"In war, the winner is the one that packs the hardest punch in the least amount of time. Ukraine needs the weapons to be able to do that. Russia sowed the wind, they should reap the whirlwind. Criticism of Germany is right but what we've sent won't make a material difference. What we could (some say should) do is organise for a larger quantity of the Challenger 1s that Jordan has recently retired. They would be just as effective as the German Leopards and would all come from a single source, as opposed to anywhere in Europe wanting an upgrade on theirs. Though a more recent poll gives a plurality to Germany sending tanks, but only slightly. 46% in favour, 43% against (see here https://www.tagesschau.de/inland/deutschlandtrend/deutschlandtrend-3277.html). Given how close that would be to the margin of error, the government can justifiably claim they are reflecting public opinion. Though I think that's a dangerous precedent, governments should be prepared to do what is unpopular, usually much more unpopular than this with regards to foreign policy. And as I have posted, Poland intends on giving them Leopards anyway, no doubt they won't be alone. I'd imagine the Germans will follow suit but will only do so after others have done, not just Poland. | |||
