The current Conservative incumbents conflate hard work with productivity, which is silly.

I have personally never understood why higher education is not provided “free” to those who will enter into a contract with state for a minimum period (say ten years). Nurses, Doctors, CPS, HMRC, Local Government etc.

Education generally is the root cause of the productivity issue in this country and yet the current Govt chooses to try to squeeze even the pips of the fully ripe lemons.

Higher education is a con. How many young folk in call centres and in run-of the-mill admin jobs have degrees?

Certain jobs that say they require degrees, like nursing, are already subsidised. It would be better to get rid of this silly notion of loans for all and make entry requirements far far higher than they are now.

Too many stupid people getting wasting time studying pointless courses.

I think a better educated population is a good thing, sure, some people struggle to get jobs that use their degrees right away. And there could be some improvements in the education system from top to bottom. But I definitely thing it's better for society to have people educated to a higher standard.

You/we are of the age when you could still get a grant as a student. Now it is loans.

I agree with OP that there are essential jobs that the country needs people to do or the country grinds to a halt. So those courses should come with a grant (not loan) that is free as long as you provide the skills you have to the state for a period of time (10-15yrs) otherwise it must be paid back.

The obvious ones are nurses, doctors and teachers. There are clearly more.
