"Used to be left but now im politically homeless."

I feel this. Also been hearing a lot about the politically homeless of late. And also the notion of “I didn’t leave the left - the left left me.” Which also resonates.

I guess if I were to try and pinpoint it, I’m a blend of libertarianism, classical liberalism with a sprinkle of conservatism (mostly of the fiscal nature, none of that religious stuff) mixed in. Ask me 10 or even 5 years ago and I would have said left, or centre-left without hesitation. Now I’d have to say probably centre-right.

Basically, the left have been slipping further and further away from the reasonable middle and I just had to peace out.

There's things I believe in that would have left wingers decry me as a alt right nazi fascist cunt

I don't feel represented by any of the parties so as someone said above, I feel politically homeless

The only thing I really see with any common occurrence is the corruption of politician's on both sides, which disparages me even more

I am true to myself. I believe in equality, fairness, peace and not starving children to death. That might cause some to label me as a leftie, but I prefer to think of myself as just a decent human being. Unfortunately that seems to be very unpopular these days when the choice is between one party that lies just a little to the right of Margaret Thatcher, and the other party who make Attila the Hun look leftwing.

I'd say we are both centre left or right, depending on the issue/topic at hand. Unlike the US, most people don't identify others by how they vote.

But in 99% of cases, we're always near the centre, where the compromises & the growth happens

Centre left I think but my views on some issues might be considered to the right/conservative.

I don't get people who are right wing on every issue or left wing on every issue. It feels like once they pick a side they feel they have to stick with it.

I think us centrists often get accused of being wishy washy or sitting on the fence.

Personally I believe there is good and bad in both left and right wing politics. I believe we should take the best from socialism and capitalism to create as fair and equitable society that still allows those who can excel to do so and be rewarded but pay their dues to help look after the less fortunate. I do not believe in either communism or facism.

I always did like that one scene in Peaky Blinders…

Tommy Shelby; “Since I’ve entered politics, I’ve learned that the line doesn’t go out from the middle to the left and the right - it goes in a circle. You go far enough left, eventually you’ll meet someone who’s gone far enough right, and reach the same place.”

Yep great scene - although that is a well known political history concept, ie politics drawn as a circle rather than a linear spectrum. My A Level history teacher used that when comparing Hitler with Stalin (which was longer ago then I care to think about!)

Hence "almost".

Many centrists and "both side"-ers are covert right wingers who don't want to say they're right wing.

I'm not saying political wings are binary and you're either "with us or not". But the above happens very often.

'Almost always' implies a very large percentage, that's nonsense.

If many centrists are covert right wingers, does that mean that many centrists are also centrists? Or many centrists are covert left wingers?

Left of centre through personal life experience

The thing that really astounds me is all those right wingers who like to crap on about people being woke and communist, almost as if they are victims of some terrible oppression instead of them just being called out for being self obsessed dicks who don’t care about anything except their next holiday, trip to the 19th hole, share portfolio price, tax avoidance scheme, workhouse construction project (fill in as necessary!)

Maybe I am a fool but I still believe in helping people to find their way out of poverty and oppression for the good of all of us as a society

I've said this for some time but those who like to use 'woke' as an insult do so against utter tossers who like to sit on their perch and preach to others. The left then come back with something about racism blah blah. It's a classic example of those very people believing only their way (in this case definiton) is correct.

People use "woke" as an insult because it's not longer acceptable to be openly racist, so they vent their frustrations at those who are "aware, especially of social problems such as racism and inequality".

I don't consider myself left or right. Personally I think it's too simplistic, the political compass seems a bit better, left/right, authoritarian/librarian.

I find it strange that some issues such as climate change, are considered left. Surely this is just science and for the good of everyone.

The current right wing government in the uk are only concerned with extracting as much wealth and power from ordinary people and giving it to those at the top. But that isn't a true definition of right wing to me.

Here's the proof

It's not my definition though, it's the dictionary definition.

Why else would someone use "woke" as an insult?

We're not gonna through all this again.

I don't personally use the word but I'm telling you what people mean by it. Do you know how a definition is defined??"

Many ways, including observation of usage in practice. Definitions are fluid. Words like awful - it used to mean, to fill one with awe. Gay, happy.

People do, in fact use the word "woke" implying that their political stance is invalid, quite often opposing those who are working towards social justice. It's become a right wing snarl word to try to belittle people who disagree with them.

Lol. I do.

People could consider the definition of the words they use, if they don't want to be thought of in a certain way. Maybe.

You're doing nothing but proving the point I made. Cheers."

Glad to help.

I have no sympathy for people who get upset by this though.

Anyone using word which essentially means "not racist" as an insult, then getting upset when it's pointed out that it kinda makes them sound like a racist, only has themselves to blame.

To me it seems like there's a fragmentation of language. Depending on which group you're in, woke either means aware of injustice or whiny sanctimonious moron.

When a word can be used and it's interpreted in such vastly different ways, I think it's time to consider retiring it. Clarity is important. At least to me.

Fair enough.

It's like "snowflake", used to mean someone who gets easily upset. Now seems vastly different.

I think now it mostly means "left wingers who disagree with me"

It becomes pointless I think.

A lot of language has been turned like this to become less useful. Just another insult to hurl out. Personally I feel it's a deliberate tactic by some political groups to alter political discourse.

I'll do what I do and believe as I believe. The terms that people attach to me are shorthand only.

"I don't consider myself left or right. Personally I think it's too simplistic, the political compass seems a bit better, left/right, authoritarian/librarian.

I considered myself left because when I look at most of my values, that's where they fall on the spectrum "

I just filled out the political compass test and it gave me left librarian. Judging by the questions, it was a US site, so might be different if it was a British or European based survey.

That's prompted me to also do the test. Maybe my result surprises a few people:

Economic Left/Right: -2.0

Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.72

P.S. as we are all “swingers” I wonder if all the sex related questions on page 6 skewed the results

Glad to be considered “woke” if it implies that I hold an opposite point of view to ERG worshipping libertarian right wingers who seem to have lost all sense of what society means or what used to be commonly held moral values.

I think the point is more that there is (maybe since Brexit) an inability to get a straight honest conversation about what we want for the future and that it has become easier to hurl lame insults then answer questions whether in public or private life and so we end up with short term or no planning and just emotional reactions because your side winning is more important than truth.

I also realise that I am as guilty of flinging the barbed comments around as anyone but the difference is that I know I am right

Does that put you somewhere on the professional ladder (or at least one of those footstools on sprung castors) which is coming in for so much stick on a concurrent thread?

Im probably centre right and I agree with someone from an earlier post, the country has swng too far to the right.

I have no idea what possesed the Labour party to believe that Jeremy Corbyn was their best chance at the polls, no wonder they got a thrashing.

I'd like to see a labour government at the next elections as we can not carry on in this same direction and need to be pulled a bit to the left.

I'd also like to see proportional representation across the whole of the UK for a General election.

Jeremy Corbin was popular with a large number of Labour supporters. Unfortunately he didn't have the showman like TV image which Prime ministers, ever since Harold Wilson, have tried to cultivate. Acting the buffoon certainly endeared Boris to a great many.

As I have said before, Labour's worst enemy is its name. It is a tragedy that they didn't change it to 'Democrats' when the chance existed.

Why would people vote for something which sounds like hard work and penury when they can vote for an alternative which subtly implies that they can keep everything they have earned?

Corbyn did really well for his first election. Made huge gains and did well for the party.

Then the establishment worried there was change coming, and slaughtered him with a sustained media campaign.

The system exists to serve itself and will never allow any real change. Which is why I think we're stuck with the Tories, or at very best, a slightly less shitter version with a centre right Labour (similar to New Labour).
