Thats over 10 percent of their locations. Another sign which way the economic wind is blowing.
Tim Martin was very bullish about Brexit and its benefits. Surely he knew a increase in staffing costs would result because of it. Its one of the reasons given for decreasing bottom lines. |

I imagine he thought his best friend Boris would give special dispensation for him to continue to employ "foreigners" on minimum wage.
But, as we know, BJ dropped "Tim and Nige" as soon as they'd served their purpose. |

What's for sale, the buildings or the pubs?
The local spoons here closed down about a year ago. |

Well the pubs will probably either be picked up by other pub groups in which case the staff will probably TUPE across or they will be turned into something else.
Presumably the staff won't have much of a problem finding work elsewhere given the shortage of staff everywhere. Which presumably isn't the fault of Brexit given the immigration figures. |

Wetherspoon have over 1000 pubs, so maths isn't your strong point.
They have had this strategy for decades. Underperformed pubs are shut and new ones opened where the prospects are brighter. |

"Tim Martin is a dreadful person. No sympathy for him at all. His staff, hope they find jobs!" . A dreadfull person is hardly going to build up a pub chain the size of Wetherspoons . The more important question to ask might be why he has succeeded where so many have failed. On a simplistic basis he provides value for money and delivery is consistent . A dreadful person would be unable to build up a chain the size of spoons. Selling a small number of under performing pubs simply shows that he has his eye on the ball and takes action promptly to resolve problems.
We should really be analysing the reasons why Tim Martin is so successfull. How msny people could replicate his success.
The pub chain even publish their own in house magazine.
Not only ie Tim Martin very successfull commercially, he is also a qualified Barrister and hails from Belfast .
We have all benefitted from the success of Wetherspoons |

Yes, you are right. I have a friend that's visited over 1000, including many closed ones!

dreadful: causing or involving great suffering, fear, or unhappiness; extremely bad or serious.
"there's been a dreadful accident"
Yep. Sounds like it describes Tim Martin perfectly. |

You must have copied and pasted the wrong Tim Martin on Wikipedia, he is from Norwich and has never been a practicing barrister (although he did get a law degree )

I can't stand the man, but are plenty of other pubs, chain and independent, under threat of closure? Energy, CO2 price (and it's knock on effect on drinks), rents...plus the fact come this winter, most of the old people that make up a large part of the daytime clientele won't be able to afford to go to any pub. |

I was going by the number of 300 given on the Sky News. Here is the link
https://www.google.com/amp/s/news.sky.com/story/amp/wetherspoons-puts-32-pubs-up-for-sale-as-food-and-labour-costs-rise-12706975
Here is the quote from it that I used for my figure of over 10 percent.
The pub chain, which has around 300 pubs and hotels in the UK and Ireland, said it made the decision because it was at risk of millions of pounds in upkeep and increased wages. |

Well I hope that the staff can find other jobs, maybe even better wages so they tempt other spoons workers to change career. As for Tim Martin, it would be absolutely delightful if the c*nt went bankrupt. |

Very much doubt he would go bankrupt. Like most savvy business people, his wealth would be in his private name and Weatherspoon will be a owned by a limited company, a different entity.
Remember Sir Philip Greene, taking out debts in the Arcadia group name and paying his wife £1.2 billion dividend. |

"dim martian .... always childish, always complaining ... he's best ignored"
I did wonder why a guy in the hospitality business would be so pro Brexit. After all his business benefited from the free movement of labour hence keeping staff costs low.
In 2019 he was saying Brexit would bring his costs down. In 2021 he was saying government should consider a reasonably Liberal visa scheme to allow foreign workers to relocate to the UK. Now staffing costs are too high.
Seems to be all over the place. Likes to say things to get his mug on the media, it seems. |

He said he supported brexit so that the government could reduce or remove workers rights, so he could reduce his staffing costs. |

Might still happen. Truss promised to scrap the remaining EU based laws that protect workers (and the laws the protect the environment), by the end of 2023. |

But the main problem in hospitality is getting staff. So if you treat them badly they go somewhere else. I have friends and relatives running hospitality businesses and they all say the same thing. |

It's a plc, sales are down profits are down and the share price has halved in the past 12 months, can't see the renumeration committee being too happy. |
