The press and politicians seem to be playing down rioting and fighting in Leicester which was once home to Gary Linekers father's fruit and veg stand at the market. Reports that unrest has followed a cricket match between India and Pakistan with fans from both sides battling on the streets. Is this in any way related to Brexit? |

Yes Tom. The tensions between India and Pakistan had absolutely nothing to do with the collapse of the British Empire and the fall of the Raj, leading to decades of strife between the two countries and everything to do with Britain leaving the EU in the last 2 years.
Obviously India was Leave and Pakistan was Remain...

Everything is about Brexit!!! Unless it's something positive of course then it's definitely nothing to do with Brexit "
Still awaiting something tangibly positive to come out of it at which point I will give it full credit. |

It's that what the 'gatherings' are all about?
I've been reading news reports, and they are all studiously avoiding any mention of the ethnicity of the gatherees, or any mention of what they might be gathering for. It makes it very difficult to understand what's happening when the press self-censor all the details. |

I'm interested in why this cricket match this time. But this feels akin to an old form derby going pear shape. |

"Why is the ethnicity important?"
The page I was reading was https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-62735675
That page didn't mention Hindus or Muslims, but it does mention hate speech and racist chants. I was under the impression that it was white people having a go at brown people. I now find that I was wrong. If they'd explained the ethnicities involved, I would have understood better.
The latest BBC News page does indeed mention Hindus and Muslims, making the story a bit clearer. |

"Who won the match ?"
India won the match. It was an Asia Cup match between the sides.
I understand that the celebrations of the Leicester Hindus (india) were over excessive, leading to street fights with the Leicester Muslims (Pakistan).
Tensions have simmered for days, and more violence between the two sides manifested itself last night. |

Probably an assumption by someone being familiar with the rivalry that the nature was obvious ... I would have gone to white racists. But now you mention it, that's the usual go to image. |

These Leicester Hindus and Muslims are pathetic. What kind of a world is it when a cricket match can cause this. Human beings need to bloody grow up! |

This isn’t about cricket. Albeit it was the spark that kicked it off.
If you need background Aina J Khans account on social media gives a little bit of context. She is the Guardian community affairs correspondent. Her account is a little one sided but gives some idea of where the tensions are coming from. |

First and foremost the violence and unrest is absolutely ridiculous especially at a time where we're mourning our Queen, whether you're a royalist or not. The police resources being used by this stupid behaviour from those in Leicester could be used elsewhere, today of all days.
This unrest isn't solely down to a cricket match. It's down to extremist Hindus goading and intimidating Muslims in the city. What added fuel to the fire was the cricket with India winning.
What's now making things worse is when fire is fought back with fire the problem will only escalate. The Hindu extremists are marching though areas of Leicester with a high Muslim population and the Muslims are now fighting back. Community leaders need to speak to those idiots and tell then to grow up. Of course off the back of a few individuals beliefs you'll get very many others who want to get involved for no other reason that to be a part of something, no matter how ridiculous.

Your right that this is ridiculous and community leaders will be important. You seem to blame the Hindus only. Are they solely responsible for this? I don't know myself hence the question but often neither side is blameless. Sad situation at a sad time |

Sorry, I re read my post and it does read as though I'm blaming Hindus but I'm not, I'm a Hindu myself. Both "sides" are to blame. There's never a right time to fight or be violent, but this really isn't the time. Self respect and respect for others gone out the window. |

I know the BBC reported race hate, but can that be true? Is it possible for members of one race to racially abuse other members of the same race? |

I think like other recent issues of social unrest ( Oxford street, Nottingham, South London - Dalston I think) it’s down played because of social media, Tik Tok in particular and the fear of copy cat events. The daily landings in Kent get little or no coverage either, not in the public interest can you believe? |

The daily landings are no longer news unless there is a new record, or some new stats. That's how the news works. |

Pakistanis and Indians always had a good relationship in the UK, yes there’s always a little scuffle over cricket, but normally return to being friends afterwards, there is probably a little bit more to this than cricket, maybe some outside influence stirring things up. I’m Pakistani and have loads of Indian friends never have a problem apart from healthy banta over cricket. |

Naa... naaa. It is sectarian violent racial hatred and the government and police will not stray from ignoring the criminality but will take you away if you hurt someone's feeling on social media. |
