What do you regret about Johnson going?

I regret that I never got to meet him on a walkabout, so I could tell him to fuck off. I'll just have hope for the opportunity to tell his successor instead.

Regret that after the circus dies down the Tories will resume business as usual fucking over British people to benefit their party donors.

If they're thick as pig shit, they might not be able to do as much intentional damage?

Perhaps the speech today is just a ploy to swerve the vote that was coming after the new 22 committee changed the rules to allow another vote of no confidence which means the person can't stand again for PM ..

He could stand again..

I regret not seeing the next Dominic Cummings bombshell! Let us not forget, he leaked and started the rot when Boris threw him out.

Dominic used Boris to ensure his Brexit dreams, Boris used Dominic to get into no10. They are now both in the wilderness. I would pay to watch their fight, no rules, weapons allowed, lat man standing

That, with his history of lies and bullshit that he ever got near the heart of our democracy in the first place.

Politicians had a bad name to begin with, he has tainted politics for decades to come.

As Labour are currently unelectable I would presume that the Tory's would still win unless the voters went Liberal or Green.

"I regret that he has gone before we get our vote for independence. "

Was he going to approve that? I thought he had refused.

I don't think it matters though. Nichola has focussed her attacks on "the English parliament in Westminister" where they treat the Scots so badly. The old enemy plods on.

The potential that Boris squandered. The mandate he had through such a large swathe of MP's, the Red Wall falling. It really looked like it could unite the country. All it would take was someone who focussed more on the country and less on the people immediately around them.

Sadly Boris ended up as nothing more than a big disappointment. All we can hope for is that the next leader is less stubborn or easily manipulated. Also hope they know not to document their law breaking with photos. :D

In fairness to Boris, uniting the country isn't in his or the Tories interest, so I can see why his government actively drove the divide deeper.

While normal British people are fighting amongst ourselves, they're lining their, and their friends pockets.

If this were true then it makes no sense that while HMG sends defence contracts to Scottish shipyards, the SNP ScotGov sends it’s ‘shit show’ ferries contract to Turkey.

He really was only in it for himself I am afraid.

His game plan was always to remove anyone in his own party who could hold him in check and then to surround himself with the desperate, needy and stupid so that he could run a presidential cabinet as all narcissistic dictators do. I believe that he would have tried to alter politics in this country to a presidential system and we are really lucky he is (nearly)gone.

If anything this chapter in British political life shows that we either need a proper written constitution or proportional representation or preferably both. In years to come this will be looked back on as a time when the Tory party came very close to destroying the fabric of our democracy and make no mistake that this is all coming at a time when the monarchy is under intense strain with potentially a new monarch who does not understand where the boundaries between state and monarchy lie.

I don’t think Boris was a Brexiteer at all. I think he used it as a lever to power and any Trojan horse was provided by his backers. Despite his appalling behaviour through his entire career the money men realised his charismatic character was perfect for sound bite media productions. He at no point in all this had a plan as that wasn’t the point. The only plan was his own power and his paymasters desire for Brexit. They succeeded in both.

Notice how Rishi and Penny release Trump style videos to win over voters . Is the American way what we really want? Celebrity over substance.

Problem with Rishi is the packaging looks great - open it up and there’s not a lot inside other than a puppet waiting for the strings to be operated.

Characterless.

I regret that many of the alternative Tory leaders are worse and may also see conservatives be in power for another 5-6 years!

Do we want another Major, May, Brown ?

If you want the public to engage they have to have something to hold on to. For some the amount “to hold on to” with Johnson was too much - but by george he could carry a much broader spectrum of people than anyone has given him credit for.

I met him a few times and regardless of location and political persuasion people wanted to meet him! That’s the Johnsonism factor that opponents would love to have. It matters a great deal.

Johnson’s failing was not having the right people around him to make the vision a reality - and yes, that’s his own fault.

So we want a visionary with a good dollop of character and a touch more ability

Rishi doesn’t have the right mix - sadly too much ability at the expense of character and vision.

I get your point. Charisma is an important characteristic in a leader.

With Johnson, it didn't make up for his lack of morals, or lack of interest in governing the country for British people. I don't think it was the people around him, although they didn't help.

I would be more interested in some who wants to serve the country, and charisma being a second tier quality.

Do you think Blair had charisma? The most important traits in any leader is

Selflessness.

Integrity.

Objectivity.

Accountability.

Openness.

Honesty.

Leadership.

Boris had none of these , therefore his personality is irrelevant

Contrast - Blair engaged with people far more than Major. I voted for Blair!

Sure - the traits of leadership - I agree 100% . But then the angle here is not what Johnson lacked. It is what he has in abundance. It’s that thing that mobilises and engages a greater number of people to put a cross in the blue box.

Like it or not people will go with something shiny and engaging more than they will get into the nuts and bolts of leadership traits …

It has surprised me hugely that even now, with all the shenanigans of the past few months a large % of Labour colleagues and friends would rather have Johnson (voted for him in 2019 and would do so again) than any of the replacements being banded around in the past few days .

Also quite surprising is the fact they still would not return to vote Labour under Starmer

There is some fascinating dynamics in play at the moment and it doesn’t rest solely with the Tory party

I don’t see that at all, Starmer and labour were thrashed at the last election, miles behind and because of Boris they are ahead in the polls in less that 3 years. Boris won a huge majority mainly because of Brexit, his personality is over hyped and is now trashed . Populism was an experiment that has failed , the next leader of the Tory party what be chosen because of his/her charisma
