With the suspected Chinese weather balloon / surveillance balloon that the USA have reportedly just shot down, what are your thoughts?

I suspect it has something to do with Russia asking China for intelligence on the USA

Mentioned on TV that the minimum operating height is 60 thousand feet, the same hight of this balloon. Plus satellites do just a good as a job, so reckon it's deliberate stunt to piss the Americans off, in retaliation over Taiwan perhaps

Just seen a clip of Biden trying to walk up the steps to air force one and someone has shopped in the balloon bouncing off him and knocking him over.

It’s the little things

Took their time over shooting it down should have done it over Canada. Nobody would have noticed

No worries no different than a spy satellite. I was us military we had times that if a adversarial satellite was overhead . We knew way ahead of time and adjusted tactics. A balloon is much slower and easier to track. Take the event as posturing . We know how to fool any adversary spying.

The test was whether the US were prepared to shoot it down. China has satellites so didn’t really need the balloons. The US could also jam the instruments of a balloon because it’s at 50-60k feet not space.

If the US did nothing it would show weakness.

Resolve and nerve testing comes to mind.

in the past the balloons are notoriously hard to shoot down.Using a f22 to do it probably surprised the Chinese military.

Honestly they didn't get much Intel that was already known. If it was to help Russia it would have taken a more southern approach. Over Alabama Kentucky and Tennessee. It did fly over Fort Bragg .

I would have loved to have seen the instrument they think would have been’2a’ compliant that would hit it….

Almost to shoot it down so it landed at sea but within the 12 mile U.S. territorial boundaries was a masterstroke.. they would have had navy ships in the area to retrieve it quickly

Apparently our anti spy balloon defense system in Seattle didn't work. I guess the space needle needs a upgrade.

The shoot down is a aviation first. It's now be known as the F-22 air to air kill.

Shoot it down?

Wasn’t it something like 11 miles high?

They only way that would be shot down would be with proper military equipment.

Didn't China attack the USA in WW2, with an incendiary device fitted to a weather balloon.

Maybe it was a practice run for another attack.

A balloon is easy to track once noticed but only if you are specifically looking for balloons. Keep in mind US air defence isn't just ground radar in the US, it's all over the world, including on navy ships. Though as said, they have to be looking for slower objects at great height instead of the 'usual rockets, jets, and missiles.

The whole point of using a balloon instead of satellites is because satellites follow pre determined and predictable orbits. Balloons can be snuck in and can potentially catch activity that a country may not want to be seen.

Imagine if it had a suitcase nuke on it? Funny how the media don't mention things like that isn't it?

They don't mention things like that because it's wild fantasy. The size of balloon that would be needed to carry a nuclear weapon would make it very conspicuous indeed, and it would be shot down well before it managed to get anywhere useful.

Why does the USA have to spoil the fun. I love letting balloons go, high up in the sky - not for someone to come along and shoot it down.

Bit dramatic using expensive missles to do what a couple of lead shots can achieve at a fraction of the cost.

Sudden Stratospheric Warming event just triggered, maybe it's Moscow monitoring the weather for another 'Beast from the East' in a few weeks.

If you go look on flight radar. This new looks like it was a planned intercept over water. There is a strato tanker over the lake.

That’s the scary thing, I think they might be silly enough to try. With the USA and Europe watching Russia/Ukraine I think that China will use this a opportunity to push its boundary’s and hope that it will take a lower priority to Russia the Ukraine situation
