He talks about the fact that he feels lonely in F1 "being the only person of colour in the room "
If there are people in a room should skin colour matter ? Aren't we taught to look beyond colour and race ?

You can say "look beyond skin colour" all you like, but it's a fact that many people in the world do not look beyond skin colour, and this creates different life experiences for black and white people.
It's not racist for Hamilton to wish he had more people around him who might understand him and his life better.

Oh honestly….enough of the white working class victim BS. You know full well that anyone travelling around the world for F1 is going to have to fly, etc it’s a contractural condition to be there on time and ready to race. Is it because he is black that you say these things? As far as I know his dad scrimped and saved to get him going at a young age in the karting world and his talent and hid dad’s tenacious nature got him to where he is today and if he feels his diffference to everyone else around him in F1 then he’s entitled to express that. Oh and he was world champion 7 times so he must be pretty bright and good at his job!  |

I know a few Dads who’s sons raced karts at Rye house at the time Lewis started. Generally regarded as good guys, he was not especially talented but was driven. (no pun) The real change came when Ron Dennis & Slippery Bernie saw the commercial appeal of a black driver and funded his development. I’m not suggesting it was just that that made him a champion but motorsport is all about funding. One guy thought his boy a terrific driver but couldn’t work out why when they had the same regulated Honda engines there were lesser drivers beating him. Turns out some engines are just better than others, so the wealthy Dads would buy them in say lots of 20, dyno test them to get the best two then sell off the rest.
Good luck to Lewis I say. I’m not a fan of him or F1 by the way. Fame & wealth does strange things to people . Of course he’s not racist . Very few people actually are believe it or not.

I absolutely get where Lewis is coming from… I lived in Atlanta in a predominantly white neighbourhood, then moved to New York lived in a predominantly white neighbourhood and went to an almost all white school, then went to London, lived in a mainly white area, went to a mainly white school… then went to university where most people were white…
So yeah, I get that Lewis may feel different because he may have been treated differently, consciously or unconsciously…..
Where you would like to think we are all treated the same, the truth is that we are not… how many times have people crossed the road when they see you walking? How many times have you been stopped and searched?
There is a difference between platitudes and the real world… I wish people would actually listen rather than paying lip service!
I lay this challenge out to ANYONE in this thread… if you really want the conversation I am happy to have it… but you are going to hear some really uncomfortable home truths…

I'm not going to challenge. However I found lonely an unusual adjective here. Can you empathise with that ?
My initial reaction was he does feel lonely (it's lonely the top of a heitachy) and I can imagine feeling something when he notes noone looks like him.
That said, I can half get it. I've worked in Asia and it can feel lonely when everyone is speaking a different language. That wasn't skin tone but something akin to it I guess.

It’s great this doesn’t bother you. That’s your prerogative. I find it a bit distasteful when probably 99% of the people he works with at Mercedes Racing live, work and pay all their taxes in the UK. He could have chosen anywhere on the French riviera and paid French tax but clearly chose Monaco to reduce his tax payments.
However, not really in the same league as Mrs Sunak and her so called (bought) non-dom status as Hamilton most likely does spend most of his time outside the UK (it used to be 90% as a requirement I believe but perhaps not now) so at least there is legitimacy. |

He's a great driver
I like that he uses his fame as a platform. Even if I don't always agree with what he says. Many just take the money and never stand up to be shot down.
It's a shame he doesn't pay tax here. I'd rather he paid UK tax than Akshata Murphy (who should pay fuck loads to India)
I have no party affiliations. I'm not even sure if I've voted for the same party twice in a row (other than the noneoftheabove party)

On your “hate” point...that is an extreme emotional reaction. Don’t know about you but I reserve “hate” for rapists, child abusers, murderers, war criminals and some politicians. Basically people who are in a position, or have committed acts, to seriously negatively impact on the lives of others. Not sure a sports person falls into that category! They entertain millions and help to create employment but beyond that...?
Hamilton is very talented and it is brilliant that a British sportsman is the best in the world at something (doesn’t happen often). As someone said above, it is good to see him use his platform to promote issues that matter to him. But to me, and in my opinion, he comes across as a bit of a dick.

Had always respected Hamilton and his accomplishments.
THEN
Happened to watch the USGP where he walked away from everyone as usual. Driving the top car, having all these people from his team of mainly European descent.
There is Lewis at his interview surrounded by his race banter such as al sharpton and others and trying to complain about racists against him.
Glad to see the announcer was on his game and shut him down.
He is a 7 time champion, that has been given the best support and equipment.
There are going to be racist people, as a white person I have experienced it in my travels.
Be a bigger person and move on, if you dwell on it then you are part of the problem.
F1 should be a unifier of races, Hamilton should be a spokesman for what you can become. His Dad is a prime example of how he worked through adversity and helped to make Lewis what he is today.

The design industry is predominantly white. It's full of rich white executives, models, and designers.
Wearing clothing designed by black designers to promote black designers, to give them some reputation in the predominantly white design industry, is not racist.
White designers have not been undermined, and they never will be.
Just look at this thread, people are clutching on straws calling LH racist ans holding him to a higher standard just because he not white (yes he is mixed race but he will always be treated as black). This happens in the fashion industry too.

Remember that EVERYONE is entitled to their opinion regardless of whether others agree or not and they are allowed by the laws of free speech in this country to voice that opinion. There are also laws governing hate speech which are designed to protect anyone regardless of colour or creed.
It doesn't matter if someone is racist or not, a persons own integrity should put them above that level

You cannot do that without mentioning ethnicity. His birth mother is white even if he identifies as black.

That said, I can half get it. I've worked in Asia and it can feel lonely when everyone is speaking a different language. That wasn't skin tone but something akin to it I guess.
Can I empathise… yep… your experience in life is going to be different because outside of your small group people aren’t going to always understand what you may go through…

Where you would like to think we are all treated the same, the truth is that we are not… how many times have people crossed the road when they see you walking? How many times have you been stopped and searched?
There is a difference between platitudes and the real world… I wish people would actually listen rather than paying lip service!

While I wholeheartedly agree it is more preferable and interesting for communities to mix. For a variety of reasons that isn't always possible.
Be it language barrier or a hostile community etc.
I grew up in a area of Glasgow predominantly white. Where racial abuse and violence was rife. My parents as soon possible moved to a "more of their own" area.
While in the last 30 years Glasgow has become more diverse and cosmopolitan, there will be towns and cities across the UK where it still happen. |

On the lonely thing (not going to even touch the racist thing) F1 is not exactly renowned for the strong friendships between drivers, even “teammates” often hate each other! In fact there has been outright hostility. Senna v Prost anyone?
The drivers real “team” are their personal mechanics. But they are junior to the driver so the relationship is unbalanced, not least of which being the huge difference in pay.
I suspect by its’ very nature, F1 is indeed a lonely sport. |

I can't fully empathise with colour being a cause for feeling lonely, but maybe that's because I've spent 99pc of my life being in groups dominated by people of my colour. But I can fully understand culture and class.
Drop a white working class kid in a room full of Etonians and they may feel lonely. If you have ever been at a meal where everyone else is speaking a foreign language and you may feel lonely.
(This may be my own spin as due to my experiences, where I have been aware of class etc. I can see someone aware of race feeling similar).
(I also wonder if lonely is the word he is looking for, given connotations of friends. Maybe isolated, or an outsider or an imposter) |

Sir Lewis Hamilton has his opinion which is perfectly fine, but we think he's wrong. He's basically suggesting that a person's race plays a factor in how successful someone is. We would disagree as he is looking at it from the wrong angle.
What people should look at is how many kids are brought up in single parent households. That is a very indicative factor when it comes to success of certain diasporas.
Locality also may very well play a factor too. It's hard to get a good start growing up on a rundown tower block estate in a city as opposed to a small village in the Lakes, or even working class area in a northern town. |

I do admit not a LH fan. Perhaps because most years supported other drivers and teams. Never supported Mercedes .
My thought is and yes looking how drivers get a F1 super licence. It is not easy . From internet the F1 drivers this year started in karting at around 3 and up to 6 years old. To get a F1 licence . You can be a billionaire . Yet still cannot buy . This due to the criteria.
LH wants more ‘black’ people to drive in F1 ?
This means and as other posters have said. Due to social , economic factors and where they live . Are at a disadvantage ?
There is also something I have noticed that never is mentioned .
In any sport . You need dedication . So I am not saying I am correct . But do some very good drivers who are ‘black’ give up, same as ‘white drivers. Would rather be doing other things. ?
To put into context. I played in an individual sport from age 11, up until age 21. I was not say international player . I was high ranked county player . But the amount of time per week spent practicing , playing in leagues , tournaments .
Some of the players who I played against and yes were a lot better than me. Around age 15. Stopped playing . This as I have said due to commitment, giving up social life . Hope I have explained my thoughts / as to why it is very complex to succeed at the top in any sport ?

My cousin works for mclaren and has met him on multiple occasions, hasn't said anything remotely negative about him.

It's true to say that we only get a very tiny snapshot into the guy's personality and mindset - and the snapshot is also framed by reporting.
So, for example, I remember some outrage or another in the Mirror about an opinion Prince Harry had voiced. The outrage was based on the fact that he had dared to have an opinion on the subject. However, no one would have known the opinion if he hadn't been asked the question by the Mirror reporter. The point being a lot of these celebs would probably be quite happy to keep their lives much more private than they are able to. It's that the media go fishing.

Is it wrong to recognise difference or is it wrong to denigrate someone for their difference?
If you feel excluded for your difference then you will feel lonely. That is based on your experience.
No different to being the only woman or the only person with a disability or the only person from a particular social background in the room. |
