Somebody asked this at the end of another thread. Seemed like a valid question for a thread.
I think he became PM because he was happy to tell any lie to anybody at any time, unbothered by any sort of scruples or morality. I also think he was aided massively by his fake persona of the bloke who seemed like a bit of a laugh down the pub. |

1. Because the Conservatives got an 80 majority in the last GE.
2. Because the opposition had a far left terrorist loving antisemitic as the leader of their party.! |

Wasn't Johnson PM before that election? Not that I'm doubting your razor sharp political acumen. |

It was me who asked the question, and I asked it because I feel people don't always see a strategy play out.
How did Johnson become PM?
Why Johnson?
Who carved out his PM path, did he do it on his own?
Can we start with the above? |

I can give a summary as to how and the third question.
The second question will be my own opinion although and therefore subjective.

Don't even bother. Sums up the state of politics right now.
Short memories and an obsession with winning is what got BJ to where he is. There's no true political substance in his ascension to being PM. Nothing but celeb status made Johnson leader. The fact that the same dead arguments are being used by his supporters means most have learned nothing. Bringing up election results from years ago after a shitshow of governance says it all. |

The first and third questions are deeply linked Boris has always had an ambition for high office and was always willing to be adaptive in order to do it.He was known for allying with anyone to get further ahead.
To answer the first question we go to the brexit referendum where Johnson quickly became quite a public face in the leave campaign(which he expected to lose) He did this to promote himself further within the party and to the general public perhaps with hopes of riding it into a cabinet minister job.
However we never got to see how this would turn out as leave won the referendum (ironically his influence may gave been quite the contributing factor).Cameron resigned and Boris saw his opportunity and lunged for the top job.He could have been prime minister at that moment if he so wished however something likely occurred to him, likely how weak he would have been if he got the job now,his vagueness in the leave campaign would come back to bite him.
May appoints Boris to cabinet and he begins to see opportunity he sees the way the Brexit wind blows and sails with it.Later on he creates an alliance with the ERG and they launch their attempt to oust May it fails but May resigns anyway.
Boris is able to become prime minister against Jeremy Hunt but Hunts surprising support would indicate dire things for his future.
The Why Johnson in my opinion is best answered by what I believe to be his political strengths. His often vagueness in many matters makes his actual position difficult to pin down and attack. His willingness to ally with anyone to achieve his goals is another |

I agree with you and you have captured it brilliantly.
I would however like to add my addition to the reason of why it was Johnson who was chosen to be PM.
As you mention, he is driven by the grandiose of success. He had become a public figure through TV, a welcoming, buffoon, relatable and the mayor of London.
The Leninist, Dominic Cummings had been skulking around the upper echelons of the conservative party, looking to reform the country and bring about the UK exit from the EU.
Cummings saw the opportunity to achieve through Johnson, he took it with both hands.
Johnson, then took a bite out of the hand that fed him, he tried to distance himself from the person that was creating the policy.... They have now, run their course

He is an exceptionally talented individual and had a great track record as mayor of London . He is also a true man of the people- as at one time his car was a 15 year old Toyota. His personality speaks for itself and the fact that he won so many red wall voters is a great endorsement of his communication skills. Probably one of the greatest politicians of all time. His 80 seat majority says it all.

Exactly this. The power of propaganda and the Conservative supporting media will get people to believe literally anything no matter how bizarre. |

MAGA
Get Brexit Done
- Cummings, Mandelson, advertising slueths will all tell you it's in the Slogan. Say a lie three times, 60% believe it true, 20% need massaging but your over the line.
Tell a few white lies, did it not work for Brexit itself, Red Bus, NHS £150m, Immigration.
Seed untruths, unfortunately many assume its true. Boris's Starmer comment is an example, its stuck because people hear it but don't seek the truth. That being the head of the CPS cannot directly interfere otherwise that would be corruption.
qAnon works so well for this very reason and who is Trumps bezzy blonde mate? |

Do it, deny it, deny it, deny it
If caught, apologise and put out distractions.

Yep.
There's a toxicity about British politics right now and this thread could've been a honest conversation about our democracy but people want to act like everything is fine. |

Not one of your best because normally it is a bit harder to identify whether your posts are satire or you actually believe what you type. In this case the satire is completely obvious. You need some new material Pat. |

It is amazing how some people keep repeating the line that all politicians lie and they're all the same. All that does is normalise having the worst of the worst in power.
Everybody lies. But there are degrees. There's a clear difference between a pahological liar like Trump or Johnson and most other people in this world. And we have now seen just how toxic the likes of Trump and Johnson were in power. |

The majority of people voted for brexit
