you have had dealings with the met for most of your life it was pretty obvious to anyone with half a brain that its mainly staffed by nutters and thugs

Like most organisations, most staff probably do try to do their jobs as best they can.

However, the more you underfund and overstretch the staff, the lower morale falls, the less attractive an organisation it is and the less selective and attentive to poor performance it becomes.

It's a predictable failure, as is what is happening in the NHS and armed forces for exactly the same reasons.

"Split it up. "

What do you mean by split it up?

I don't think that it makes sense for civil policing in a single city to be divided between multiple forces.

Do you mean split out the national policing activities like organised crime and diplomatic protection and anti-terrorism?

If so, that would appear sensible as there is no reason for that to have anything to do with one regional police force.

That would be very sensible. But highly unlikely

Also a very good idea would be to stop appointing career Officers to the top job. As they have proved incapable of running the Met. Yes the policing side needs to run by officers but policy and running should be done by someone from outside the institution.

Yes.

As an Institution, it's always been all of the above. It has never been reflection of the region it represents and that has been by design.

I don't think that having someone with no experience of policing running the police force makes much sense.

How could you conceivably allocate resources or set timetables if you have no experience of how difficult or complex something is or what the necessary steps are or how long it takes?

How would you know if a plan would improve the situation or make it worse?

Having external oversight or consultation might make sense if it is not politically appointed. So not the Mayor or a Police and Crime Commissioner.

Questioning and requiring explanations for decision making but not making those decisions.

You would have someone asking the difficult questions about why and how and what is needed. The divisional heads would have to justify why ,not just come out with the usual platitudes. Not just splurge money on the next gimmicky thing.

How would you know if a plan would improve the situation or make it worse?

Nobody really knows the out come of any decision made. But having someone from outside asking difficult questions makes people more accountable for those decisions. And maybe because they are not part of the institution there might come up with different answer that work better than the tried and tested ones.

That is the big question as at present it’s answerable to the mayor and home office. How do we get a non political oversight in place. Because any committee is going to be political

Reform of any police force cannot be achieved by people who have spent their careers inside that system. They are part of the system and even all the good officers in that system are tarnished by the small number of bad officers. You need to find officers from countries outside of your jurisdiction with good policing systems to come in and identify where changes are needed and to identify serving officers who can lead the rest.

Also the police cannot be effective when it's under the control of different political entities. They need to be independent of whatever idiot happens to be mayor, head of the home office etc. Can you ever trust a police officer in high position if they have that position because of the whim of some numpty who happens to be mayor or a buddy/backer of some clown in number 10.

The government controls the purse strings, controls who runs the police and controls the laws they police. When you have a bunch of clowns controlling all of this it's actually hard to believe that so many police officers are good officers and its only a small percentage that are doing all the damage.

Politicians or the clowns should only have the power to enact laws and no more power over the police, crown prosecution service, judiciary, prison service and also hmrc. These bodies should be independent from the legislative branch of government and not answerable to it.

Bring in former officers of good standing, or high ranking officers from reputable police services outside of your country to lead reform. Set up a body above the police forces to monitor them/investigate them if needed then set up a body to oversee the police, prison service, cps, judiciary and hmrc made up of independent experts from both the UK and abroad with representatives for each service and also front line members of the police, prison service etc to advise on realities of day to day policing and only one representative appointed by Parliament.

I'm guessing they mean the Brazilian electrician, Menezes. But they may clarify.

Heathrowish

An innocent Brazilian who closely resembled a terrorist suspect was killed as a result of operational mistakes in that he emerged from a blind spot (or the surveillance officer was unsighted for whatever reason) in the same row of premises where a suspected safe house existed.

Yes....it was wrong and shouldn't have happened but can someone provide the factual outcome of the resulting enquiry as opposed to a personal opinion?

As an aside, she shouldn't have become Commissioner because she didn't have the level of qualification that some of the other candidates could have put forward.
