As I said in another thread the fact that the tories seem so myopic about investing in anything that future proofs the economy makes it astonishing that we haven’t become a third world authoritarian dictatorship….ooh hang on a minute…here comes the new prime minister chosen by 160,000 Tory party members out of an adult population of 53,369,083 which is less than 0.3 per cent of those who are potentially eligible to vote (call it 0.5 per cent for the sake of argument)…democratic choice? My arse!!! |

a confidence vote isn't going to happen unless huge amounts of tory voters contact thier mp's telling them they will not vote tory again unless the mp starts to vote against the government's pernicious policies. and that is unlikely. |

It did happen very recently but didn't go through. |

I did not vote for Johnson per se. He is not my MP. In fact those outside his constituency voted for the Conservative candidate not Johnson.
If they are unhappy about Johnson or the way the Conservatives do things then do not vote for them again. The people never chose the party leader |

Not quite. He'd already done that before he was PM. With Blair's blessing of course. |

Funny how Labour supporters want a GE like yesterday if the Conservatives change leader mid term. But when the boot is on the other foot they the first to defend the system.
Worth noting that since 1950 Britain has only had 4 Labour Pm's and only 2 of them actually won a GE. |

While many may not like the policies, we would see an exponential growth in competence if Labour got in combined with an exponential fall in corruption and cronyism. That would be a good start. |

I doubt a growth in competence would be quick enough, if anything I could see it going the other way for a while as Labour try to find their way.
It could make things worse in my opinion. |

No… but if her plans of tax cuts go through… she is going to end up under so much pressure I think she may call one "
especially come novemeber when marginal MP's are deluged with letter from those who voted for them, saying they have withdrawn their vote from the party. |

the gold sale still made billions at a a time when the country desperately needed finance to reverse decaeds of tory inflicted decline. it was a very shrewd move.
if a comparison was to be drawn then the destruction of gas storage facilities and by the tory government is now seeing the chickens comming home to roost along with every other species of bird, leaving the country little more than destitute. |

Setting up a working government takes time, that is why I'm saying a general election now will bring no stability or noticeable change in the short term. The civil servants will be doing what they are doing now, tomorrow but with a government trying to find their feet.
Other than having the chance to celebrate getting them out, I can't see the benefit. If I was labour, I would want the tories to stay on the coalface, I wouldn't want this poison chalice... |

Oh I agree. Nobody within the right mind would want the PM job right now. Which is why Truss does, she has no right mind! Sunak is too arrogant to think he could fail. If I was Labour I would sit back and let the shitshow continue. The Conservative party will take a generation to recover from this.
But the question wasn’t should they want a GE but what would happen if there was one.
There would of course be a settling in period but circumstances would dictate taking quick and decisive action. The Civil Service have all their briefing prepared for Ministerial changes anyway, little difference what colour tie they wear. |

You know what, a year ago I would have agreed. Heck, a few months ago. But now people are really starting to feel it in their pocket, and it is happening to them not other people, then I am not so sure. There us growing anger.
Then again, you could be right with almost half the country suffering from Stockholm syndrome! |

The country has been suffering for over a decade. They successfully blamed the EU, foreigners, Labour, Corbyn, Blair, foreigners again.
Can't see any of their latest self serving behaviours making any difference to people who voted for them the last however-many-times.
People have been convinced that this is as good as it gets and that they don't deserve any better. So much so that anyone who aspires to a better Britain gets hounded to fuck. |

Yes the “Tory faithful” might but they are not enough to carry an election and never have been.
Labour found this out with their own “faithful” when Corbyn was in power.
Boris has attributes Truss simply lacks.I don’t feel she’ll have quite the same pull as he did |

Nothing would change at all. I'd expect the transition to any new government to be absolutely seamless, just a change of middle management pursuing the same policies as before. |

How much did he sell it for?
What happened with the money?
What would it have been worth now?
How much did the track and trace system cost?
How much did the government waste of contracts for their pals?
Why did you still go on about the gold?

That's because the same discussion happens all the time. The Tories fuck up, rip off the country, line their own pockets etc etc. People get excited thinking that finally they'll get voted out. But they never do. |

Yes but they had Boris, who love him or loathe him ( personally think he was a power hungry oaf ) had a cultish hold on the base. Liz is going to have them reaching for the life jackets quicker than my knickers drop.
Doesn't matter which self serving narcissistic is at the helm. The Tory faithful will vote for their party no matter what.
Yes the “Tory faithful” might but they are not enough to carry an election and never have been.
Labour found this out with their own “faithful” when Corbyn was in power.
Boris has attributes Truss simply lacks.I don’t feel she’ll have quite the same pull as he did "
I guess we'll see, I can't see anything but another Conservative win and five more years. |

"there is only 18 months or so before a date is given for the nest GE. i can't see the current zombies turning things around in that time.
Doesn't matter. 100% guaranteed to be re-elected.
You know what, a year ago I would have agreed. Heck, a few months ago. But now people are really starting to feel it in their pocket, and it is happening to them not other people, then I am not so sure. There us growing anger.
Then again, you could be right with almost half the country suffering from Stockholm syndrome!

To be honest, you must have this on copy and paste. I think half your forum contributions are the exact same.
That's because the same discussion happens all the time. The Tories fuck up, rip off the country, line their own pockets etc etc. People get excited thinking that finally they'll get voted out. But they never do."
Every now and then they do get voted out of course. Would happen more often if the opposition got their act together. I guess there is an inherent problem with Labour though where it’s not in their interest for their core voters to do well. Most people as soon as they make a few Bob drop Labour. |

Classic. Blame some other party for people voting Tory.
The opposite of voting for the Conservative party, is not voting for the Conservative party. |
