It seems rishi has done a good job on keeping the rate of unemployment down through the pandemic with his measures USA 3.6% ,UK rate 3.9%, EU 6.2% and i cant understand why its so high as there are jobs everywhere at the moment. |

Surely after getting rid of so many foreigners, so many deaths from Covid and refusing to accept refugees, the UK should have next to zero unemployment!

There's always frictional unemployment.
It's a good number,at the lower end of the what of the EU
I have in my head it's helped by more people choosing to become economically inactive over the covid period as employemnt numbers (in m) is about .5m down.
But it's about equal the number of people looking and the number of vacancies. That's a good place to be.

it's the lowest since 2008. Seems like France have some deeper structural issues. So Macron is doing a good job relative to previous incumbanys. |

Nice to have some good news. I have to say I was fearful of how many would be unemployed when furlough ended. As you mention there are plenty of jobs about so hope the figure continues to improve. |

Unemployment figures and vacancies aren't as neatly linked as you'd think. Significant numbers of advertised vacancies don't exist, and an even more significant number of vacancies are for jobs which require specialist qualifications or experience not really found amongst the pool of unemployed.
Neither the unemployment or Job vacancy figures are particularly accurate barometers of the state of the economy as they aren't necessarily in sync with economic trends. |

The problem is jobs in the right place and the right skill set. Many sectors have many open vacancies, but the unemployed and the jobs are not always aligned geographically. There will be huge regional variations. |

Remember our chat about ratios and how we count anyone on any type of course however irrelevant to their employment or on a zero hours contract as employed? Half of Europe don’t allow zero hours so they don’t have such horrific terms or have the number count as employed. In Poland you have a min 3 to 4 hours pay of you are called in even for two mins.
So U.K. figures are manipulated more than most. Some estimates by organisations such as the world bank suggest our true U.K. unemployment is in reality two to three times more than we declare. The government lying on numbers started with Gordon Brown so this is non partisan from me. We need to see more detail which always seems to be hidden. |

This is very true. If you have in demand skills then unemployment won’t usually be an issue. But of you fester and let your skills base stagnate, or never bother to build any real skills then it is going to be increasingly difficult. Similarly ability to move to where the work is or where the demand is highest will limit opportunity.
Vary rarely in history has the work for to the worker - until very recently in the case of IT remote working. |

Anyway however the government decide to frig the stats, the reality is that there has not been a period of such high demand and scarcity for quite a while. So anyone who can and wants to work can in most cases get off their arse and get work. 1000s of jibs in hospitality, technology, care, construction etc etc.
That has to be something to celebrate right?

It should be I totally agree. But if we have hundreds of thousands of unemployed and lots of both skilled and unskilled vacancies what’s not working! It’s not just geography it’s education and skills in my opinion. This is even more worrying if the figures are twice as high. Maybe it’s because we are a low skilled economy and the rates make it just not worthwhile for a family man to take a job as he’s better off on benefits.
The young European workers who left were happy to work and earn. Is it because the typical U.K. unemployed are not working out of choice? Every country has a core of the happy not to work. Maybe ours is just bigger.
Too many vacancies is very bad for the country in the long term as it will stifle development and investment but increases costs.
Due to care homes being unable to take residents from a lack of staff a local hospital was overcrowded last week. A friends wife had a suspected stroke. An ambulance arrived at around 8pm . After waiting for four hours she was admitted for an X-ray but shockingly then put back in the ambulance to wait. There were 12 ambulances containing patients in the A&E bays. She was finally admitted at 9.30 the following morning.
This is what getting rid of all those workers brings. Disaster capitalism indeed. |

actually, no they never have been. it's always been to a british standard since 1981. it is also reflective of the state of unemployment six months hence so is always perpetually out of date by a huge margin. hope this helps. |

I guess to compare the rate to other countries would require the UK and the other countries to calculate in the same way or at least very similar. Otherwise it is difficult to compare. However Unless the UK way of calculating has changed recently then it is a way to judge if the situation is improving or not. Regardless of if people agree or disagree with the method, as long as that method remains broadly the same it provides information if things are getting better or worse |

Maybe if businesses paid more to workers and decided that profits just need meet a minimum threshold and then they share the residual profit with their workforce, maybe just maybe they can have enough money to pay their bills. |

I’m talking about big corps, where billions are made, not some mom and pop outfit, where there are barely any profits, most small businesses are barely working properly, maybe because they shouldn’t really exist in over saturated markets.
Sometimes I despair at the bandwagon stuff, ah someone is doing it, so should we, don’t they realise the reason why the previous company made lots of money was because copycats were not in the same market, then it halves, the profit between two companies, then three, then four. Utterly stupid and pointless. |

Or could it be re classification. As with a days training means you’re off the register even though you don’t have a job and are claiming benefits., but you’re not unemployed. It’s actually fraud how they manipulate the numbers.

Or probably fairer today, 150 more people were disabled and employed.
Now, I don't disbelieve that some of these are barely employed. The same as all the UK stats. But I read "all those jobs" as meaning thousands.

In 2018 according to the ONS through a commons briefing., “376,000” people with disabilities of working age were unemployed. “People with disabilities had an unemployment rate of 9.1%. The unemployment rate for people without disabilities was 3.6%. “
In 2019 according to the parliament library again ONS, . “The unemployment rate (calculated as a proportion of the economically active population) was 6.7% for disabled people and 3.7% for non-disabled people in 2019. This equated to just over “300,000” unemployed disabled people in 2019.”
So your saying a 17% reduction in the first figure above as the DNS claimed was 150 people taking up jobs? If you assumed both numbers had a wide margin of error it’s still 50000 plus.
The figures are not accurate it seems from the ONS and the parliamentary library but it’s a quite few thousand jobs don’t you agree? What was so good in 2019 to get all those people working?

It does to me too i think the unemployment dept should get their finger out there are jobs everywhere lately why is france so high at 7.4% i thought macron was doing a good job?

Remember our chat about ratios and how we count anyone on any type of course however irrelevant to their employment or on a zero hours contract as employed? Half of Europe don’t allow zero hours so they don’t have such horrific terms or have the number count as employed. In Poland you have a min 3 to 4 hours pay of you are called in even for two mins.
So U.K. figures are manipulated more than most. Some estimates by organisations such as the world bank suggest our true U.K. unemployment is in reality two to three times more than we declare. The government lying on numbers started with Gordon Brown so this is non partisan from me. We need to see more detail which always seems to be hidden. "

Nothing was so good in 2019 to create a one off reduction. It's a case that rates have been falling from 2014 onwards.
This could be due to more people taking a job for one hour.
It could be that more people are in employment are now defined as disabled. (Disabled numbers have increased by 30pc since 2013 but those who do not meet the classification have fallen!)
Or thise who are inactive become active but only when they have a job.
(There's been a decent swing from inactive to active)
It's all very interesting. Don't know what the answer is!!
But suffice to say, had unemployment increased there would be a negative headline here too!!!

I agree with all of that but it re-enforces we don’t know the real number.
If someone works three hours a week so gets working tax credit instead of unemployment benefit is that really a job or are they unemployed really?
Both Labour and Tory use the fudges so we are mislead as are the credit ratings agencies.
In forty years we don’t appear to be any better off as a nation despite consistent promises . It’s time for a belt and braces change.
Maybe consensus government through PR is the answer. I don’t know. I do definitely know what we have isn’t working. |

Actually found that there are harmonized charts for unemployment and your figures are quite close. Uk slightly above Germany but far below France which is close to double the rate. More importantly to my mind, the trend is consistently down and showing good improvements in various age groups and people out of work for various time scales. Hope it continues |

And that is how it should be - the data for unemployed is taken from those who are claiming an unemployment benefit of some kind and are seeking work.
If carers want to be in those figures, they would need to claim those benefits.
