What is there to discuss? Paddington clearly is an illegal immigrant, but he finds a sponsor family, and everyone lives happily ever after.

Peruvian bears aren't on the CITES list of endangered species, so they won't have any problems there.

One could argue that the Brown family are quite non-hypocritical. Unlike the residents of Martha's vineyard. The ones that shit the bed when 50+ illegal immigrants from Venezuela showed up looking for housing. Yes at least the Brown family took in and offered shelter to a South American immigrant. The near neighbours of Barack Obama weren't so quick to dole out marmalade sandwiches to their newly arrived diversity quota. Martha's vineyard is almost 90% white middle and upper class. They really could use some strength of diversity from the countries south of the border.

So thumbs up to the Browns....thumbs down to the openly racist rich folks of Martha's vineyard

He was welcomed by the locals, partly due to the novelty value but mainly as they are nice decent people.

Paddington liked the area so much as it was peaceful, very well run, a good place to live indeed. He mentioned this in letters home to friends & family and soon they started to arrive and settle also. The local liberal lefties thought this was marvellous as they loved the diversity and the ‘multi culti’ vibe that it gave. They often discussed over dinner how great it was and what a positive impact it was having.

More and more poured in with the inevitable strain on local services.

In time, every single one of the liberal lefties who still bang on about the benefits it brings had sold up and moved to an area NOT impacted by mass immigration. Funny that.

Judge people by what they do, not by what they say.

I'll be honest, if a stuffed toy wearing a hat, coat and Wellington boots started talking to me, illegal immigration would be the least of my problems.

The story of Paddington was to keep alive the evacuees stories from WW2. Of course, as with anything, activist groups and misinformed folk have twisted it to suit their own narrative.

Liberal hypocrites all over the news in America with this Martha's vineyard incident.

Wouldn't even keep their very small quota of undocumented migrants for more than 36 hours. They'll send southern border migrants to all sorts of shitholes around the country but when a handful show up in the most affluent part of the country....they use the military to ship them out. The lack of self awareness and stench of hypocrisy is astounding.

I think the thing that's winding up the anti-immigrant far right peeps is that some people they assume are "liberal" because of the wealth (which makes no sense), are also xenophobic.

It is not xenophobic to comment on legitimate issues from immigration, mass or illegal. There’s never been a ‘rant’. You can’t just dismiss things you don’t seem prepared to discuss or like as a ‘xenophobic rant’.

Again, and I repeat - AGAIN!

When have I expressed a single rant or fear? "

As I said earlier "Anyway, we know how this goes. You Jackal and Hyde it for the rest of the tread, we all have a chuckle and then it starts again the next day."

If you want to green arrow yourself. Feel free. But I feel we're just stuck with you contradicting yourself forever more.

Yes we do know how this goes - Seb asks you a simple question, "When have I expressed a single rant or fear", and you change the subject and refuse to answer the question. Then after a while you start accusing him of ranting and being afraid of immigrants again.

And it's "Jekyll and Hyde"

Actually, I asked him a simple question, which he avoided answering, by asking me to quote his rants about foreigners. Which I've done countless times. And on and on it goes.

Still good to have you on the merry go round.

It’s really odd and doesn’t make for a good debate. Adding nothing by simply ranting RACIST XENOPHOBE when I’m clearly nothing of the sort.

We are allowed to discuss things aren’t we?

It's pretty weird how the compulsion to "own the libs" is so ingrained that they are willing to lose elections for the sake of it.

I think it's just to make pole fun at some of the people who post up endless anti-immigrant and anti-foreigner rants.

Or people that raise legitimate issues that need airing. People that are fed up with liberal hypocrites and being lied to.

Do you have any examples of "legitimate issues that need airing", "liberal hypocrites" or what those people are being lied to about?

"

Law & order issues from mass immigration. Housing shortage - Afghan refugees refusing council housing in Scotland & Wales as they want to be among their ‘own community’ in London. Cost of accommodation for illegal immigrants. The brewing shit storm of tens of thousands of young men with little to do & no hope. Now, these are not ‘rants’ simply points put out there to discuss.

a few question to clarify

is the laws and order issues (and indeed housing) simply because there are more people in the UK. Or do you see it being disproportionatly increases because of immigration.

And the cost of housing "illegals" aka asylum seekers... Is that just the cost while reviewing their case? Are there other costs.

And similarly, the unrest point. From previous threads, that's from when they are in camps etc? Again waiting for a case review.

I ask because it seems your first points are about the pros and cons of immigration (well actually population growth).

And the latter ones are more around issues with the immigration process. Not immigration itself.

A harmless bear looking for a new home.

A Queen who embraced the fun in a sketch to celebrate her Jubilee.

A symbol to commemorate her death used by many thousands.

Unable to see your own irrational fears of similarly harmless individuals.

Rather than giving them an opportunity to contribute to a country that needs skilled and unskilled workers with safe immigration routes that would also offer them safety they need to be demonised so that they can be treated as if they weren't real people.

Racism, prejudice and xenophobia.

The actual story behind the flight to Martha's Vineyard:

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/02/us/migrants-marthas-vineyard-desantis-texas.html

Immigrants lied to by Texas authorities. Told there would be jobs and housing but just used in a publicity stunt.

Outrage was focused on the fact that these people were used.

They were flown using millions in state funds used to pay an airline associated with the Governor.

Texas has used $1bn federal COVID pandemic aid for border control: https://www.texastribune.org/2022/05/09/texas-federal-coronavirus-border-greg-abbott/

Both matters are under criminal or Federal investigation.

The immigrants were looked after by charities and volunteers who had no warning of their arrival.

They have since been moved to a military base to be properly housed and receive the services that are required to be provided by law. This was paid for by the state.

No hypocrisy visible in Martha's Vineyard.

Again, imagine a harmless, well intentioned, Paddington Bear being lied to used for publicity in the way that these people have.

Ignoring the fact that the UK has a proud history of welcoming immigrants, helping refugees. Adapting well to mass immigration despite the challenges that it brings. Actively promoting inclusion and diversity.

Why do an increasing number like to portray the UK as racist, accusing anyone that raises issues as xenophobic? Either they misunderstand things or have their own agenda.

I concur, do the phrases

‘Ban all immigration’

‘Immigration hasn’t contributed anything to British culture’

‘The windrush generation didn’t come here to help Britain but just to help themselves’

And lastly, does highlighting the abhorrent actions of one immigrant mean that ‘immigration doesn’t work’ sound racist or xenophobic to you?

For some unknown reason you choose to misquote. Quite odd really.

I have never said we should ‘ban all immigration’.

I didn’t claim that immigration has not added anything to British culture.

I quite rightly corrected an untruth that the Windrush people were not asked / invited to help rebuild Britain after the war but rather saw an opportunity for employment and a better life. They came to help themselves. I also added but you conveniently omitted that ‘there is nothing wrong with that’.

However, never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

The topic can be discussed without the generalisations that are lazily used.

Most refugees are Paddington Bear. Perfectly nice and doing their best to escape a situation that they find intolerable. One that we equally would.

There is no legal route to safety here. We deliberately prevent that.

To justify this behaviour they are demonised and blamed for all manner of negative activities and outcomes.

Legal routes would mean applying abroad and any "illegal" path being an automatic return for assessment abroad. It would also allow for better screening and could be coordinated with the activities of other countries.

Legal routes would allow UK job shortages to be filled with people who are both competent and in need of help.

A legal process would save huge amounts of money but would remove a political distraction to domestic failures.

The relentless negativity and victimisation is just unedifying.

Racism is abhorrent. I appreciate that as a white guy in a mainly white society I’m not best placed to comment but I ‘sense! there is an industry building here, where it suits the narrative and interests of some to claim racism when none exists.

People from other ethnicities can be just as racist as you are.

Preeti Patel and Suella Bravermann express that.

Just as you are part of the generation that pulled up the social mobility ladder they are pulling up the immigration ladder.

I can assure you that I can identify racism dressed as "concern for society". I have grown up seeing how it is expressed and vocalised. You do just that.

Please keep it real. I am not racist. I am not against immigration.

Now you are being ‘ageist’ . True colours coming out perhaps?

Can you explain the thread you recently posted that was rightly removed? "

Perhaps I was being the ‘devils avocado’?

"A harmless bear looking for a new home.

Demonstrated in multiple posts on this thread.

Imagine treating Paddington Bear in the same way.

But we shouldn't sweep examples of racism under the carpet. People who highlight these examples are often accused of having some mysterious "agenda".

Very real, and trying to play the victim yourself is risible.

I don not understand what reputation you feel that you are defending as your record of regularly posting prejudiced and racist views and refusing to engage with any alternatives to hostility and demonisation are clear to see.

They and write something more constructive on the subject and you may be believed.

I wonder what you meant by that phrase?

It is a circle, one being called a racist and the other a woke liberal.

See it all the time, the actual issues or ideas are never really discussed and it circles again.

I think the reason this happens is to win and too close down.

I think a lot of people would struggle in a real debate, or to discuss this type of subject without defaulting to stereotyping and labelling.

That is the internet for you...

The relentless negativity and victimisation is just unedifying."

I agree that a legal mechanism needs to be agreed and thought out, I can see so many positives for this, and I think it would actually help people see control and not the chaos of people arriving by small boat.

Providing a legal route and process should significantly reduce documents being destroyed, one of the contentious issues that is commonly used to express concern of how people are processed.

It wouldn't remove that issue completely but it would seep through to those making the journey that papers are needed and not to be destroyed as per the trafficker. I understand that people will arrive without papers for a host of reasons, those scenarios need a well thought out process that supports people in need and not as is now a reason to keep them holed up with no prospects of work and starting a life. The process also needs to highlight anyone who is trying to go under the radar and again, a process needs to be in place that can deal with those people too, again as you mention above.

If this happens, traffickers should see demand drop and that would be a good day for sure!

I think those measures alone would reduce the eye watering £5million a day being spent on hotels.

I believe we need stringent checks and balances at our borders, closing them completely isn't that, it encourages criminal activity and drives cost.

Yes you did, your last thread was right banned because you tried to blame all immigrants for he actions of one person "

What, no comment or apology for the series of misquotes?

Why do an increasing number like to portray the UK as racist, accusing anyone that raises issues as xenophobic? Either they misunderstand things or have their own agenda.

But we shouldn't sweep examples of racism under the carpet. People who highlight these examples are often accused of having some mysterious "agenda".

I wonder what you meant by that phrase?

Racism is abhorrent. I appreciate that as a white guy in a mainly white society I’m not best placed to comment but I ‘sense! there is an industry building here, where it suits the narrative and interests of some to claim racism when none exists.

Yes you did, your last thread was right banned because you tried to blame all immigrants for he actions of one person

What, no comment or apology for the series of misquotes?

No apology needed, I am glad to see you have been forced to tone down and stop posting your nonsense

No nonsense posted. Hoping to stimulate debate. Difficult though when bigoted people just rant in response and wail ‘racist’ ‘xenophobe’. Or worse, misquote in order (I can only assume) to mislead.

Your last thread was rightly removed, good to see

Yep.

And stop encouraging him! Ha. Last thing we need is more xenophobic threads.

Let's stick to the confused about brexit stuff and discussion of the latest Tory nepotism.

I believe we need stringent checks and balances at our borders, closing them completely isn't that, it encourages criminal activity and drives cost."

That certainly sounds plausible though not sure of the possibilities if setting up checks in other countries. Maybe the embassies could be used. Don't quite understand why it would stop them destroying their documents though. I assume they do it to benefit their claim so guess they would still do it for the same reasons. As said that's just an assumption. At least they won't be throwing their phones into the sea I guess. For the ones that continue to cross the channel, what happens to them? Presumably they still have the same rights that they have now

set the checks up near the places where refugees come from. That a) helps sense check their claims of where they come from and b) reduces their desire to travel long distances.

For the remainder manage them in Calais. Anyone crossing illegaly goes back there and to the back of the queue.

If Paddington was “really” from Peru you’d have thought you’d hear him bust out some Spanish at least once!! I mean… step on his toes and wait for the string of Spanish swear words!!!

Either that or make him play the panpipes!!!!

Foreign countries allow visas Tobe applied for at embassies. Why not refugee status assessments?

It will provide some local jobs and some reduction in refugee numbers for the host country.

In addition, costs can be reduced if multiple countries pool their resources. However, the UK no longer sees the benefit of that...

Imagine treating Paddington Bear in the same way.

But we shouldn't sweep examples of racism under the carpet. People who highlight these examples are often accused of having some mysterious "agenda".

I wonder what you meant by that phrase?

It is a circle, one being called a racist and the other a woke liberal.

See it all the time, the actual issues or ideas are never really discussed and it circles again.

I think the reason this happens is to win and too close down.

I think a lot of people would struggle in a real debate, or to discuss this type of subject without defaulting to stereotyping and labelling.

That is the internet for you...

Presumably they still have the same rights that they have nowset the checks up near the places where refugees come from. That a) helps sense check their claims of where they come from and b) reduces their desire to travel long distances.

For the remainder manage them in Calais. Anyone crossing illegaly goes back there and to the back of the queue.

I understand and agree with the principal but not sure of the practicalities. It might be the case that other countries don't want British checks on their territory and those that do may charge heavily for it. For the ones that still arrive illegally can we send them back? I keep hearing that it is no longer possible. If it is post, why is this opt not being used currently. Let me just sat again that I agree with the idea

Foreign countries allow visas Tobe applied for at embassies. Why not refugee status assessments?

It will provide some local jobs and some reduction in refugee numbers for the host country.

In addition, costs can be reduced if multiple countries pool their resources. However, the UK no longer sees the benefit of that..."

The following government link will take you to a page that you can then open the safe and legal routes information. What strikes me is the lack of how to. It is also very specific in cases but contains no general policy for anyone who does not qualify, which I expect would be the majority of people seeking asylum in the UK. It feels as though we can help, but to only those we want to.

my understanding is resettlement is for those who have been found to be refugees.

It's a nice cop out of the hard part.

And outside 20,000 Syrians, we run at c 750 a year.

However it does give an idea of what can be done if we were willing to take on processing outside of the UK.

There was something today at the conference from the new person in charge of this. I think they are sticking with the Rwanda plan and changing some laws. Not sure changing laws will put of those that arrive illegally in the first place. Again more work for the lawyers
