Possibly not suited to this forum but can anyone explain to me why smoking is linked to poverty and deprived areas? At around a tenner a pack I would've thought it was a middle or upper class thing these days? |

Cigarettes and alcohol have historically been stress relief outlets that disadvantaged people with limited availability to leisure, holiday and other recreational breaks have turned to.
The poorer people are, the more likely they are to smoke. People in multiple disadvantaged groups are more likely to smoke. Children with parents who smoke and who are in family structures with low social mobility are more likely to start smoking.
And obviously it's a vicious circle as the more expensive cigarettes get, the more these groups suffer financial pressure and depend on cigarettes for the perceived stress relief.

black market loose leaf tobbaco appears the prefered option localy freely available very cheap + can mix in a bit of for extra stress release .could obtain both very easily and cheaply within 5 mins and we partake in niether .as our local shopkeeper bemoans on a regular basis tobbaco sales are massivley down but sales of paraphenalia skins lighters matches etc is up and increasing . |

In Britain you have the problem of there only being one rate of excise duty that covers all tobacco products. So cigarettes and loose tobacco are taxed at the same rate.
Many European countries have different rates for different products.
In Germany for example there are three plus a loophole. There is one rate for cigarettes, another for cigars (including brown paper cigarettes) and another for loose tobacco.
The loophole is quite quirky but very handy.
Tobacco leaves (whole leaves not shredded) attract no excise duty at all and can be bought for as little as 15€ a kilo. Not black market but fully legal although it is supposed to be "for decoration purposes"
With a bit of kit (we use a pasta maker with the spaghetti cutter) and a bit of trial and error (we now blend 50% yellow virginia and 50% burley) we are now able to make cigarettes that are very close to shop bought.
The actual cigarette machines are widely available on line (around 40€) and tubes are for pennies.
I suppose one day they will close it but for now HAPPY DAYS!

I quit (again) around a year ago.. But yep there's always the 'baccy house', last time I bought a pack it was around £5.50 vs full price... Of course the snides are absolutely shocking for your lungs. Probs way worse than the 'authentic cigs'... Go figure

Based on one pack each per day I would guess around 300-350€ per month.
That is based on German prices (around 6€ a pack) so in other countries the saving could be much more. |
