"Any thoughts on the honours system?
Is this to do with Boris’s dad getting a knighthood?
"
I'm curious what people think of the honours system in general. The whole Johnson's dad thing is just part of it. |

hahaha
A couple of points.
I don't want to be a Labour politician. I'm not even a Labour supporter. Also, what on Earth has any of that got to do with the topic?
And it's incredibly odd when I invited you to air any thoughts/examples you wanted your reponse was: why do I need to? |

It's fine in principle.
Most countries have an honours system of some kind to acknowledge achievement.
Ours is slightly anachronistic, but that is a thread of history that has a great deal of merit to my mind.
How it functions is another matter.
Zero political involvement is the only acceptable method with independent organisations nominating and selecting. |

I agree political involvement is a key problem. |

Yes. Especially since the warmonger was awarded a knighthood last year.
OK, so I do understand that all former PMs have been bestowed the honour of joining the order of the garter, but it's not necessarily a guaranteed thing and is entirely the decision of the Monarch.
Yes, we know the Monarch is supposed to remain politically neutral and so can not be seen to favour one political party or another, but my thoughts were that perhaps Her late Majesty could have read the room a little better - especially after that petition that was started got over a million signatures. |

The whole it-comes-with-the-job thing feels v wrong when it comes to honours. |

"Any mention of Empire should go. And hopefully Royal involvement too. "
I disagree with that. History is important and we are one of very few countries with such a long thread of continuity.
If it is used and understood properly it should provide perspective. Good and bad.
Don't erase your history. |

Well now I have to join in and agree with you.

I agree with about 90% of what’s been posted on this subject. The ace I have to grind is the obvious and ‘in your face’ way that some people have been bestowed honors in the past - some being totally politically motivated from both sides of the political spectrum. There should be some form of public vetting of candidates (we’re supposed to be a democracy not an autocracy) so that the people being bestowed with with honors actually deserve it. On the matter of the ex British prime minister whos current list of candidates is under scrutiny & criticism - I’m not suprised at all, in my opinion it there hasn’t been a political figure that has created so much discord and been able to be as economical with the truth & legally scrape through the damage caused. Remember not too long ago - the millions to be saved being paid to the EU - being redirected to the NHS - problem solved - vote Brexit Get the job done - Legally challenged for lying in oir judicial system - which basically said - what do you expect ? Exaggerated rhetoric is the name of the game in politics !
What about being truthful ? Exacting in what is being told to the nation. I could do a proper character assassination, but I’d advise that you research yourself and make your own mind up - political persuasions and beliefs are a personal choice in this country. Maybe we should put the honors list to some form of public vote ? |
