More than eight million households will start receiving the first of two payments intended to help with the cost of living from today.
Almost one in four low-income households in england, wales, scotland and northern Ireland will get £326, with the second instalment of £324 sent this autumn as part of the government's £37bn support package for those on means-tested benefits.
What do you think of this help from the government? I think that it is a good idea, especially now with cost of living crisis that we have  |

Each day the there is 46 million litres of petrol and 74 million litres of diesel sold each day for a total of 120 million litres of fuel/day. The 5p drop in fuel duty was more than paid for against 2020 prices by the time fuel hit £1.40/litre so everything over that is added income. Fuel is up by roughly 50 pence a litre in the v last 6 months which equates to 10 pence VAT. Multiply this by 120 million litres and the government are raking in £12 million a day in extra VAT compared to 6 months ago.
If we say that price has gone up gradually and averages at £6 million/day over the last 6 months and settles at £10 million/day for the next 6 that's a total extra income this year of just under £3 billion in VAT on just forecourt sales. This doesnt include the new fuel duty that's been added on pretty much all fuel used off road appart from forestry and agriculture(who can do use red diesel), the extra tax from higher fuel costs in every sector besides motoring, the extra VAT on all the raised prices for just about everything and the wind fall taxes on energy companies.
The government is raking in billions of extra taxes this year. They can afford to give some to the poorest, it certainly doesn't make them generous.

The help is essential. We're facing extreme times. The level of help is insufficient, coming after many years of negative wage changes, since the financial crash, which were not the cause of regular people but banks and government regulation and management of them. Targeting more the most deprived, means it also boosts the economy and is just humane and the right thing to do - it's not even something to ponder on. Nor does it mean that others don't get help. |

Rather than asking people if they think it is a good idea to 'help' the poorest in society, perhaps think more about what and who created the poorest in society, what/who maintains that yawning divide and why people don't earn sufficient to meet their needs without being shamed into paupery.
If I starve my dog...... will you all say how good I am when I eventually get him a tin of meet ......or better still teach him how to shop and let him have ownership of the can opener?

Well taken many decades but finally the penny is sort of dropping with the great british electorate or fingers crossed it might be ? that the selling off of our assets at knock down prices with the false promise of reduced prices due to competition and more investment and a reduction in our tax's ?? and of course as we now know that was all complete lies or rather should know ?? and the very slow realisation that whatever party is in charge how very little they now have control over anything and including the most basic things we need to survive as they have surrendered a large majority of it to so called market forces and the scary thing is that with the current lot in charge they are looking to introduce even more so called free markets to just about anything they can ?? and so the tax payer funded pay outs will have to get alot larger ?? but seeing nearly 50% of new universal credit claims are from people in work and we also spens £28 billion on housing benefit to private landlords etc etc ..  |

Self employed , living alone , no dependants equals no help even though I have done a rough calculation which with the rises in energy , fuel , council tax , water etc I am 3.5K a year worse off than last year. Wages are the same , disposable income is basically halved. |

I think we need to change behaviours, I hope those handouts reduce some of the burden people are facing.
The problem is this, how much can people take of being squeezed?
For example Sri Lanka just toppled their government in a peoples revolt because of economic mismanagement and incompetence

Sorry if it came across wrong it wasn't a reflection on everyone but I actually know people who play on mental health when all that's wrong with them is they are too lazy to go to work and want paying to sit at home playing computer games all day it really annoys me when there is actually real people out there who really do need help and suffer badly with depression and others that just milk the system... saying that your right this government don't help a lot of time your worse off working so I can see why many won't work and are forced to claim benefits any way they can |

Damnation is too good for them.
That said, as a member of the working poor, I won't deny the money will help me with my transport costs.
The first payment, for me anyway, is the equivalent of roughly five full tanks of petrol (about 50 days worth).
Obviously, if that's all I spend it on - and I really do need my car to work - the government will be getting a large chunk of it back.
Hopefully, they'll spend that chunk on reducing child poverty.

Pensioners are not getting £650 unless they are on a qualifying benefit. They are getting £300 Plus the cold weather payment. |

I rarely defend the Tories. But in fairness to them, they have their agenda to squeeze every drop of power and money from ordinary people, and transfer it to those at the top. Austerity, brexit, removing protesting rights, literally handing billions of public money to their millionaire chums.

The House of Commons Library has a report on food bank use that shows how the growth in use is related directly to when the Tories came to power, and for those who want to know, there are now 2570 food banks operating in the UK and in 2010 there were 56….now that’s what you call growth!  |

I'm sorry but I don't think you can comment on whether somebody is faking a mental health condition unless you have personally seen their medical records. People don't talk about their mental health because they are frightened of being told they are making it up and it's comments like this that adds to that. What fossil fuel subsidies are these?"
Between 2015 and 2021 £13.6bn to the fossil fuels industry. Split between payments and tax relief.
