Lots to unpack about Somerset House hosting an event called Black Lives Matter festival but one question I am thinking about today as we rapidly approach Black History Month () is why has everything to do with resistance to anti black racism now been attributed to BLM? like it feels lazy and offensive?
I’ve been into schools and spoken to people and all everyone thinks about when it comes to anti black racism is BLM? |

It probably is lazy branding. Part of the challenge of any education by hashtag that is constructed in a maximum of 128 bytes and consumes barely seconds of the recipients consciousness. Is it progress that link is being drawn? |

I think in many ways the link is possibly a good thing. But I also feel like it overlooks the ways that racism impacts people in many other ways. And the way that it doesn’t just look like the obvious.
And the worst of the event is that they’ve taken something that comes from resistance to terrible terrible racism and turned it into a festival for profit.

"I saw the Twitter post and all the comments were negative
If they want to have a blm festival why not, leave them to it if it’s not for you "
The name, blm fest is offensive imo. I mean, I am not gonna go. And I am sure they will still have it. But I also think that the event getting this far is a reflection of people having such little understanding of what Black Lives Matter as a cultural movement was really about. Because why would you commercialise something about pain, something that is resisting a specific type of racism and do a festival pretty much that has nothing to do with that? You know? Idk maybe I woke up on the wrong side of bed |

Oh sorry I think I misunderstood. I thought it was a good thing? It’s just bringing people together about a cause right?
Didn’t the BLM movement (someone within it I should say) buy a bunch of mansions with donations? That’s not cool, but I’d hope a few bad apples don’t ruin the message
Same with this. Someone will turn a profit, but if it helps spread the message, and puts some cash in artists/performers pockets, that’s a good thing no? |

Yep I can understand that. And it was bound to happen. And the monetisation of it then can be used by people to choose to "buy it" or not buy it. Guess it depends if there is enough credibility in the organisation that "all proceeds go to a good cause" or if its considered a bunch of celebs using the brand to further their own cause...which is probably highly likely. Can awareness and education of racism be fun? I personally feel that industrialising it will be counter productive in a very short space of time but admit I'm no expert. |

Capitalism co-opting, diluting, and making money out of radical social movements? Well I never.
Cynicism aside, yes, I share OPs srnse of discomfort. As with the sanitisation and commercialisation of Pride, etc. |

Not that my opinion is relevant… but…
The BLM “movement” (for want of a better word before I’ve had caffeine) was important and impactful because I think it was visceral in response to such violence. The symbol alone I felt was powerful. It opened up a lot of conversations that I was invited into in a way I don’t think racial issues have ever been before.
From a black family on our estate basically saying they hated it & would judge anyone displaying the symbol, to a black lady I know quite well calling out every white person and demanding our reasons for not being allies. And many many calmer interactions in between. In a weird way it felt more inclusive (yes I see the irony) and definitely made me look at some truths about myself even.
I think adding “festival” to the end of it waters it down. By all means a race festival would be awesome, but for me I think keep BLM raw and painful.
Like I say I’m sure my opinion is unnecessary & possibly confused. |

Perhaps blm is moving in the direction of those "super" charities like oxfam (other charities exist) which demand charity from the public and volunteer force whilst paying a ceo 250k a year to professionalise and get more people to put a pound in the pot. Most people couldn't tell you what oxfam does any longer or why, but have their conscience salved by the 2 seconds it takes to put a pound in the pot.
"oh yeah blm is important and meaningful to me... I saw stormzy at blm2002 dontcha know" |

I guess any movement built around progress can’t focus on pain and suffering forever. At some point you need to take the time to celebrate and cheer for the progress.
That’s not to say the job is done either. There’s more profess to be made, but maybe a nice little music festival will be a nice change from protest and riots |

Why would you think your opinion is anything other than valid, based as it clearly is in honesty, engagement, snd openness? I agree: I think the protests in the US after George Floyd was murdered opened up a window for white people to really understand structural racism.
Unfortunately, that's a thread which,if pulled hard enough, brings down the whole rotten tapestry. Hence the media going so viciously after 'woke culture', the bloody National Trust of all inoffensive institutions being decried as a hotbed of dangerous radicalism for pointing out the sl*ve-trade origins of much of Britain's family silver, and cretins like Bad Enoch forging a whole slimy career from being The Right Kind Of Black Person for the Mail, Express, etc to use as cover for their profound and lasting racism. |

I really like your take on this. Yes taking something that is raw and powerful and turning it into a "festival" does dilute it. Hugely. |

They're generally the group that makes the loudest noise on anti-racism so people just assume that everything is associated with them for better or worse. I know there have been some controversies about their approach as well so it wouldn't surprise me if there is a media approach to associate everything with them to play into existing fears. It sucks, but it wouldn't surprise me. |

I like the idea but not the involvement of an American based organisation.
I would assume the lives and experience of black people in the UK are very different to those in say New York, California , Texas etc. of course there will be common issues also.
Is it a festival for black people only? |

If a bunch of racist cosmopolitan wankers want to have a festival that's on them. They'll probably just leave lots of litter all over the place afterwards like all the other arse holes who have festivals. |

Amazing.
I'm sure you're not the only person who thinks that striving for equality in society is "racist" (Those who are against racial equality are notoriously sensitive and easily upset). But you might be the only one who thinks littering has something to do with it.
This forum gets weirder by the day. |

I just feel like the name is weird at best.
Notting hill is probably a better event?
But will it be rebranded the #blm Notting hill carnival? "
It will if BLM sponsor it |

I had a good look at the BLM Fest site and it does make wonder the image or message it is giving out.
The tickets page has this message [Community tickets are for Black people only]
The community tickets are £5
and other tickets are £12.50 and £15.
It isn't excluding but it is dividing, not sure what I think about that, to be honest. mmmm |

Oh dear. Fuck me... Have a read of the FAQs on the website.
White woman with black child? "have a think why you'd take up a space for someone else"
Wonder how "black" you have to be to get preferential pricing.
Shame... I can't see an upside to creating further divisions but as its considered virtuous I guess they'll (organisers) get away with it. |

If correct then the BLM organization which is supposed to be against racism is actively being racist. If the same thing happened but only white people got the cheap tickets what would the response be I wonder |

I think they call it “positive discrimination”
It’s weird, it’s a multicultural country, we should be trying to be together. Not exclude.
And the part about white mothers not being able to join in with their black daughters.
Can you imagine being a little girl and trying to figure that out? |
