Eastbourne (she/they)

The US House of Representatives votes 267-157 to codify same-sex marriage into law.

47 Republicans joined every Democrat in voting in the affirmative.

Good on you America!

I am guessing it still needs to get through the senate though?

A bold move. When the Tories did that over here, it cost them tens of thousands of members.

Hurrah for the representatives!

We'll have to see how it fares with the senators, but I'm optimistic. This looks to be the start of the US actually writing down the rights that people have, instead of just pretending that the Constitution covers everything they want it to.

And to think Jefferson said they should rewrite the Constitution every 20 years so that it wouldn't become antiquated.

Who could / would vote against it & why?

I still love the quote from Dolly Parton a while back now as to her thoughts on gay marriage.

“Let ‘em marry so they can suffer like the rest of us “.

After roe vs wade was undone on the basis that the 14th Amendment didn’t explicitly name abortion.. it was always going to be the religious right’s next target especially after Supreme Court Justice Thomas said they should….

You will still need 10 republicans in the senate for it to go to Bidens desk to sign it.. but the senate tends to be a more moderate place than the house

At the moment can’t past the Senate because only 5 republicans senators have come out and said they will vote for this….

In the meantime the house have done the same thing to try and protect the rights to contraception… again passed with Democratic Party votes!! So that is waiting for republicans senate support… or lack thereof!!!

And if you didn’t know just how far the republican religious right would go… in the stat of Missouri the republican legislators have just banned divorce is the woman happens to be pregnant!!

Apparently this is again a protective issue, no get outs even for violent relationships!!!

Some good news at last from that country. Quite confident that it will pass the senate.

What does codify into law mean? I thought all states could choose any nonsense law they like.

It means that you put into Federal law a court judgement so it just can’t be overturned…basically it sets a minimum standard that all states have to abide by and the only way it could be reversed would be if it was fully repealed

It takes the decisions out of the hands of the courts and put it into the national legislature

So for example same sex marriage isn’t actually law.. it’s came about as courts said you can’t stop it under anti discrimination judgements ….. which again were court cases that came about over how far the 14th amendment protects people in certain situations…

And now in the first show of what people actually think, in deeply conservative state of Kansas it was put on the ballot as to whether people should keep their abortion rights….

Yes won 60-40…. Despite what the conservative legislatures wanted to do, which was ban it!

This is going to shake conservative legislators up and down the country as they now probably know is it can win in ballots there then nowhere is safe! And abortion rights absolutely now became a midterm election issue!

If they can get it on ballots it will drive people to go out and vote…

The second Roe was overturned I think it became the #1 midterm issue.

that 60% is low compared to the average which I think is in the 70's.

But don't worry Fabio, I have been reliably informed that unlike every other country on Earth it is impossible in the USA for the government to do something the people haven't voted for (except for everything they have).

"Yes won 60-40…."

It was actually 'No' which won by about 59-41. A 'No' vote meaning, 'no, don't change the law, let's keep our abortion rights'.

This is even more surprising as 'No' is a much harder thing to get people to vote for. In large scale votes, 'Yes' wins more often than not, because people like a positive message.

It's a great victory for women's rights in Kansas, and I'm expecting it to be just the first of a whole load of such votes over the next few years.

I expect that we'll come to consider the striking down of Roe v Wade as being rather a good thing.

The really interesting thing is that the anti abortion side really… really tried to rig the vote as much as they could…

They had the option of putting it on the ballot on primary night or midterms night… they chose primary night hoping for a smaller turnout and hiding it!

They also wrote the question in a way to confuse people… yes to remove the right to remove the wording in the Kansas constitution

The fact that they lost and the turnout was almost general election numbers is going to be a huge worry for the Republican Party….

If abortion is an issue that turns out people for the midterms.. the democrats will not do as badly in November as we thought!

The economy, gas prices, and abortion rights and voting rights… SCOTUS May end up costing the republicans the house!

The worry is that the Democrats will do so well in the mid-terms that they decide to keep Biden as their presidential candidate for another 4 years. They might win both houses, but then lose the presidency.
