This has been going on for a while now but it's just been brought to my attention again via BBC News.
I get that the public report certain things but the Police encouraging us to upload footage of bad driving and do their work for them?
Is this is a good thing or not? |

Absolutely a good thing in my opinion.
There are lots of entitled people who still seem to think it’s ok to use a mobile phone while driving and laws don’t apply to them! Would footage sent to the Police / Employer leading to fines or pen points help reduce this? Who knows

If there was consistency about the way that the Police wanted “crimes” reporting then it would be Ok.
The issue I have is that they only want slam dunks reported and not the things that they may need to make an effort.

I'm in two minds. I suppose it's marginally better than posting the videos on Facebook.
Obviously I want crime reported. On the other hand some people will appoint themselves guardians of good driving and take great delight in submitting videos.
Also I'm a bit uncomfortable with policing my neighbours and peers. |

Ss far as I'm aware, Operation Snap is for uploading 'evidence' to the Police so they can investigate criminal offences. It's not for employers.
I, of course, would like crime reported but I think I feel a little uncomfortable with 'community policing', there's plenty of CCTV available to Police in most towns should they want to use it. |

It's like the groups of old guys in high vis jackets who wave speed cameras at me in a small village I drive through, at or below the speed limit I might add. They note down my reg number every time. If I had the time or inclination I'd get out and ask them why a group of men are noting down a lone woman's details when she's committed no offence |

In general CCTV is never going to catch and help reduce mobile phone use while driving. Which people probably don’t care about until it affects them |

Well the alternative is that we don't upload the footage and the police do nothing about it. That sounds like a worse option to me.
But thanks for the reminder. I have some footage of a guy that brake-tested me on the motorway last weekend that needs uploading to them. |

because most employers have a no mobile phone use whilst driving a company vehicle and any footage showing such would be used for disciplinary action by the employer .we have a dash cam recording both a forward view and the driver after any incidents or accidents this is up loaded and reviewed can sink you or save you has saved me twice from false reports |

Why would footage be sent to employers? because most employers have a no mobile phone use whilst driving a company vehicle and any footage showing such would be used for disciplinary action by the employer .we have a dash cam recording both a forward view and the driver after any incidents or accidents this is up loaded and reviewed can sink you or save you has saved me twice from false reports "

Around here it is useless. We have a persistent problem with HGVs cutting through 7.5 tonne limits. I video them doing it, making sure that I get the driver, number plate and the HGV driving past the 7.5 tonne sign. I upload the videos to the GMP website and every time I get a response they decline to prosecute.

I video them doing it, making sure that I get the driver, number plate and the HGV driving past the 7.5 tonne sign. I upload the videos to the GMP website and every time I get a response they decline to prosecute.
Completely useless."
Well of course GMP and all the other police forces don’t have the staffing or resources. It’s a travesty, this government have stripped this service to the bone.
How can they look at all the evidence, it would probably take them years.

Perhaps because you didn't provide the police with any evidence that the vehicle was fully laden. Without that, there's no proof that the vehicle did indeed weigh more than 7.5t. |

I think they would, imagine how many videos they probably get, thousands each one has to be properly reviewed and a report needs to be generated then it needs to be sent up to be checked then confirmed as an offence.
There are entire processes we as the public don’t see.
Now if they had more resources like people to help at the backend it would probably be quicker.
The entire justice system is breaking down because of years of neglect.
We deserve better for the amount of money we pour in via our taxes, and all this government is doing is wasting money on whatever pet project they want.
As much as people want us to believe that technology is going to solve all our problems they forget that people are still needed to carry out the difficult tasks. |

I ignored him and carried on slowly overtaking for the next 95 seconds. When I did pull over into lane 2, he pulled past me, moved into lane 2, then slammed his brakes on. I swerved back into lane 3, and he sped up, moved into lane 3 in front of me, and put his brakes on again. This happened 5 times till I surprised him by accelerating and boxing him in behind another car.
Happily, we then entered some roadworks, so everyone slowed down to 50, and I lost him. |

The second lane is always full of second lane drivers forcing the entire motorway network doing 71 mph + to use one lane. |

Having been on the receiving end of some very aggressive driving 3 weeks ago that nearly smashed the side and front of my car, which in the drivers stupidity, drove onto a roundabout directly in from of a courier van.
Police said not enough evidence however, copy of dash cam from mine and courier sent to CEOs office has got a result- both driver and passenger 'fired' for Gross misconduct and endangerment in operation of a company vehicle.
Having started as a tailgating incident by a van towing a 4.5 tonne digger, ended up with an attempt to 'tail whip' my vehicle with the trailer.
Most times the police are dismissive, even given absolute proof as they are not willing to pursue and give resources.
I've had better results going directly to employers over incidents with company vehicles. |

Roads are dangerous as it is without idiots making them worse.
Most companies have their own on board recording which the vehicle I mentioned earlier was fitted with.
The company phoned to inform they downloaded onboard recording which completely agrees with my side of the story.
Unfortunately, yesterday I experienced a grab truck from the same company deliberately run a red light as I was completing a right turn.
At least I know there will be recordings when I speak again with their CEO tomorrow. |

Sometimes people do make mistakes and it's nice to know some wannabe cop with a dashcam is there to make them pay for it when a normal copper would roll his eyes and keep driving.
It does make sense them feel important though. |

That's just the sort of thing that should be reported rather than someone going through a red light a milli second after it changed although when I did it the cop said I shouldn't have put myself in the position to be brake tested and should have given him more space even though he got 3 points. |

I’ve often thought that the number of cameras along the motorway network that are being used to monitor traffic flow, could also be used to enforce road laws.
As an example a lane is closed on a motorway and cars are either ignoring the gantry red cross or using the hard shoulder to get further up the road.
Why are the highways agency not being more proactive and capturing these events and passing them to the police for consideration? They might start to make the motorway networks a little safer… |

You'll be pleased to know that cameras are indeed being used for just that. I saw several people driving on a red cross lane and being photographed just last week. |

Lane hogging is a major cause of of congestion. If you’re only going one mile an hour quicker then don’t overtake as you’re being selfish.
If you’re overtaking get on with it and get back into any left lanes available instead of slowly taking your time. It’s not your place to police others behaviour. If they want to do 75+ then it’s their risk and their fault if it goes horribly wrong?
This type of lane hogging and lane blocking was announced as an offence which will now be vigorously enforced with prosecutions.
In three years only 135 offender were prosecuted. So not really instilling confidence in the actions of the police.
Years ago there were motorway patrols on every county of the country . Now they respond mostly only to calls and save fuel by keeping the cars stationary.
All cars will be electronically limited soon enough so enjoy any freedom you have now.
Making new cars activate limiters in 30mph areas is already under discussion. Those of you with more modern cars will notice your car tells you when you’re entering a limit. It can easily slow you down too if the government see fit.
Bad driving such as lane hogging leads to over reactions and aggressive driving for those with less patience. Better driving all round would be a bonus. The amount of people who can’t drive properly on a motorway is staggering,
Our truck drivers used to dread school holidays when the roads became clogged with people who just commute the same routes all year then think they are capable drivers in all road situations.
Scary how shit and uncourteous we have become.
As I said better driving all round us what’s needed not thousands of stupid minor offences swamping limited police resources. |
