The book is due, so, while government, including Johnson and Hamcock himself were standing at their podiums in January 2020 - claimg that COVID would be nothing more than a "bad cold" while Italians were dropping like flies.
That former Health Secretary Matt Hancock says he was warned 820,000 people in the UK could die from Covid two months before the country went into lockdown.
Is this to sell his book or like others, is he trying to whitewash himself clean of the wrong decisions and failures taken? |

Figures indicate 212k people in the Uk died with Covid-19.
It is reported he will donate all proceeds to NHS charities and causes supporting dyslexia.
He might be disliked, but he seems to have a highly motivated and skilled PR team behind him at this point in time.

So if we'd gone into lockdown sooner all those complaining about loss of freedom's, conspiracy blah blah blah would have just started all their bullshit earlier.
I'm not saying that the government handled the situation well but I can't think of any country that handled perfectly without criticism.
But as a government they should have been contingency plans in place for this kind of situation, which I know that there is/was.
But with Trump in the whitehouse at the time I genuinely believe that our "leader" was swayed by his lack of reaction.
As for Hancock I don't believe he would have intentionally and with malice let hundreds of thousands of people die on purpose.

I took it this was expected toll if nothing was done, however, after a delay and observation of events in Italy.
Finally, there was mitigation and introduced lockdowns- but is it not now accepted that was to the cost many of the 200,000 lives?
Eg, hospitals dumping into Care Homes? |

No, that's not accepted. How many reports have you seen that examine what would have happened if the hospitals hadn't 'dumped' people into care homes and had instead kept them in isolation? Where's the detailed analysis of how the NHS would have coped with that level of workload? |

National deaths are recorded and publicly available on the ONS website. If you want a 'no frills' overview just look at the total deaths in England and Wales over the last 10 years and focus around the difference in 2020 compared to all the other years. |

Decisions made in respect to COVID were 'Political' and Health.
Matt Hancock was a member member of Parliament and a government minister at the time.
Is this the data set you refer to FCC?
I see a jump in the numbers, just to clarify as I'll probably be accused of posting BS. The figure Hancock was referring to was if nothing was done to control spread - lockdowns, masks etc.
At first, the delay in LD1 and Care Home scandal caused significant rise then the Christmas/ New Year fiasco following, I think was LD3 which felt like forever.
No doubt another rise this Winter from Cold weather.

Makes you wonder where the extra 30,000 came from between 2014 to 2015 doesn't it? There's a report on the ONS mentioning them as 'excess winter deaths'.
The NHS has been recording quite a lot of deaths as due to Covid if the person had Covid at the time of the death, even if it wasn't the actual cause. That probably explains why the number of 'Covid deaths' reported in media is a lot more than the difference between 2019 and 2020.

There's a noticeable jump 2018, I thought of the Beast from the East but that was 2019.
Not looked too far into details but assuming this is calendar year, not April to March?
Without getting to far into to shaking the COVID deniers into action:
Although many did not directly die from COVUD itself, stretched services from the NHS overloaded with COVID patients meant others didn't receive the attention they needed and consequently but indirectly, died of other causes.
I did hear this was one reason Excess Deaths figures were to be used as a catch-all as it could not be fully determined whether having COVID had a direct link to demise.
Would there have been such an uplift if hospitals were not dealing with a high number of COVID patients?
This Winter's figures will be curious as those that cannot afford decent heating due to Energy pricing, leading to premature death. Although it seems COVID numbers are down, there is many morè in hospital with influenza of which a number of these will die. |
