An American actor called Kanye West has raised a stir at the Paris Fashion Show by wearing a T Shirt with With Lives Matter written on it. Is this a marketing ploy, attention seeking or just plain bad taste?

All over the news ...

In academic terms: he was trying to create awareness, as a Black man, of some dystopian future in which white people and white culture may become marginalised due to society's ever-increasing "wokeness" and cultural diversity.

In layman's terms: he's trying to create as much shock value as possible for attention.

This is not new for Kanye and it won't be the last ~controversial~ thing he does. I wouldn't pay much mind.

He skirted the same controversy when he wore a 'MAGA' Trump hat. He knows what will get him clicks anyway.

It’s PR stunt after PR stunt with him. He should just let his music do the talking but he’s completely washed as a rapper, his last great album was 2010. His last 3 albums have been trash. He’s becoming more and more irrelevant

Anyway, I don't think anyone takes Kanye seriously, although his actions can be quite damaging to the young ones who maybe view him as a role model (as people often do with all celebrities)

That was naughts and crosses and was adapted from a book that had been around for years but lots of people said it was written on the back of black live's matter but it was well before that movement started.

I'm not sure he makes anybody look bad to be honest. Mental health issues are personal to the individual and manifest themselves differently in everyone. Being mentally unwell does not make someone an arsehole at all it makes them unwell.

He's a rapper, not an actor. And he's a prick.

He's very good at attracting attention and was a big Trump supporter and said some troubling things about sl-very. Not really news.

There are far more intelligent and nuanced rappers worthy of the attention.

It’s attention seeking, and a poor form of it.

If he believes Black Lives Matter is divisive, why wear an outfit for the white equivalent?

He will alienate a lot of people who love his music.

He also probably isn’t aware of a far right movement in the U.K. using the term “White Lives Matter” in order to recruit “normies” as they call them.

This movement particularly idolise Hitler, deny the Holocaust exists and think repatriating all of us who aren’t white is the best option for this country, they use very derogatory terms to describe interracial relationships also, there’s a lot.

I call absolute bullshit on that. I am very much of the opinion that we are all human beings and totally equal. No matter colour, creed or sexuality. None of this has any effect on how I live my life so don't care regardless.

However I do have a white lives matter t-shirt. Mostly bought to piss off my uber progressive niece's. But also as a protest that we are spreading a message that white lives don't matter as much as our black cousins.

We will look back on this message in years to come and be just as ashamed as we are about white apartheid in Africa and historic atrocities in the US for example

We're not spreading that message though, are we? I have literally never heard someone in support of BLM state that white lives don't matter. And I doubt you have.

However, I presume you're aware of the stats regarding Police brutality towards black people? When people of colour object to that, do you complain that some white people have been brutalised too?

When you see people trying to raise funds for cancer research do you object that there are other diseases too?

When you go to a birthday party for someone, do you complain that other people have birthdays too?

I'd recommend having an intelligent conversation with your nieces, rather than wearing a t-shirt deliberately intended to cause hurt. That's just weird.

Sorry... wait... cousins?! It's still 2022, right?

What exactly are you calling “bullshit” on?

Because what I said is true, a certain movement is using the phrase in order to recruit “normies”, those are their words, not mine.

If you’ve seen any stunts on the news about “White Lives Matter” banners, that’ll be them.

Personally I think anyone who believes “all people matter” wouldn’t own a shirt of either, because by doing so and then claiming that one is divisive, it’s contradictory.

You do realise there are more races than black and white, right? So how is your white lives matter shirt any different to the black one? It still excludes people, so essentially you’re doing the exact same thing as the people you’re supposedly against.

Was the “All Lives Matter” or “No Lives Matter” shirt sold out?

Right firstly I feel as tho this is being twisted out of hand and I'm being made out to be something I'm not.

Police policy is definitely racist towards black people with stop and search for example. This NEEDS to change. That said statistically the demographic of knife and gang crime in London for example is mainly within the underprivileged black community is it not?

I don't give funds to cancer research fundraisers on the street because they get commission from donations as do the people above them and above them. I prefer to give straight to a charity.

Birthday party comment is nonsense. Won't justify that with a reply.

Hurt is not the intention. Debate is. Let me put this to you. Facetiously. We are outraged when a white man "blacks up" and portrays a stereotype. Rightly so.

Why has the movie white chick's never had the same outrage? Black men whiting up and playing a stereotype of the dumb blonde?

Probably because “white face” doesn’t have decades of deep rooted racism where white features were mocked and made into theatrics and therefore considered “ugly”.

Or probably because white face doesn’t stem from captured West African sl*ves being used and displayed for the pleasure and amusement of others.

I think you need to re read my post. You seem to have read it or at least read what you wanted to in order to take offence.

Where did I use the term “all”? And surely if I said what you imply that would include Kanye & Candace would it not?

“He also probably isn’t aware of a far right movement in the U.K. using the term “White Lives Matter” in order to recruit “normies” as they call them.

I said a fat right movement is using the phrase in order to recruit “normies”, again those are their words, not mine. I didn’t say all people who use the term are far right, I was referring to a specific movement that I won’t name for obvious reasons. If you’re not a part of that movement I wasn’t talking about you.

If I walked into road signs like he does I'd have a few head issues.

Like most celebs who have alot of time on their hands dreaming up their next pantomime stunt seems to be their alternative occupation.

Again it becomes more about the celeb than the cause.

It should be about looking at the soul of a person not the colour.

We will look back on this message in years to come and be just as ashamed as we are about white apartheid in Africa and historic atrocities in the US for example "

You've missed the entire point of BLM. It's not that all lives don't matter, it's that police brutality towards black people in the US is so bad that black lives are seen as worthless. Until they're not, until they're treated equally - Black Lives Matter needs to be seen and heard.

"He also probably isn’t aware of a far right movement in the U.K. using the term “White Lives Matter” in order to recruit “normies” as they call them.

This movement particularly idolise Hitler, deny the Holocaust exists and think repatriating all of us who aren’t white is the best option for this country, they use very derogatory terms to describe interracial relationships also, there’s a lot.

We all agree with you it is disgraceful and things need to be done. But I will not listen to a party that preaches equality but is hell bent on creating a segregation between people with its stereotypes of all white people as more privileged than black people are and i certainly will not tolerate them destroying my country's history because of something that is going on in America. We all agree racism has to stop but their methods of achieving this is without a doubt the wrong one

In America BLM has been associated with many scandals involving it's leaders enriching themselves. It has also promoted far left ideas such as 'defunding the police' which has led to a huge increase in violent crime when adopted by US cities. Kanye actually said that BLM was a scam, which based on the evidence in the US seems reasonable. He is far more intelligent than most of the celebrity dimwits who believed the hype.

I suspect defending the police doesn't mean what you think it means.

Please tell me if I'm wrong. What's your understanding of the phrase because most people I've seen mention it in a negative way haven't got a clue of what it entails.

Oh I know what it means.

It's a badly worded phrase in all honesty. It should use 'reallocate' rather than defund.

It's a 60 year old theory that statistical back up. The bulk of money is spent in the wrong way and is focussed on dealing with crimes after they happen and not prevention methods.

It's been used successfully in some areas of the USA already, long before BLM were around and contrary to the belief of some it doesn't in any way mean stopping funding the police. Just spending money in more positive and beneficial ways.

There's plenty of evidence online to show it works.

I think it may be that your kind of people never had a problem… did you consider what the colonised races thought of the colonial victory songs?

Not sure why I would choose to wade into this forum debate, as I’m white and think all lives matter…. But not that it should diminish the simple fact for the past dunno…. ThousandX years, there has been human conflict.. and the past 400 years has seen the “European” absolutely obliterate cultures and races in the name of “crown” or “god” is a shocking aspect of the human condition that should ultimately be recognised and discussed. It is not to shame the past, but to frame the future.

Just hoping those aliens come down to set us straight before Putin or Kim Jong-Un get too frustrated because their not getting laid and command one of their minions to push the button….

Most of our historical leaders were racist, our societies wealth was built upon exploitation of others ..

Recognition of and acceptance of the wrongs of a nations history where that has been either ignored or changed is a good thing, we don't live in those times and being educated about them is the right thing to do..

As for no one having a problem before, perhaps look at the abolitionist movement..

You've missed the entire point of BLM. It's not that all lives don't matter, it's that police brutality towards black people in the US is so bad that black lives are seen as worthless. Until they're not, until they're treated equally - Black Lives Matter needs to be seen and heard.

BLM is a movement. Not a party.

How is it destroying your country's history? Toppling a statue?

I stand corrected. You are right. It is a movement. I'm sorry for wording it wrong. You've just proved my point. Our history is nothing but a statue to you. Because you haven't bothered to actually read any history of our country and get the facts. You just jump on the band wagon.

Get off your high horse. It was a question. How is BLM destroying the history of the UK? Which "facts" have I apparently not read. Not that you know a damn thing about me.

I'm sorry if I caused you any offence. I spent ages writing out a long reply then just abbreviated it because it was too long so might have come across blunt. I thought you were being sarcastic with me by saying the statue remark but maybe I was mistaken. Since these protests, that had nothing to do with us, I have seen countless interviews on the TV and online where now all our historical leaders are being accused of racism and our national songs should be banned like rule Britannia for example. No one had a problem with these things or people before is all im saying

Most of our historical leaders were racist, our societies wealth was built upon exploitation of others ..

Recognition of and acceptance of the wrongs of a nations history where that has been either ignored or changed is a good thing, we don't live in those times and being educated about them is the right thing to do..

As for no one having a problem before, perhaps look at the abolitionist movement.."

Firstly I apologise again for bad wording by saying "no one" in a previous statement.

Secondly I completely agree with you we need to be taught our history and learn from it. It just annoys me that it is always the things we've done wrong in the past that are taught and not enough time is spent on teaching the good we've done aswell

Just an aside of where progress has in my lifetime been made, I went to school in the 60s in Liverpool and it was never in the curriculum then just how and where a large part of the cities wealth came from ..

Some of the cities streets are named after rich merchants who dealt in the sale and transportation of none white people are part of the growth and history, I never knew that till I was in my teens..

Progress is it's now taught and the

Maritime museum at the Albert Dock is a startling and shameful reminder why that horrific part of our history shouldn't be ignored, regardless if facing such truths might make us feel uncomfortable..

They did. For example there was a campaign for over 20 years to remove the Colston statue from Bristol city centre.

It's not a new thing, the only difference is that it's in the media now.

Sorry bad wording again on my part. So are you saying that it's the media's fault it has escalated as it has? That is a genuine question, no sarcasm or sneaky jibe behind it"

The media played a role, but no, it's not the media's fault.

This has always been going on though. Just ignored by the media.

People did have a problem with these things and these people before. But they were dismissed. Colonialism and sl@very have always been problematic in the history of the UK. Not all of the National leaders. Not all of the songs. But there are elements which are a constant reminder to some of the past and leaving those out of history is "a whitewash". Just read up on how people in Bristol asked over and over and over again to have that statue removed. Politely, legally. And yet for 20 years they were ignored, talked over, dismissed. Surely you can see how that led to the Colston Statue being pushed into the water?

Yet you are only concerned over one part of history being erased? What about all the other parts of the UK's history which were not taught to anyone, not recognised for so long? There is room for it all.

Sure. People wear swastikas as Buddhist peace symbols.

Wearing a "white lives matter" t-shirt would be kinda weird though, as there's no other meeting.

In the case of the Colston statue. That's now in the museum in Bristol, so people can learn about him, what he did with his life.

White Lives Matter doesn’t seem to be an organisation yet, so the two cannot be compared.

I always thought that ‘Black lives matter’ was a shit slogan. It’s stating the obvious and divisive when togetherness is / was needed. From a marketing view, poor message.

‘I can’t breathe’ would have been more powerful.

I'm very sorry that they were dismissed and they certainly shouldn't have been. But do you agree with Winston churchills statue being desecrated in the aftermath and the call for all our historical figures statues to be removed aswell. I completely agree with you there is room for all history that is my point we cant just be fed snippets here and tit bits there.

You say I'm only concerned about one part of history being erased, which is not the case at all, but I'm interested to know what you think that is?

The white parts. It would seem. "

No not at all. When have I said that? What I was saying was that I dont agree with the destruction of historical monuments by people of any race and making out that they are doing it for a good cause. Half of the people tearing down that statue probably didn't even know who Colston was. Mob mentality that was encouraged by the BLM movement. Black lives do matter as everybody elses does no matter what the colour of their skin. Stop trying to twist things and put words in my mouth.

'Monument' - a statue, building, or other structure erected to commemorate a notable person or event.

You know there used to be statues of Adolf Hitler? There were memorials to Jimmy Savile. Is it just certain monuments that you think shouldn't be removed?

You don't need a monument or a statue in order to learn about, or to learn from history.

Pretty sure people are aware of historical figures such as Hitler, the Moors murderers, Fred West, Joseph Mengele, Nathan Bedford Forrest etc but wouldn't want a monument of them in their home town?

Removal of monuments that cause offence isn't rewriting or hiding history. It's simply recognising a change in acceptable 'idolisation' in society and identifying when it's time to stop objectifying those that aren't worthy of admiration and praise.

Surely you understand that?

Didn't say they were directed to. But the fact they were shouting BLM and waving banners stating they were doing it for the movements cause and the BLM senior figures never told them to stop is a bit odd isn't it.

There's a difference between not telling someone to stop pulling down a much reviled statue and encouraging others to do so..

But I think you knew that before you claimed it which looks strange..

Ah. You mean waiting decades for people in power (largely elitest, white, traditionalists) to debate things, tell the public that consultations are taking place and then do nothing?

Because that's what's been happening. When people have had enough of being ignored and marginalised they act. Such as knocking the odd statue off it's plinth.

"I always thought that ‘Black lives matter’ was a shit slogan. It’s stating the obvious and divisive when togetherness is / was needed. From a marketing view, poor message.

‘I can’t breathe’ would have been more powerful.

That is because too many white people saw it as a direct on them for some reason….

And anything that raises one side up must mean we are kicking them down!

Black Lives Matter….. as well

Black Lives Matter….. too

Black Lives Matter…. also

Why are you taking a white lives matter slogan as a direct hit on you?

Are you not taking the Black Lives Matter slogan as a direct hit on you?

No not at all. When have I said that? What I was saying was that I dont agree with the destruction of historical monuments by people of any race and making out that they are doing it for a good cause. Half of the people tearing down that statue probably didn't even know who Colston was. Mob mentality that was encouraged by the BLM movement. Black lives do matter as everybody elses does no matter what the colour of their skin. Stop trying to twist things and put words in my mouth.

The protests against the statue of Colston started nearly two decades before BLM was heard of..

What proof is there that they directed the people to pull the statue down?

Didn't say they were directed to. But the fact they were shouting BLM and waving banners stating they were doing it for the movements cause and the BLM senior figures never told them to stop is a bit odd isn't it.

There's a difference between not telling someone to stop pulling down a much reviled statue and encouraging others to do so..

But I think you knew that before you claimed it which looks strange.."

Beg to differ

Isn’t it odd how a post about a publicity stunt by a wealthy black guy turns so serious.

A guy that wouldn’t want the likes of George Floyd anywhere near him. And probably have had him shot if he went anywhere near his mansion.

This thread has been depressingly predictable, but serves as a good filter I guess.

As for statues of racists etc, I say tear them down. It doesn't erase history, it just stops us celebrating the wrong kind of people. I for one have never learned about history from statues, and I doubt all the pearl-clutchers who defend them have either

Thats not pearl clutching. That's concern for the consequences of removing items of historical significance to placate a mob.

Yep. As a 'relatively local to Bristol' it's been discussed for years and nothing had been done because the council were busy 'discussing' and 'consulting' as councils do. They were also worried about the impact of having to change the name of Colston Hall as well as street names and other locations. Cost was a big factor to them, more important than the feelings and concerns of constituents.

But yep. The cries and accusations of 'you're trying to change history' were hilarious.

In the words of "Morgan Freeman" the only way to get rid of racism is to stop talking about it. Let's stop calling each other black, white or whatever descriptive word. Let's call each other by name.

He also hates black history month. The history of the USA is black history. He also makes a good point in asking when is white history month??

Which is fine if you're a rich, multimillionaire, Oscar winning Black guy that's widely admired by people.

A little trickier to take that stance if you're not and you're a teenager living in SW London on a council estate where gang culture and racism are rife.

But hey. Simplifying things and wishing for an ideal world scenario where everyone lives in perfect harmony (just like Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder did on a giant piano) will Jo doubt be an easy thing to accomplish.....

I’ve got one better, let’s stop calling each other man and woman and call each other people…

How will we describe people to the police? Or is that the only time it’s acceptable? By “not talking” about racism you aren’t holding people accountable and it is brushed under the carpet. Individuality is beautiful, from hair colour, eye colour, race, to culture, why should we have to stop recognising these things just to please a few fragile people who get uncomfortable every time there is a topic on race?

White History Month is every day of every year, we are taught it in schools.

The original Black History Month started for African Americans in the United States… you know, the minority. So why would the majority race in that country require a month for their history when it’s taught all year round?

Ok let's go there.. explain white privilege to rust belt people. We do not see color nor do we need the media telling us what is right. What is right is just being a decent human being. Race cards from both sides are ridiculous. No one here is "Entitled". We look at it as just media hype to separate people. I may be white AF I still love my friends and family I don't need a narrative to say otherwise.

When is it white history month… all the time! The fact that you need special lessons to find out about for example civil rights, or Juneteenth for example tells you what you need to know

The problem is that a lot of “black history” makes white people feel really uncomfortable…

As a British example.. you hear about Florence nightingale a lot but up until recently almost never about Mary seacole

I wish from my heart. The understanding of people no matter the races. When your life is on the line. You not concerned about their race thier religion thier political statement or sexual preference. If they have your 6 in a dire situation they are family . Brothers and sisters. Integrity of that person has more value than anything. Yet it's a sad concept the majority can't understand. Weird.

"In the words of "Morgan Freeman" the only way to get rid of racism is to stop talking about it. Let's stop calling each other black, white or whatever descriptive word. Let's call each other by name.

He also hates black history month. The history of the USA is black history. He also makes a good point in asking when is white history month??

Who gets uncomfortable on a topic of race’? everyone.

Why? because they are in their own little box getting fed injustices by the media. It empowers fools.

Talking about the media feeding injustices to fools, do the daft trump followers still think the election was rigged ahh you see you just the neighborhood troll as usual. Can't have a decent conversation just your ego involved.

Do you know any of these people? The ones who think Trump won the election? Fools that have been fed injustices by the media lol again trolling.let the adults talk. this was about kaynes statement yet you so incredibly incensed with trump. Why is that?

Incensed? Trump makes me laugh? He is very adept at feeding injustices to fools , you the one screaming trump. Not me.

It's interesting to see the amount of people having vested interest in an election that has no effect on the UK yet have such strong opinions. Sad sad sad

Your from Scotland ? Your excuse is ? Just to troll? "

your epeen must be excited it's a commonality with you. I engage your penis screaming trump why is that ?

"It’s always those who aren’t necessarily directly affected by racism who want it to stop being spoken about…

Let’s stop talking about anything that makes us uncomfortable that should make it all go away right.

Ok let's go there.. explain white privilege to rust belt people. We do not see color nor do we need the media telling us what is right. What is right is just being a decent human being. Race cards from both sides are ridiculous. No one here is "Entitled". We look at it as just media hype to separate people. I may be white AF I still love my friends and family I don't need a narrative to say otherwise."

Why are you asking me to explain it? It’s really simple though, if you’re the majority race in a country, you have privilege.

It’s the same everywhere, Nigeria, China etc.. not just white people. The sooner people realise that the better.

Why is a person from Scotland have such strung opinions about what a person from England thinks about an ex president from America?

In the name of equality perhaps???

No-one is denying the horrendous history of black suppression. Fuck sake until 1997 we had apartheid. But why are we trying to segregate in a time where we need unity?? "

Ask the people who segregated black and ethnic minority people for decades which meant they had to make their own history month and so on for their kids and their kids to know where they’ve come from.

But you can’t ask them, they’re dead.

Why does a UK person have to constantly ask about trump...same thing different regions. Unless you can say otherwise.

When is it white history month… all the time! The fact that you need special lessons to find out about for example civil rights, or Juneteenth for example tells you what you need to know

The problem is that a lot of “black history” makes white people feel really uncomfortable…

As a British example.. you hear about Florence nightingale a lot but up until recently almost never about Mary seacole m

Why would it make white people uncomfortable?

White guilt??

History is history. I had nothing to do or sympathise with these aforementioned atrocities yet I am made to feel guilty for them purely because the colour of my skin. This is reverse racism at its peak. Don't you agree?"

You know it's perfectly possible to feel uncomfortable without feeling any personal guilt, right?

I've always been shocked that people can't separate the two and simply acknowledge that the good old 'British Empire' has a lot to apologise for and feel guilty about. Was I alive then? Of course not, hence I feel no personal guilt or responsibility.

But I can sure as hell feel a sense of shame that the country I was born in did the things that it did, even though it was decades and centuries ago.

It's not about 'white guilt'. Just recognising that wrongs were done. Nobody is making you feel guilty and if you do so then that's 100% on you and not reverse racism in any way, shape or form.
