Do you use Twitter?
I'm not on there, so don't know what the implications of this could be. |

Yup he probably will bring back Trump but I hope he sorts out the algorithm and shadow banning. Verification for real people and sorts out the bot farms.
It's a great day for free speech as a whole but twitter needs sorting out alot more than bringing back suspended accounts like Trump and babylon bee |

Capitalism at work, what’s not to like?
People who don’t like it can simply stop using Twitter, join an alternative or start their own.
(Never used twitter myself). |

“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated”
“I want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans. Twitter has tremendous potential - I look forward to working with the company and community of users to unlock it” |

Is the issue about platforming hate?
Isn't Twitter already privately owned?
I've no idea what the implications of this are. |

Twitter was on the stock exchange as a public entity, its now being taken off and being set to an private company with limited shareholders, platforming anything you define as hate that is legally allowed then it's not an issue in my eyes. Combat "fake news" with "truth" instead of silencing voices. Let the user decide if what they read is true or not. |

Seems plenty of people have their knickers in a twist over this.
If you don’t like the platform then use another a phrase I have heard all along since the world went to shit.
I shall sit back and watch with interest. |

Got it. Thanks.
People are notoriously shit at deciding what's true or not. See Covid conspiracies, brexit, trump etc. Not that I'm saying it's their responsibility to control these things. |

I mean people were being banned and removed from social media for saying in the beginning that it was leaked from a lab, now its an legitimate theory. Same with at one time it was stated by health officials that once having the vaccine you was immune. People got banned for saying a different narrative, same with hunter bidens laptop etc.... what might be called a conspiracy, might be true but people were being silenced because it didn't fit the narrative.
This way the open source algorithm will bolster trust in the effective public square.
It's ironic that pzaki just stated they wanted to bring in title 230 reforms. It's laughable now they don't control the narrative.
In my eyes, if its legal then its fair play to be on twitter, don't quash debate/discourse. It's up to the end user to believe what they want to believe. |

I'm all for freedom of speech.
Hate speech is difficult, I'm not sure de-platforming is the answer. But then again, if I owned a social media company, I wouldn't be up for allowing hate speech. So I don't know what the answer is.
The covid conspiracy stuff is different to the "aliens built the pyramids" stuff, it had real life consequences as anti-vaxxers and "plandemic" types died of covid that could have been avoided. |

It’s a 43 billion dollar vanity thing because he was pissed off at the current board….
The fear is that between Tesla. Space X and now Twitter he is spreading himself too thin |

The more interesting question will be if it becomes a subscription based thing… how many people would leave?
I love Twitter as it’s quicker than some of the news outlets |

He's a nasty bastard, so I'm not worried about him spreading himself too thin.
I don't use Twitter, but I can't see it retaining its popularity of they introduce a subscription. There are too many free alternatives. |

'Twitter the Town Square of truth', lmfao.
Musk is paying how many billions just so that Trump can have a mouth again? OMG! We are so blessed with his altruism, lol.

Just imagine the “good” Elon Musk could have done around the world with that $44bn. Eradicate some diseases. Famine. Poverty.
Nah let’s buy a vanity social media platform.
You’d think with so much money he might be interested in his legacy! |

Will probably sell it in once he is bored wit that too "
Yup. Just doing what Trump couldn't. Musk got censored a few times on twitter so hey I'll buy it instead.

The media seem to be playing up that this is a controversial move by Elon for some reason.
Have to admit, not heard positive things regarding how Twitter handles people who argue against common narratives. |

It's unclear exactly what it means to be more pro-free speech within the law. The big tech legislation may prove to be something of an obstacle given how it differs in different continents and the censorship in places like India.
As for authenticating all humans, this is potentially very daft. In addition to the seemingly endless bots, Twitter is used all over the world by political dissidents to express their discontent with their governments. Authenticating them could potentially put them in danger, governments could potentially access their data and all sorts of things become possible.
Another factor would be how could Twitter change at the point of use? Well, NFTs and the metaverse could be the future, or part of it, looking longer term. Moving away from the ads model could be something else to consider, Twitter being a subscribtion service has been mentioned, this could be something every new Tesla could come with as standard.
There's all sorts of things to consider and wonder about. This could be the end of Twitter as we once knew it, I think only Musk and his inner circle will really know what he exactly intends on doing. It would appear the CEO is remaining in place, that suggests that Twitter might not be changing wholesale.
As for whether people should now boycott it, I would say no. The money people behind Twitter before weren't people that were much better than Musk. Whether people should boycott it or not surely depends upon what Musk is going to do with it.
But consider this. Some are old enough to remember being active on Myspace, Friends Reunited and Bebo. While those old enough to remember being on those platforms, none of them were quite as interlinked with how the news gets out. Twitter is rather unique in that regard, it's a much more important platform. While I was a teenager when I used Bebo, I can't imagine it was used by people older than me to access news in the same way people use Twitter, or that its decline led to people changing how they accessed news.
If Twitter as we know it ends, the ramifications will be absolutely huge and I don't doubt we'll see the rise of another platform that people use in a similar way to Twitter, I would certainly hope so anyway. |

True but we know the answer. That 44bn will be subject to tax so US Govt will get a whack. |

I don't use Twitter either and, it's arguable, the $43bn could have been better spent - since it's not all his own.
As for "Capitalism at work, what's not to like?"
What P&O did was capitalism at work. So was the financial crash.
Capitalism works; but when it's abused by greedy cunts who don't give a shit about the law, or people's lives - as it frequently is - there's plenty not to like. |
